Taillon (3-2) allowed three runs on six hits and two walks while striking out four over 4.2 innings to take the loss Sunday versus the Pirates. Taillon was a bit inefficient, throwing 55 of 92 pitches for strikes. This was the second start in a row where he failed to complete five innings, and it's the third time in a row he's walked multiple batters. The right-hander is now at a 2.20 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 22:10 K:BB through 32.2 innings over six starts, though his strong April has given way to a shakier May following a bout with back stiffness. Taillon is tentatively projected to make his next start on the road in St. Louis.... See More ... See Less

Cubs' Jameson Taillon: Hammered by Atlanta
Taillon (3-1) took the loss Tuesday, surrendering seven runs (two earned) on seven hits and three walks over four innings as the Cubs fell 7-0 to Atlanta. He struck out two. The right-hander's own fielding error in the fourth inning softened the blow to his ERA, but Taillon's final line was by no means undeserved as he served up homers to Michael Harris and Matt Olson in his last frame. It's the first time in five starts Taillon has been taken deep multiple times, and he'll take a 1.61 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 18:8 K:BB through 28 innings into his next outing, which is scheduled to come at home this weekend against the Pirates.... Cubs' Jameson Taillon: Next start coming Tuesday
Cubs manager Craig Counsell said Taillon (back) will start Tuesday's game in Atlanta, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. A bout with back stiffness resulted in Taillon being scratched from his scheduled start Friday in Pittsburgh, but the right-hander responded well enough from a bullpen session Saturday for the Cubs to clear him to take the hill in Atlanta. With Kyle Hendricks (back) coming off the 15-day injured list to start Sunday in Pittsburgh, Taillon will end up taking over the spot in the rotation that had previously belonged to Hayden Wesneski, who has been moved to the bullpen.... Cubs' Jameson Taillon: Not ready to start Sunday
Taillon (back) won't start Sunday's game in Pittsburgh, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Taillon was scratched from a scheduled start Friday due to back stiffness. He had hoped to take the ball Sunday after throwing off a mound Saturday, but he's not quite ready to go, even though the mound session reportedly went well. It's unclear at this point when Taillon might be ready to make his next start, but the Cubs seems to be optimistic that he'll avoid the 15-day injured list.... See More ... See Less -
Cubs' Jameson Taillon: Dealing with back stiffness
Cubs manager Craig Counsell said that Taillon was scratched from Friday's start against the Pirates due to back stiffness, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports. Taillon felt his back tighten up Tuesday when playing catch, and it didn't improve in time for him to make his scheduled start in the series opener. Counsell noted that the right-hander's back issue is not as bad as the one he dealt with in spring training, which caused Taillon to start the season on the 15-day IL. He will be re-evaluated Saturday, and there's a chance he could take the mound Sunday. Javier Assad will start Friday while Justin Steele will get the nod Saturday.... See More ... See Less -
Cubs' Jameson Taillon: No longer starting Friday
Taillon won't start Friday in Pittsburgh, as the Cubs list Javier Assad as their starter for the series opener versus the Pirates, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. The late change perhaps hints that Taillon may be tending to an injury. The decision to have Assad take the hill for the series opener instead wouldn't seem to be the result of any dissatisfaction with Taillon's performance, as the 32-year-old has opened his second season with the Cubs with a 3-0 record, 1.13 ERA and 0.88 WHIP over 24 innings. Justin Steele will take the hill on four days' rest to start Saturday, while the Cubs are listing their starter for Sunday's series finale as "TBA." More clarity on Chicago's plans for Sunday -- as well as when Taillon might next pitch -- could come prior to Friday's contest.... See More ... See Less -
Cubs' Jameson Taillon: Beats Brewers for third win
Taillon (3-0) earned the win over the Brewers on Saturday, allowing two hits and two walks over six scoreless innings. He struck out seven. The bullpen allowed Milwaukee back into the game with five runs, though Hector Neris ultimately shut the door to preserve the win. Taillon's seven strikeouts Saturday set a season high after he'd previously topped out at four Ks in an outing. Since returning from a back injury, Taillon has allowed just three earned runs with a 16:5 K:BB over 24 innings. Regression will come at some point, but Taillon will have a great chance to keep the good times rolling next weekend in Pittsburgh.... See More ... See Less -
Cubs' Jameson Taillon: Excellent in no-decision
Taillon didn't factor into the decision Monday, allowing one run on four hits and a walk over 7.1 innings. He struck out one. Taillon was able to complete six innings for the first time this season and managed to exceed seven innings in just 78 pitches. Taillon's lone blemish came from the first batter he faced as Brandon Nimmo clubbed a solo home run in the first frame. The veteran righty has yet to yield multiple earned runs through three starts, owning an impressive 1.50 ERA. However, he's only been able to punch out nine batters in his 18.0 innings of work. Taillon is set to close out a two-start week with a matchup against the Brewers on Saturday.... See More ... See Less -
Cubs' Jameson Taillon: Nabs second straight victory
Taillon (2-0) earned the win over Houston on Wednesday, allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits and two walks while striking out four batters over 5.2 innings. Taillon yielded a fair amount of baserunners, but he was unscored upon outside of a two-run third inning. The right-hander notched just five whiffs among his 89 pitches, though that didn't prevent him from picking up his second straight victory to begin the campaign. Taillon got a late start to the season after opening on the injured list due to a back injury, but he already seems to be settled in as a key piece of Chicago's rotation.... See More ... See Less -
Cubs' Jameson Taillon: Sharp in season debut
