Cubs' Ben Brown: Receiving another start
Brown is scheduled to start Tuesday's game against the Brewers at American Family Field.
Brown made his fifth start of the season and his first since May 2 in his last appearance Thursday versus Atlanta, striking out six over four scoreless innings while working around one hit and two walks. Because he had been working out of the bullpen over the preceding three weeks and took the mound versus Atlanta on three days' rest, Brown had his workload monitored carefully, as he was pulled after 66 pitches despite mowing down the opposing lineup. Brown should be able to provide the Cubs with more length when he takes the hill Tuesday, but his run in the Chicago rotation may not last much longer, with Jordan Wicks (forearm) nearing a return from the 15-day injured list.

Cubs' Ben Brown: Fares well in start
Brown allowed one hit and two walks while striking out six over four scoreless innings in a no-decision versus Atlanta on Thursday.
Brown did a fine job, throwing 42 of 66 pitches for strikes while working on three days' rest. He's started five of his 12 appearances this season and now has a 3.20 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 45:15 K:BB over 39.1 innings. Kyle Hendricks' struggles opened up this chance for Brown to start, but he could find himself back in the bullpen once Jordan Wicks (forearm) is cleared to return. In any case, Brown appears to be near the top of the list for the Cubs whenever they have an opening in the rotation to fill.

Cubs' Ben Brown: Drawing start Thursday
Cubs manager Craig Counsell said that Brown will start Thursday's game against Atlanta at Wrigley Field, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports.
Brown will pick up his fifth start of the season, filling the spot in the rotation that belonged to Kyle Hendricks before the veteran right-hander was moved to the bullpen earlier this week. Because he hasn't started since May 2 and will be pitching on three days' rest after covering two frames in relief Sunday, Brown may not be asked to give the Cubs more than three or four innings as he re-enters the rotation. Hendricks hasn't been used since his last start Friday and could be called upon to piggyback Brown, but Counsell hasn't outlined his plans for when Brown exits the contest. Brown may not be in line for a lengthy stay in the rotation, as the Cubs could get Jordan Wicks (forearm) back from the injured list next week to take over as their No. 5 starter.

Cubs' Ben Brown: Earns first MLB win in relief
Brown (1-1) tossed 3.2 scoreless innings of relief to earn the win in Friday's 7-2 victory over the Pirates. He allowed two hits and a walk while striking out six.
Starter Javier Assad got the hook after 4.1 innings and 89 pitches, which opened the door for Brown to provide some valuable long relief. The 24-year-old was sharp as he recorded a season- and career-best six strikeouts, and the rookie picked up his first MLB win in the process. Brown's fantasy value is limited in his long-relief role, but he's pitched well so far as a rookie, compiling 33 strikeouts across 31.1 innings and posting a 3.73 ERA. The upside is there in the long term.

Cubs' Ben Brown: Move to bullpen confirmed
Cubs manager Craig Counsell said Monday that Brown will be available out of the bullpen for the team's three-game series against the Padres, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.
Brown could rejoin the Chicago rotation at some point down the road, but for now, he'll shift to the bullpen with Justin Steele (hamstring) returning from the injured list to start Monday's series opener. The Cubs will keep Hayden Wesneski in the rotation over Brown as their No. 5 starter until Kyle Hendricks (back) returns from the IL.

Cubs' Ben Brown: Headed to bullpen or Triple-A
Brown isn't slated to start for the Cubs in their three-game series against the Padres that begins Monday, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Hayden Wesneski looks to have beaten out Brown for the fifth-starter spot, at least until Kyle Hendricks (back) gets activated from the 15-day injured list. Brown had a 5.40 ERA and 1.80 WHIP in 8.1 innings over his last two starts. He doesn't have great numbers this season as a reliever (7.27 ERA, 1.50 WHIP), so perhaps Brown will join the Triple-A Iowa rotation once Justin Steele (hamstring) is activated Monday.

Cubs' Ben Brown: Better in no-decision
Brown did not factor into the decision Thursday against the Mets, allowing two runs on three hits and five walks over 4.2 innings. He struck out five.
Brown got off to a solid start, holding the Mets without a hit through four innings. However, he'd allow the first two batters to reach safely in the fifth before New York scored a pair of two-out runs, forcing the Cubs to turn to the bullpen. While it didn't finish the way he'd have hoped, it was a step in the right direction for Brown after he allowed three runs in just 3.2 innings against the Red Sox his last time out. However, with both Kyle Hendricks (back) and Justin Steele (hamstring) heading out on rehab assignments, the 24-year-old Brown could soon be headed back to the bullpen.
