Player Outlook
It's been a slow walk through the minors for Blaze Alexander, a 2018 11th-round draft pick that parlayed a strong 2022 season at Double-A Amarillo into a spot on the 40-man roster and shot at Triple-A Reno in 2023. He started strong but fractured a thumb in April that sidelined him for two months. The 24-year-old infielder finished with an .865 OPS and .281 average, fueled by a .398 BABIP. The power added in 2022 fell off, which may be attributed to the injury. The pop complemented his flashy fielding and arm (his best tool). As a shortstop by trade, Alexander sits behind Jordan Lawlar and Geraldo Perdomo on the major-league roster. As such, the organization introduced him to second and third base, but the same obstacles exist at those positions. Alexander may best be suited as a utility backup infielder.

  • Diamondbacks' Blaze Alexander: Back on bench Sunday

Alexander is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Orioles. The right-handed-hitting Alexander started each of the past three games, but he appears to be viewed as a short-side platoon player, with two of those three starts coming against left-handed pitching. He'll give way to Kevin Newman at shortstop Sunday while the Orioles bring right-hander Dean Kremer to the hill.

  • Diamondbacks' Blaze Alexander: Enters starting lineup

Alexander started at shortstop, batted ninth and went 0-for-2 with a walk in Thursday's 5-4 win over Cincinnati. Alexander made his first start in four games, as suspect defense kept his potentially productive bat (.845 OPS, .194 ISO) out of the lineup in favor of Kevin Newman (.525, .125). Alexander has cooled down recently at the plate, as the rookie is 1-for-13 over the last seven contests.

  • Diamondbacks' Blaze Alexander: Fading into reserve role

Alexander is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Reds. Alexander is on the bench for a third straight game, with all three absences coming against right-handed pitching. The rookie has a lowly .544 OPS over his past nine games and has gotten poor reviews for his work in the field, so he looks like he'll remain in a backup role at shortstop behind Kevin Newman until Geraldo Perdomo (knee) is back from the injured list.

  • Diamondbacks' Blaze Alexander: Not starting Tuesday

Alexander is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Reds, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports. Alexander will give up the shortstop spot to Kevin Newman for a second straight game. The pair should continue to split work until Geraldo Perdomo (knee) returns.

  • Diamondbacks' Blaze Alexander: Sitting after three straight starts

Alexander is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Padres. Alexander had started each of the previous three games at shortstop, going 1-for-9 with one walk. He'll give way to Kevin Newman for the series finale, but the playing time at shortstop will likely tilt in Alexander's direction until Geraldo Perdomo (knee) is ready to return from the injured list.

  • Diamondbacks' Blaze Alexander: Not in Tuesday's lineup

Alexander is absent from the lineup for Tuesday's contest against the Dodgers. Alexander has now started at shortstop just twice over the last eight games (although he did make one other start at designated hitter during that span). Kevin Newman will again be at shortstop Tuesday.

  • Diamondbacks' Blaze Alexander: Bats leadoff Monday

Alexander batted leadoff and went 0-for-1 with three walks and two runs scored in Monday's 8-4 loss to the Dodgers. Alexander served as the leadoff batter for the first time, as manager Torey Lovullo recently tweaked the top of the order. Primary leadoff batter Ketel Marte has been moved to third in the order. Alexander has been adept at getting on base, posting a .406 OBP over 69 plate appearances.

  • Diamondbacks' Blaze Alexander: Takes seat Sunday

Alexander is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Mariners. Alexander has gone 9-for-24 with five doubles, a homer, nine RBI and four runs over his past seven games, but he'll head to the bench Sunday. Kevin Newman will start at shortstop in the series finale at Seattle.

  • Diamondbacks' Blaze Alexander: Doubles, scores in loss

Alexander went 1-for-2 with a walk, double and run scored in Saturday's 3-1 loss to Seattle. Alexander walked with two outs in the eighth inning and came around to score Arizona's lone run on Jake McCarthy's triple. The rookie shortstop has hit safely in six of the last seven contests, going 9-for-24 with six extra-base hits, nine RBI and four runs over that stretch. Alexander's bat has played well, but defense could cost him opportunities. He ranks last among shortstops with minus-7 outs above average and minus-5 runs prevented.

  • Diamondbacks' Blaze Alexander: Logs hit in return

Alexander started at shortstop and went 1-for-4 in Wednesday's 5-1 loss to the Cardinals. Alexander returned to the lineup after missing two games due to a hamstring. He was moved up to second in the order, as a couple of Arizona regulars were getting a breather. Alexander also committed his fourth throwing error of the season (minus-7 outs above average), although the fielding issues haven't affected his playing time or offense. Alexander is hitting .316/.371/.915 with four doubles, three home runs and 15 RBI over 62 plate appearances.

  • Diamondbacks' Blaze Alexander: Out again Tuesday

Alexander (hamstring) remains out of the lineup for Tuesday's contest in St. Louis. Alexander tweaked his right hamstring Sunday and has now missed two straight starts. He was reportedly available off the bench Monday, so it shouldn't be long before he's ready to return to the lineup. However, with a team off day coming Thursday, the Diamondbacks might elect to hold him out until Friday. Kevin Newman will be at shortstop again Tuesday.

