  • Royals' Kyle Isbel: Homers in Saturday's win

Isbel went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Saturday's 5-3 win over the Athletics.

The homer was Isbel's first since April 29. The outfielder has seen a dip in playing time in May, in part because he's hitting .222 (8-for-36) over 11 contests this month. Overall, he has a .218/.262/.361 slash line with four homers, three stolen bases, 12 RBI, 15 runs scored, three doubles and a triple over 127 plate appearances. Isbel will likely continue to be out of the lineup versus most southpaws, with Garrett Hampson or Dairon Blanco options to pick up the short-side at-bats in center field.

  • Royals' Angel Zerpa: Gaining traction in leverage spots

Zerpa extended his scoreless streak to 7.2 innings with a perfect inning in Saturday's 5-3 win over the Athletics.

Zerpa's scoreless streak spans nine appearances, and he's earned five holds while adding an 8:0 K:BB in that span. The southpaw came up through the minors as a starter, but he's found some success in the Royals' bullpen this year. He's up to seven holds through 20 appearances while pitching to a 1.47 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 20:3 K:BB over 18.1 innings this season. Zerpa has yet to get a look for saves, but he's been one of the Royals' most effective relievers over the first quarter-plus of the campaign.

  • Royals' James McArthur: Pitches around trouble for save

McArthur allowed two hits and struck out two without walking a batter in a scoreless inning to earn the save in Saturday's 5-3 win over the Athletics.

McArthur allowed back-to-back singles to begin the ninth inning, but he retired the next three batters to secure his 11th save of the year. He's allowed multiple baserunners in four of his last six outings, but he's converted his last four save chances. McArthur is at a 4.35 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 23:3 K:BB through 20.2 innings this season.

  • Royals' Seth Lugo: Strikes out 10 in win

Lugo (7-1) earned the win Saturday over the Athletics, allowing two runs on six hits and a walk while striking out 10 over 5.2 innings.

Lugo was able to limit the damage to a two-run home run by Seth Brown in the second inning. This was Lugo's second straight start with double-digit strikeouts, though he came up one out short of a fifth straight quality start. The right-hander is now at a 1.79 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 58:13 K:BB through 65.1 innings over 10 starts this season. He's projected to make his next start on the road against the Rays.

  • Royals' Kris Bubic: Set to be transferred to Double-A

Bubic (elbow) will have his rehab assignment transferred to Double-A Northwest Arkansas.

Bubic began his rehab assignment at the Royals' rookie level Arizona Complex affiliate May 7, and he'll now advance to Double-A. He made three appearances at the rookie level, allowing one run on four hits and two walks while striking out eight batters over 3.1 innings. The left-hander has been on the 60-day injured list since February as he has continued to recover from the Tommy John surgery he underwent last April.

  • Royals' Hunter Renfroe: Sitting Saturday

Renfroe is not in the starting lineup Saturday versus the Athletics.

Renfroe will get a day off after he went 2-for-10 with a run scored while starting the team's last three contests. Adam Frazier enters the lineup at second base after some shuffling, batting eighth against Oakland.

  • Royals' Salvador Perez: Three hits in win

Perez went 3-for-3 with a double, a walk, an RBI and a run scored in Friday's 6-2 win over the Athletics.

Perez opened the scoring with an RBI single in the first inning and got on base three more times in Friday's victory. The veteran catcher is batting .294 (15-for-51) with seven extra-base hits and eight RBI in May. That's actually down from his overall numbers -- Perez is slashing a stellar .335/.403/.557 with eight home runs, 34 RBI, 18 runs scored and 11 doubles over 176 plate appearances. He last hit above .300 for a full season in the abbreviated 2020 campaign, so there is a high risk that he cools off eventually in 2024, but he's been excellent over the first quarter of the season.

  • Royals' Maikel Garcia: Lifts three-run homer

Garcia went 1-for-5 with a three-run home run in Friday's 6-2 win over the Athletics.

Garcia went deep as part of a five-run sixth inning that put the Royals in full control. The third baseman has hit safely in five straight games, adding two steals and four RBI in that span despite going a meager 5-for-22 (.227). Garcia's been held hitless in just three of 14 games in May, so he's still putting together decent at-bats despite not producing big numbers. The 24-year-old is slashing .238/.286/.381 with five homers, 28 RBI, 21 runs scored and 10 steals through 44 contests overall.

  • Royals' Michael Massey: Homers among three hits

Massey went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer in Friday's win over Oakland.

Massey cracked his fourth home run of the season in the sixth inning, hitting it 368 feet to right field. The 26-year-old has enjoyed a hot start to May, batting .288 (15-for-52) with three homers, five runs scored and 11 RBI this month. Overall, Massey is slashing .259/.261/.447 over 90 plate appearances while being locked into the starting second base job for Kansas City.

  • Royals' Cole Ragans: Dazzles in victory

Ragans (3-3) earned the win Friday against the Athletics, allowing two hits and two walks over seven shutout innings. He struck out seven.

Ragans dominated a weak Oakland offense and yielded just one extra-base hit, a JJ Bleday double. The Kansas City southpaw generated a solid 15 whiffs on 94 pitches. Despite two seven-run outings in 2024, Ragans' ERA now stands at 3.70 over 56 innings. The 26-year-old is scheduled to make his next start against the Tigers at home.

  • Royals' Alec Marsh: Stuck with loss against M's

Marsh (3-1) took the loss Wednesday, giving up two runs (one earned) on five hits and a walk over five innings as the Royals fell 4-2 to the Mariners. He struck out seven.

The right-hander generated 30 called or swinging strikes among his 102 pitches -- his biggest workload of the season -- but didn't get enough support from his offense or defense to avoid his first loss. A stint on the injured list after taking a comebacker off his pitching elbow hasn't derailed Marsh's momentum, as he's given up just two earned runs total over his last four starts while posting a 21:7 K:BB in his last 20.1 innings. He'll look to get back in the win column in his next outing, which lines up to come at home early next week against the Tigers.