Taillon (1-0) earned the win Friday against the Marlins, allowing one run on three hits while striking out four over five innings. Taillon didn't show any signs of rust in his first start of the campaign, holding the Marlins to a Bryan De La Cruz solo homer in the fourth inning. It's an encouraging effort from the 32-year-old right-hander, who went 8-10 with a 4.84 ERA in an inconsistent 2023 season. He's currently in line to face the Astros at home in his next start.... Cubs' Jameson Taillon: Activated from IL
The Cubs reinstated Taillon (back) from the 15-day injured list Thursday, Andy Martinez of Marquee Sports Network reports. Taillon would have made his season debut Thursday against Miami, however the game was postponed due to rain. The 32-year-old right-hander will now start Friday after making two rehab appearances, during which he surrendered four runs (three earned) with eight strikeouts across 6.1 innings. Hayden Wesneski was optioned to Triple-A Iowa in a corresponding move.... See More ... See Less -
Cubs' Jameson Taillon: Thursday's start rained out
Taillon (back) and the Cubs won't play the Marlins on Thursday due to inclement weather, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Taillon had been scheduled to make his season debut Thursday, but rain will cause the 32-year-old righty to wait just a bit longer. Thursday's game will be made up with a doubleheader Saturday, and Taillon will presumably get a chance to start Friday.... See More ... See Less -
Cubs' Jameson Taillon: Making season debut Thursday
Taillon (back) will be activated from the 15-day injured list and is listed as the Cubs' probable starting pitcher for Thursday's series opener versus the Marlins at Wrigley Field. Taillon might operate with some light restrictions in his season debut, as he was capped at 3.2 innings and 68 pitches in his second and final rehab start with Triple-A Iowa this past Friday. Ben Brown has delivered a pair of strong starts in his two outings as the No. 5 member of the Cubs rotation, but unless manager Craig Counsell elects to expand the rotation to six men or decides to bump veteran Kyle Hendricks out of a starting role, the rookie could lose out on a spot once Taillon is activated.... Cubs' Jameson Taillon: Will make season debut next week
Cubs manager Craig Counsell said Saturday that Taillon (back) will return from the 15-day injured list to make his next start in the majors, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Taillon covered 3.2 scoreless innings and threw 68 pitches in his final rehab start Friday with Triple-A Iowa. The Cubs haven't yet determined which day Taillon will pitch, but he could be activated from the IL as soon as Wednesday in Arizona.... See More ... See Less -
Cubs' Jameson Taillon: Moves to IL
The Cubs placed Taillon (back) on the 15-day injured list Thursday. Taillon resumed facing hitters earlier this week, but after failing to pitch in the Cactus League while he recovered from a back strain, he'll need some time to build up before he's ready to make his 2024 debut. He's tentatively scheduled to face hitters again Friday before potentially heading out on a minor-league rehab assignment or pitching in simulated games at extended spring training in Arizona.... Cubs' Jameson Taillon: Throwing live BP Monday
Taillon (back) will throw one inning of live batting practice Monday, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. He'll then face hitters again Friday and, if that goes well, will make an appearance in a minor-league game after that. Taillon is expected to be sidelined until at least mid-April with his back injury, and a clearer timetable for his return won't be available until he makes some rehab appearances.... See More ... Cubs' Jameson Taillon: Out until mid-April
Cubs manager Craig Counsell announced Friday that Taillon (back) will begin the season on the injured list and won't be ready to return until at least mid-April, Andy Martinez of Marquee Sports Network reports. The right-hander only recently resumed mound work after recovering from the back tightness that scratched him from a spring start March 9, so it's not a shock he won't be ready to begin the regular season. Taillon is throwing a bullpen session Friday and will need some time to build up to a starter's workload, so a mid-April return is likely a best-case scenario.... See More ... See Less -
Cubs' Jameson Taillon: Throws off mound Wednesday
Taillon (back) threw a 10-pitch, touch-and-feel bullpen session Wednesday, Andy Martinez of Marquee Sports Network reports. Taillon is finally ready to ease back into mound work after a lower-back issue cropped up nearly two weeks ago. The right-hander has not made any official game appearances this spring and it seems unlikely that he'll be ready for one before the Cactus League schedule runs out. He will begin the season on the injured list, with a potential timetable available later on as he continues to ramp back up.... See More ... See Less -
Cubs' Jameson Taillon: Nearing mound work
Taillon said Sunday his back has responded well to rest and treatment, and he plans to throw off a mound Tuesday or Wednesday, Bruce Levine of 670TheScore.com reports. The right-hander's back didn't initially respond well after he was scratched from his start March 9 due to back tightness, but his status has apparently improved significantly over the past few days. Taillon has yet to see game action this spring as he focused on his mechanics early in camp, so even if completely healthy he may not be fully ramped up for the start of the regular season.... See More ... See Less -
Cubs' Jameson Taillon: Could miss Opening Day
Cubs manager Craig Counsell said Sunday that Taillon's availability for Opening Day is in jeopardy with the right-hander having shown little improvement in his recovery from a lower back injury since being scratched ahead of Saturday's scheduled Cactus League start against the Rockies, Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic reports. While Counsell noted that the Cubs aren't yet concerned about Taillon potentially facing a long-term absence, the 32-year-old will be sent in for further testing as the organization looks to get a clearer picture of the injury. Taillon has yet to pitch in a Cactus League game this spring, but he hadn't been shut down from activity prior to being scratched Saturday, as he had been building up in simulated games. However, if Taillon isn't able to quickly move past the back issue within the next week, a stint on the injured list to begin the season would become an increasingly likely outcome. If Taillon is on the shelf at the start of the season, the Cubs could open up a rotation spot for one of Javier Assad, Drew Smyly or Hayden Wesneski.... See More ... See Less
