Cardinals' Miles Mikolas: Pitches well in no-decision
Mikolas allowed one run on two hits and a walk while striking out four over five innings in a no-decision versus the Red Sox on Saturday.
Mikolas threw just 79 pitches (54 strikes) -- it's possible manager Oliver Marmol didn't want the right-hander to go through the order a third time in a close game. The lone run on Mikolas' line was a solo home run by Rafael Devers in the fourth inning. Mikolas has allowed three runs or fewer in six of his outings this season, but he's given up five or more runs in his other four starts. He's at a 5.77 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 39:11 K:BB through 53 innings overall. The veteran is projected for a home start versus the rival Cubs his next time out.

Cardinals' Miles Mikolas: Victorious in quality outing
Mikolas (3-5) allowed three runs on six hits and three walks over six innings Sunday, striking out three and earning a win over the Brewers.
It looked like Mikolas would be chased early after Milwaukee plated three runs in the first inning. Instead, he settled in for a quality start and allowed only one Brewer to reach scoring position over the next five frames. He now has four quality starts through nine outings this season, with two coming in his last three appearances. Mikolas forced just four whiffs Sunday and hasn't reached double digits in any start this year. He'll carry a 6.19 ERA into his next outing, which is lined up to be at home against Boston.

Cardinals' Miles Mikolas: Falters in fifth against Mets
Mikolas (2-5) took the loss Tuesday against the Mets, allowing six runs on nine hits while striking out three over four innings.
Mikolas coasted through four innings unscathed before the Mets' offense finally came alive in the fifth. They chased him for six runs on six hits, highlighted by a Brandon Nimmo three-run homer, and he was pulled before even recording an out in the inning. After a promising start, Tuesday's outing ended up being a total disaster for Mikolas, the fourth time this year he's given up five or more runs. The 35-year-old now owns a 6.43 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 32:7 K:BB in 42 innings and lines up for a weekend start on the road against the Brewers.

Cardinals' Miles Mikolas: Quality start in loss
Mikolas (2-4) took the loss Wednesday against the Tigers, allowing three runs on six hits over six innings. He struck out four.
Most of the damage against Mikolas came early -- Colt Keith opened the scoring with an RBI double in the second inning before Matt Vierling extended Detroit's lead to 3-0 with a two-run homer in the third. The 35-year-old Mikolas held the Tigers off the board in his final three frames to earn a quality start, but the Cardinals couldn't climb out of the early hole, sticking the right-hander with the loss. Mikolas has been better after a rough start to the year, allowing five runs over 11.2 innings in his last two starts. His ERA now sits at 5.68 with a 1.39 WHIP and 29:7 K:BB across seven starts (38 innings). Mikolas is slated for a home matchup with the Mets in his next outing.

Cardinals' Miles Mikolas: Just misses quality start
Mikolas (2-3) picked up the win Friday, giving up two runs on seven hits over 5.2 innings in a 4-2 victory over the Mets. He struck out five without walking a batter.
The right-hander fell just short of his third quality start of the season, getting the hook in the sixth inning after 85 pitches (65 strikes) following doubles by Francisco Lindor and J.D. Martinez. Mikolas also served up a homer to light-hitting catcher Tomas Nido, the fourth long ball he's allowed in his last two starts, Mikolas will carry a 5.91 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 25:7 K:BB through 32 innings into his next outing, scheduled to come on the road next week in Detroit.

Mikolas gave up a two-run homer to Rhys Hoskins during the opening frame but rebounded and was staked to a 4-2 lead after three innings. The right-hander then surrendered three more runs on a pair of homers in the fourth, setting him up for the loss. The 35-year-old entered Saturday's contest having not given up a homer in his previous three starts. Mikolas has two quality starts in five turns through the rotation but has allowed exactly five runs in each of his other three outings, which results in a 6.49 ERA and 1.52 WHIP over 26.1 frames.

Mikolas tossed four scoreless frames before the Diamondbacks rallied in the fifth and chased him out of the inning. He would allow a sacrifice fly to Jace Peterson and an RBI double to Jake McCarthy before walking consecutive hitters and exiting the game with the bases loaded. The bullpen did him no favors, allowing all three inherited runners to score. Mikolas didn't fool many in this one, registering just five whiffs on 75 pitches. It's been mixed results for Mikolas early on, as he'll take a 5.82 ERA and 1.43 WHIP into his next start, which projects to be against the division-leading Brewers next weekend.

Mikolas rolled through four shutout frames before the Phillies put a pair of runs on the board in the fifth inning. It was his second straight quality start after getting tagged with five runs in his season debut. He now owns a 4.76 ERA with a lackluster 12:5 K:BB through 17 innings. Mikolas hasn't had the easiest of starts to open the season, facing the Dodgers in his 2024 debut before Tuesday's contest. However, he's escaped the pair of starts with a 1-1 record and has brought his ERA down to 6.10. With a quality start under his belt, Mikolas will look to keep the ball rolling in his next start, tentatively scheduled for Monday against the Phillies.

The Dodgers jumped out to a quick lead on Mikolas, scoring twice in the first inning before the 35-year-old right-hander allowed three more runs on a pair of homers in the third. It's certainly not the start to the season Mikolas wanted after he struggled to a 9-13 record with a 4.78 ERA across 35 starts last year. He'll look to get on track in his next outing, tentatively lined up for early next week in San Diego.

Cardinals' Miles Mikolas: Named starter for Opening Day
Manager Oliver Marmol announced Sunday that Mikolas will be the Cardinals' starter for Opening Day against the Dodgers on March 28, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports.
Presumed Opening Day starter Sonny Gray (hamstring) won't be ready to pitch, so Mikolas will instead receive the nod. The 35-year-old retooled his slider during the offseason after a disappointing 2023 that saw him post a 4.78 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 137:39 K:BB across 201.1 innings.

Cardinals' Miles Mikolas: Trying to shake off poor 2023
Mikolas is retooling his slider for 2024 after a disappointing 2023 season during which he had a 4.78 ERA over 201.1 innings, John Denton of MLB.com reports.
Mikolas' poor whiff rate (16.7 percent) contributed to his problems in 2023. "I'm working on some different breaking balls and working with some other stuff and so far, so good," said Mikolas. "Maybe not so much [changing] the shape as I am mixing things up more. The mix I had last year wasn't overly successful, so maybe it bodes better if I am mixing things up better." As part of his changes, Mikolas also wants to throw fewer strikes -- batters hit .225 off of him after taking two strikes in 2023. Mikolas has a lot to prove as the longest-tenured member of the Cardinals' rotation following Adam Wainwright's retirement, but it's unclear if his offseason changes will help the 35-year-old get his ERA back under 4.00.
