The Mets designated Wendle for assignment Wednesday. Unless another team opts to put in a waiver claim for Wendle, the Mets will owe him the money remaining on his one-year, $2 million deal. Signed in November to provide depth in the infield, Wendle rarely saw action for the Mets and struggled to produce in his limited opportunities, slashing .222/.243/.250 across 37 plate appearances.... Mets' Joey Wendle: Draws rare start
Wendle will start at second base and bat seventh in Monday's game against the Cardinals, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. Wendle will start for just the ninth time through the Mets' 35 games this season, handling second base while Jeff McNeil gets a look in left field. The 34-year-old will likely to continue seeing light use in his utility role unless the Mets lose one of their regular infielders to injury.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Joey Wendle: Getting first start of season
Wendle will start at second base and bat ninth in Monday's game versus the Tigers, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. Wendle didn't make an appearance in the lineup or off the bench in the weekend series against the Brewers, but he will start the first game of a three-game set versus the Tigers. Jeff McNeil is receiving a day off.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Joey Wendle: In lineup Thursday
Wendle (shoulder) is starting at second base for the Mets' spring training game against Washington on Thursday. Shoulder soreness has kept Wendle out of Grapefruit League play this spring, but he is now set to make his spring debut. Wendle posted just a .610 OPS during his two seasons with Miami, and he will most likely compete for at-bats as a utility man with the Mets this year.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Joey Wendle: Nursing sore shoulder
Wendle has been dealing with a sore right shoulder, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. Wendle's shoulder has prevented him from playing so far during spring training, but he is on track to make his Grapefruit League debut in about a week. The 33-year-old infielder slashed .212/.248/.306 across 318 plate appearances with Miami last season and figures to operate in a utility role for the Mets in 2024.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Joey Wendle: Latches on with Mets
Wendle signed a one-year, $2 million contract with the Mets on Wednesday, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports. After two seasons with the Marlins, Wendle will remain in the NL East and presumably serve in a utility role with the Mets. The 33-year-old infielder had his worst season at the plate in 2023, slashing .212/.248/.306 across 318 plate appearances. While Wendle's defensive versatility may get him in the lineup fairly often next year, his poor bat puts a low ceiling on his fantasy value.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Joey Wendle: On bench again Thursday
Wendle remains out of the lineup Thursday at Milwaukee. Wendle has batted just .222/.257/.323 in 103 games (299 plate appearances) this season and seems to have finally lost his grip on a starting role. Garrett Hampson is playing shortstop Thursday for the fourth time in the Marlins' last six games. Three of those starts for Hampson have come against right-handers, including Thursday's tilt versus Brewers righty Adrian Houser.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Joey Wendle: On bench Wednesday
Wendle is not in the lineup Wednesday at Milwaukee. Garrett Hampson will start at shortstop and bat seventh as the Marlins take on right-hander Trevor Megill and a parade of Brewers relievers. Wendle owns a brutal .224/.259/.325 slash line through 102 games (297 plate appearances) this season.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Joey Wendle: Gets breather Saturday
Wendle isn't in the Marlins' lineup Saturday against Philadelphia, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. Wendle will get a day off after going 3-for-16 with a homer, four RBI and three runs scored across seven games to begin September. Garrett Hampson will instead start at shortstop and bat seventh.... Marlins' Joey Wendle: Sitting against lefty
Wendle is not in the lineup Friday against the Phillies. Jon Berti will start at shortstop and bat eighth with left-hander Cristopher Sanchez taking the mound for Philadelphia. Wendle has an overall .589 OPS on the season and should continue to sit versus southpaws.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Joey Wendle: Big night in rout
