Berrios did not factor into the decision Monday against the Orioles, allowing two runs on three hits and one walk over seven innings. He struck out four. Berrios allowed two solo homers to Adley Rutschman but otherwise only allowed one additional single through seven quality innings. It was a nice bounce-back performance for Berrios, who was lit up for eight runs in his last start against the Phillies after having allowed just seven runs total through his first seven appearances. He will carry a 2.82 ERA and 1.05 WHIP into his next start, tentatively scheduled to take place over the weekend when the Blue Jays host the Rays.... See More ... See Less

Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Lit up by Phillies
Berrios (4-3) took the loss Tuesday against Philadelphia, surrendering eight earned runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out seven batters across 3.2 innings. Berrios had trouble locating the strike zone Tuesday and often found himself working with a lot of traffic on the basepaths, which were twice cleared by home runs. He was able to strike out batters at a notable rate, matching his season high in roughly half the innings, but he was immediately pulled after Bryce Harper's fourth-inning grand slam made it an 8-0 game. Despite Berrios' ugly performance Tuesday, he still holds a 2.85 ERA and 1.12 WHIP through his first eight starts, and he'll get a chance to bounce back against the Orioles on Sunday.... See More ... Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Hard-luck loss Tuesday
Berrios (4-2) took the loss Tuesday against the Royals, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk over seven innings. He struck out three. Berrios was solid Tuesday, holding the Royals to two runs on a Michael Massey homer in the second inning en route to a sixth quality start in seven outings this year. However, the 29-year-old Berrios was ultimately stuck with a second straight loss to Kansas City as the Blue Jays could only muster a lone run off Cole Ragans. Berrios lowered his ERA to an excellent 1.44 with a 1.01 WHIP and 31:13 K:BB through 43.2 innings this season. He'll look to get back in the win column in his next start, currently lined up for next week in Philadelphia.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Takes loss against Royals
Berrios (4-1) took the loss Thursday against Kansas City, allowing two runs on three hits and three walks with a strikeout over five innings. All of the damage against Berrios came via a Salvador Perez two-run home run in the first inning. Berrios failed to complete six innings for the first time this season, an impossible task considering Thursday's game was called due to rain after five frames. The outing snapped Berrios's scoreless inning streak that spanned 21.2 innings. He's tentatively scheduled for another start against the Royals early next week.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Improves to 4-0
Berrios (4-0) earned the win Saturday in San Diego after he struck out five and allowed five hits and two walks over six scoreless innings. The veteran right-hander delivered his fifth straight quality start to begin the season and hasn't given up a run over his past three outings. Berrios has been one of the best pitchers in baseball early in 2024 and now has a 0.85 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 27:9 K:BB across 31.2 innings. He tentatively lines up to face the Royals on the road next week.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Earns another quality start
Berrios (2-0) picked up the win Monday, allowing four hits and a walk over 6.2 scoreless innings against the Mariners. He struck out six. Berrios was dominant Monday for his third quality start of the season, yielding no extra-base hits as part of his first scoreless outing of 2024. He got into a little trouble in the fifth inning, allowing back-to-back singles, but he then consecutively retired Josh Rojas and J.P. Crawford to get out of the jam. Of pitchers with three starts this season, Berrios ranks first in ERA (1.45). His next appearance is set to come Sunday against the Rockies.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Sharp in no-decision
Berrios did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing one run on six hits and three walks over six innings against Houston. He struck out two. Berrios held the Astros at bay Tuesday, allowing a lone run on a Jose Altuve homer to lead off the fourth inning. The 29-year-old Berrios now has back-to-back quality starts to open the year after going 11-12 with a 3.65 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 184:52 K:BB in 32 outings last season. He's currently in line for a home matchup with the Mariners in his next start early next week.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Picks up win on Opening Day
Berrios (1-0) went six innings and allowed two runs on six hits and one walk to earn the win Thursday against the Rays. He struck out six. After kicking off 2023 with two straight losses, Berrios wasted no time getting in the win column to start the 2024 campaign, going six strong against Tampa Bay. Berrios was tagged for a solo homer by Yandy Diaz on just his fifth pitch of the game. However, he limited the Rays' Nos. 2 through 5 hitters to a combined 0-for-11. Berrios' next start is tentatively scheduled to come against the Astros.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Tapped for Opening Day start
Manager John Schneider announced Tuesday that Berrios will start the Blue Jays' season opener March 28 versus the Rays in Tampa Bay, Kaitlyn McGrath of The Athletic reports. The assignment likely would have fallen to Kevin Gausman (shoulder), but he's still getting ramped back up and won't be ready for Opening Day. Berrios made 32 starts for Toronto last season, finishing with a 3.65 ERA and 184:52 K:BB over 189.2 innings.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Let down by glove Sunday
Berrios gave up four runs, but only one earned, on six hits over 4.2 innings in Sunday's Grapefruit League game against the Phillies. He struck out two without walking a batter. The right-hander's own error led to a three-run second inning for Philly, but Berrios shook it off and stuck around long enough to build up to 78 pitches (53 strikes). He's allowed only two earned runs in 13 innings this spring with a 9:2 K:BB, and the 29-year-old could get the Opening Day start for the Blue Jays with Kevin Gausman (shoulder) looking at a delayed start to his season.... Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Strong spring continues
Berrios allowed one run on three hits and a walk over 3.1 innings in Tuesday's Grapefruit League game against the Yankees. He struck out three. Facing a lineup mostly made up of bench players and prospects, Berrios cruised through 63 pitches (39 strikes) without much difficulty. Tuesday's run was the first the 29-year-old right-hander had given up this spring, and through 8.1 innings he's posted a solid 7:2 K:BB. Berrios has won double-digit games in six straight full seasons and posted a sub-4.00 ERA in five of them, and the Blue Jays are counting on him to provide similar reliability in 2024.... Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Solid start to spring