  • Diamondbacks' Blaze Alexander: Exits early Sunday

Alexander (undisclosed) exited Sunday's matchup with the Giants in the bottom of the fifth inning, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports. Alexander was replaced at shortstop in the bottom of the fifth frame, exiting the game after going 0-for-2 from the plate Sunday. It's unclear why the 24-year-old was removed from the contest and more information will likely be provided in the near future. Kevin Newman replaced Alexander at shortstop, batting ninth against San Francisco.

  • Diamondbacks' Blaze Alexander: Smacks first grand slam

Alexander went 3-for-5 with a home run, five RBI and two runs scored in Friday's win over the Giants. Alexander enjoyed the best game of his young career, hitting his first career grand slam in the eighth inning. The 24-year-old rookie has filled in admirably since Geraldo Perdomo (knee) was placed on the injured list April 4. Alexander is slashing .340/.404/.596 with three home runs and 12 RBI over his first 52 plate appearances.

  • Diamondbacks' Blaze Alexander: Heads to bench in series opener

Alexander is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Giants. Alexander will take a seat for the series opener as the Giants bring ace right-hander Logan Webb to the hill. While the rookie still looks to be the Diamondbacks' preferred option at shortstop while Geraldo Perdomo (knee) is on the shelf, Alexander might have a shorter leash than anticipated while he's experienced some early hiccups defensively. Jace Peterson will cover shortstop Thursday.

  • Diamondbacks' Blaze Alexander: Homers in win

Alexander went 2-for-2 with a walk and solo home run in Wednesday's 5-3 win over the Rockies. Alexander bopped his second home run of the season in the second inning and has hit safely in four consecutive games. He's been the primary fill-in at shortstop since Geraldo Perdomo injured his knee. In the six games since the injury, the righty-hitting Alexander has started five, four against lefties and one against a righty. The lefty-hitting Jace Peterson, who started the one game Alexander didn't, is around and could see action against right-handers. Kevin Newman could also see action in short, but that would counter the organization's desire expressed during spring training to give its prospects consistent at-bats.

  • Diamondbacks' Blaze Alexander: Regular role could await

Alexander is expected to see regular starts at shortstop due to Geraldo Perdomo's (knee) expected placement on the 10-day injured list ahead of Sunday's game in Atlanta, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports. According to Piecoro, Perdomo tore the meniscus in his right knee Wednesday and needs surgery, which will likely keep him out for at least one month. The righty-hitting Alexander had already been a mainstay in the lineup versus left-handed pitching early on in the season, but the rookie should get the opportunity to face same-handed pitching more frequently while Perdomo is on the mend. Along with Alexander, utility men Jace Peterson and Kevin Newman -- the latter of whom is expected to be called up from Triple-A Reno -- will be candidates for added reps at shortstop. Alexander posted an .865 OPS with eight home runs and two stolen bases over 73 games at Reno last season and has gotten off to a strong start in the big leagues, slashing .278/.350/.444 through his first 20 plate appearances.

  • Diamondbacks' Blaze Alexander: Starts at short Saturday

Alexander started at shortstop and went 0-for-4 in Saturday's 9-8 loss to Atlanta. Alexander was added to the starting lineup against lefty Max Fried, as the Diamondbacks are operating without primary shortstop Geraldo Perdomo (knee), who was expected to undergo an MRI on Saturday. Alexander could make a second straight start Sunday with another left-hander -- Chris Sale -- scheduled for Atlanta. The rookie infielder is 5-for-18 with a home run, three RBI and a stolen base with seven strikeouts to begin his MLB career.

  • Diamondbacks' Blaze Alexander: Productive in win

Alexander went 2-for-3 with an RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base in Tuesday's 7-0 win over the Yankees. Batting out of the two-hole versus Nestor Cortes on Tuesday, Alexander got the scoring started, driving in Ketel Marte with a base hit in the second inning. He'd proceed to steal second, his first major-league stolen base, before coming around to score on a Eugenio Suarez single. The 24-year-old Alexander has been solid off the bench to start his rookie campaign, going 4-for-10 with a pair of RBI. He slashed .291/.408/.457 with eight home runs and two stolen bases in 73 games with Triple-A Reno last year.

  • Diamondbacks' Blaze Alexander: Batting second Tuesday

Alexander is starting at designated hitter and batting second in Tuesday's game versus the Yankees, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports. Alexander has now been in the lineup each of the three times the Diamondbacks have faced a lefty, but he was down in the No. 7 spot the first two times. The rookie will be elevated to the No. 2 spot in the order with Corbin Carroll getting the night off. Alexander has not made a start against a right-hander.

  • Diamondbacks' Blaze Alexander: Two hits in debut

Alexander went 2-for-5 with an RBI in Thursday's 16-1 win over Colorado on Opening Day. Alexander started at designated hitter and batted seventh against left-hander Kyle Freeland in his MLB debut after beating out Emmanuel Rivera for the final bench spot. He also played shortstop for the final inning. Diamondbacks general manager Mike Hazen earlier this spring indicated a preference for the 24-year-old Alexander to get regular at-bats, but that may not happen on the major-league roster with the lefty-hitting Joc Pederson expected to be in the starting lineup against righties. Arizona faces right-hander Cal Quantrill on Friday, which could give an indication of how manager Torey Lovullo plans to use Alexander.