Wendle went 3-for-4 with a double, a home run, three runs scored and four RBI in Wednesday's 11-4 win over the Dodgers. The 33-year-old infielder hadn't produced a multi-hit performance since July 7, slashing a woeful .143/.179/.190 over the 42 games in between, and his only other homer in 2023 came June 9. Wendle had begun ceding playing time at shortstop to Garrett Hampson in September, but this offensive eruption might help stabilize his spot in the starting nine.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Joey Wendle: Sitting against lefty
Wendle is not in the lineup Tuesday versus the Dodgers. Garrett Hampson will start at shortstop and bat eighth as the Marlins take on left-hander Clayton Kershaw. The left-handed-hitting Wendle has drawn only 28 plate appearances versus southpaws this year.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Joey Wendle: Sitting Saturday
Wendle isn't in the Marlins' lineup Saturday against the Nationals, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. Wendle is just 1-for-13 across his last four games, so he'll head to the bench Saturday amid his offensive woes. Garrett Hampson will start at shortstop instead and bat seventh.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Joey Wendle: On bench Tuesday
Wendle is not in the lineup Tuesday versus the Rays. Wendle has slashed just .229/.264/.325 with one home run and five stolen bases across 90 games (268 plate appearances) this season for the Marlins. Jon Berti will start at shortstop and bat ninth Tuesday against the Rays and right-hander Aaron Civale.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Joey Wendle: Takes seat Sunday
Wendle is not in the lineup Sunday against the Nationals. Jon Berti will start at shortstop and bat ninth versus the Nats and right-hander Trevor Williams. Wendle went 0-for-2 in the Marlins' loss to Washington on Saturday and holds a weak .229/.264/.325 slash line across 268 total plate appearances this year.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Joey Wendle: Sits down Friday
Wendle isn't in the Marlins' lineup Friday against the Nationals, Paige Leckie of MLB.com reports. Wendle went 1-for-7 during Miami's previous series against San Diego, so he'll take a seat Friday amid his offensive woes. Wendle's absence will allow Jon Berti to start at shortstop and bat ninth.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Joey Wendle: Nabs fifth steal
Wendle went 1-for-3 with a double and a stolen base in Wednesday's 4-0 loss to the Padres. The infielder had the Marlins' only extra-base hit of the day in the fifth inning and promptly stole third base, but he was left stranded. Wendle hasn't had a multi-hit performance since July 7, batting a feeble .159 (16-for-88) in 34 games since with zero homers, seven RBI and nine runs, and Wednesday's steal was only his fifth of the season and his first since late June. Despite his prolonged slump, Wendle remains on the strong side of a platoon at shortstop, and Jon Berti has done little to wrest away more playing time from him.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Joey Wendle: Taking seat Wednesday
Wendle is not in the lineup for Wednesday's contest versus the Astros. Wendle looks to be getting a routine day off for the series finale. With Wendle beginning Wednesday's game on the bench, Jon Berti will draw the start at shortstop.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Joey Wendle: Gets Wednesday off
Wendle is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Reds. Wendle often sits against left-handed pitchers, but he'll give way to Jon Berti at shortstop Wednesday while a right-hander (Graham Ashcraft) takes the hill for the Reds. The 33-year-old's move to the bench may have more to do with the Marlins and Reds getting together for a day game after a night game, with Wednesday's series finale beginning at 12:35 p.m. ET.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Joey Wendle: Sits against southpaw
Wendle is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rangers. Wendle is taking a seat for the series finale while the Rangers bring southpaw Andrew Heaney to the hill. Jon Berti will fill in at shortstop for Wendle.... See More ... See Less

Michael Baron@michaelgbaron15H agoThe #Mets have lost two of the three blown save chances from Edwin Díaz so far this month. We can point to multiple massive problems with this club, but losing that way with a closer who just doesn’t seem confident can be a dealbreaker. Hopefully they can find a way to win.

Michael Baron@michaelgbaron1D agoAnother lifeless effort from the #Mets on Friday, this time against the #Marlins. @andrewsteeled is wondering why people think this can be a playoff team at this point on @just_mets this morning. There’s certain;y nothing convincing me right now. https://t.co/1L8MJTREGa

Michael Baron@michaelgbaron2D agoThis is the 5th time the #Mets have been shutout, the 11th time they’ve been held to one run or less(!!!). That’s 25 percent of their games - they’re 0-11 in all of those games.