Berrios gave up two hits and struck out one in two scoreless innings during Thursday's Grapefruit League game against the Phillies. Facing a lineup that included only a couple of likely Opening Day starters in Trea Turner and Bryson Stott, Berrios pounded the strike zone and fired 20 of 29 pitches over the plate. The 29-year-old righty was his usual rock-solid self in 2023, posting a 3.65 ERA and 1.19 WHIP over 189.2 innings with a 23.5 percent strikeout rate against a 6.6 percent walk rate, and he figures to provide stability to the middle of the Toronto rotation once again this season.... Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Set for spring debut Thursday
Berrios is scheduled to start Thursday's Grapefruit League game against the Phillies, Hazel Mae of Sportsnet reports. Berrios had initially been expected to make his spring debut Wednesday, but the Blue Jays opted to push him back a day, likely so that he can stay more closely aligned in the pitching order with top-of-rotation arms Kevin Gausman and Chris Bassitt. After submitting a bloated 5.23 ERA and 1.42 WHIP over 32 starts in 2022, Berrios delivered a return to form last season, bringing those ratios down to 3.65 and 1.19, respectively, while bumping his strikeout rate back up from 19.8 to 23.5 percent. Set to turn 30 years old in May, Berrios doesn't look like he'll ever emerge as the staff ace some envisioned he would become during his early years in Minnesota, but aside from the disastrous 2022 season, he's largely been a dependable arm for fantasy pitching staffs throughout his career.... Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Confirmed starter for Game 2
Berrios will start Game 2 of the American League Wild Card Series on Wednesday against the Twins, Blake Murphy of Sportsnet reports. The Blue Jays confirmed earlier in the day that Kevin Gausman will take the ball for Game 1, and it'll be Berrios who gets a shot in the second game of the series. The right-hander gave up four runs in each of his last two starts of the regular season, so he'll look for a better result in Wednesday's outing.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Strikes out 10 in loss
Berrios (11-12) took the loss Wednesday, allowing four runs on five hits and three walks over six innings against the Yankees. He struck out 10. While Berrios ended his campaign with a season-high 10 strikeouts, he gave up two runs on an Aaron Judge homer in the fourth inning before surrendering two more runs in the fifth, as the Yankees handed him a second straight loss. Berrios has allowed four runs in consecutive starts against New York after holding opponents to two runs or fewer in each of his previous three outings. The 29-year-old right-hander will finish the year with a 3.65 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 184 strikeouts across 32 starts (189.2 innings).... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Falls to Yankees
Berrios (11-11) took the loss Thursday, allowing four runs on seven hits over 5.2 innings against the Yankees. He struck out six. Most of the damage against Berrios came in the first inning on Jake Bauers' three-run homer. While Berrios would settle down and hold the Yankees off the board until the sixth, he'd still ultimately wind up with his first loss in his last four outings. The 29-year-old Berrios had been pitching well coming into Thursday's appearance, with a 1.80 ERA and 22 strikeouts in his previous three starts (20 innings). He'll look to end a solid regular season on a high note in his next outing, currently scheduled as a home rematch with the Yankees next week.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Comes away with win Sunday
Berrios (10-10) got the win Sunday over the Royals, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out seven over seven innings. Berrios kept the Royals off the board through five frames but surrendered two extra-base hits and a walk in the sixth which led to two runs. He had given up six home runs across his last three starts but was able to keep the ball in the park Sunday and picked up his first win since Aug. 5 while reaching seven innings for the first time since July 6. The 29-year-old has had an up and down season, but still sits at a respectable 3.63 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 160:49 K:BB in 171 innings and lines up for a start against the Red Sox his next time out.... Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Goes six innings in no-decision
Berrios did not factor into the decision Monday, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk over six innings in a 6-5 win over the Athletics. He struck out seven. Berrios blanked Oakland through his first four innings before giving up solo homers in the fifth and sixth. Still, it was an encouraging outing for the 29-year-old Berrios, who'd given up 10 runs over his previous two starts (12 innings). Overall, he's 9-10 with a 3.68 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 153:47 K:BB across 28 starts (164 innings) this season. Berrios is currently scheduled for a home matchup with the Royals in his next outing.... Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Hit hard in loss
Berrios (9-10) took the loss Tuesday as the Blue Jays fell 5-4 to the Nationals, giving up five runs on six hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out two. The right-hander essentially made only two mistakes, but they resulted in a two-run homer by Carter Kieboom in the second inning and a three-run blast by Keibert Ruiz in the fifth. Berrios has served up multiple homers in three of his last four starts, a worrying trend as Toronto tries to claw its way back into the playoff picture, and he stumbles into the final month of the season having posted a 5.53 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 23:6 K:BB through 27.2 innings in August. Berrios will look to get back on track in his next outing, likely to come early next week in Oakland.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Falls to Orioles
Berrios (9-9) took the loss Thursday, allowing five runs on nine hits over six innings against Baltimore. He struck out four. Berrios delivered three perfect innings before running into trouble his second time through the order, ultimately allowing five runs on nine hits over his final three frames. After pitching to a 1.84 ERA across five starts in July, Berrios has surrendered 12 runs through his first four starts (20.2 innings) in August. Overall, the 29-year-old sports a respectable 3.55 ERA with a 1.22 WHIP and 144:44 K:BB in 26 starts (152 innings) this season. He's currently in line for a favorable home matchup with the Nationals in his next outing.... See More ... See Less
