The Reds optioned Young to Triple-A Louisville on Sunday. He'll give up his spot in the bullpen to fellow lefty Justin Wilson (shoulder), who was reinstated from the 15-day injured list in a corresponding move. Young has spent most of the season on the IL recovering from a back injury, but after being activated last week, he made three appearances out of the Cincinnati bullpen and gave up four hits and no walks over two scoreless innings.... Reds' Alex Young: Back from injured list
The Reds activated Young (back) from the 60-day injured list Tuesday. Young is finally ready for his season debut after recovering from low back disc degeneration. The left-handed reliever allowed just one unearned run over 11 innings on his rehab assignment. Young made 63 appearances out of Cincinnati's bullpen in 2023, posting a 3.86 ERA and 50:20 K:BB in 53.2 frames.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Alex Young: Starting rehab assignment
Young (back) was sent to Triple-A Louisville on Thursday to begin a rehab assignment, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Young has been out all season while recovering from low back disc degeneration, but he's finally ready to test things out in game action. The left-handed reliever is on the 60-day injured list, so he won't be eligible to return until late May.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Alex Young: Shifts to 60-day IL
The Reds transferred Young from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Wednesday. Young has been on the shelf all season while recovering low back disc degeneration, an issue that resulted in him being shut down in mid-March during spring training. Manager David Bell recently disclosed that Young wasn't expected to be ready to make his season debut until late May, so the lefty reliever's move to the 60-day injured list won't have much effect, if any, on his recovery timeline.... Reds' Alex Young: Sidelined until late May
Reds manager David Bell said Wednesday that he anticipates Young (back) being sidelined until late May, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Young is dealing with a low back disc degeneration, an injury he came into spring training with. He then suffered a setback with the injury in mid-March. It's unclear whether the left-hander has begun a throwing program yet. Young will occupy a lefty relief role for the Reds once he's ready.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Alex Young: Moves to injured list
The Reds placed Young on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with low back disc degeneration. The left-hander has been destined to begin the campaign on the injured list after he suffered a setback with his back injury in mid-March, and that transaction is now official. It's unclear how long Young is expected to be sidelined, but he won't be eligible to be activated until the second week of April.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Alex Young: Headed to IL after setback
Young will begin the season on the injured list after having a setback with his back injury, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Young made his spring debut earlier this week but didn't retire a single batter while allowing five earned runs. As it turns out, he was still probably compromised physically and an IL stint is in the offing. It's not clear how long Young will be out, but the Reds moved quickly to replace him in the bullpen by signing Justin Wilson on Friday.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Alex Young: Hit hard in spring debut
Young (back) failed to retire any of the seven batters he faced and was charged with six runs (five earned) on four hits and two walks during his relief appearance in Tuesday's 14-1 loss to the White Sox. Young made his Cactus League debut Tuesday after he experienced back tightness early on during his throwing progression in camp, and based on how he fared against the White Sox, he might have benefited from taking a few extra days before entering the Reds' spring pitching schedule. The Reds haven't yet indicated that Young experienced a setback during his appearance, so he'll presumably try to iron out the kinks in his subsequent outings as he looks to secure a spot in the team's Opening Day bullpen. Young nabbed four wins, one save and 13 holds while pitching to a 3.86 ERA over 53.2 innings out of the Cincinnati bullpen in 2023.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Alex Young: Sidelined through weekend
Young (back) is expected to be sidelined for a few days, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. Young came out of a throwing session Wednesday with back tightness, but it appears to be a minor issue. The southpaw is expected to open 2024 in Cincinnati's bullpen.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Alex Young: Nursing back issue
Young is set to be evaluated after feeling back tightness during a throwing session Wednesday, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. It doesn't seem to be a major concern at this point, but Young will be examined before being cleared to resume his throwing program. The left-hander collected a a 3.86 ERA and 50:20 K:BB across 53.2 frames for Cincinnati in 2023 and, assuming health, will open 2024 in its bullpen.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Alex Young: Avoids arbitration with Cincinnati
The Reds and Young avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $1.16 million contract Thursday, Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports. Young was eligible for salary arbitration for the first time. The left-hander had a nice showing in 2023 in a full-time relief role in Cincinnati, posting a 3.86 ERA and 50:20 K:BB across 53.2 frames.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Alex Young: Back from COVID-19 IL
Young (illness) was activated from the COVID-19-related injured list Monday. Young was initially shelved in late August with a hamstring injury before being shifted to the COVID-19-related IL on Sept. 9. The southpaw has pitched well for the Reds this season when healthy, posting a 3.31 ERA and 45:19 K:BB through 49 innings.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Alex Young: Starts rehab assignment
Young (COVID-19) has been sent to Triple-A Louisville to begin a rehab assignment, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Young was one of several Reds players to go on the COVID-19 injured list recently, but he has now been cleared for game action. He shouldn't need a lengthy rehab stint considering he's been out just under a week.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Alex Young: Moves to COVID-19 IL
The Reds transferred Young (hamstring) to the COVID-19 injured list Saturday (retroactive to Friday). Young, who has been on the injured list since late August with left hamstring tightness, threw a scoreless inning in a rehab appearance with Triple-A Louisville on Wednesday. However, Young's move to the COVID-19 list pushes his return back indefinitely.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Alex Young: Begins rehab assignment
Young (hamstring) is set to begin a rehab assignment Wednesday with Triple-A Louisville. Young landed on the 15-day injured list Aug. 26 due to left hamstring tightness, but the 29-year-old southpaw appears on track to be activated when first eligible this weekend. He's delivered a solid 3.31 ERA and 45:19 K:BB through 49 innings of relief for the Reds in 2023.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Alex Young: Lands on IL
The Reds placed Young on the 15-day injured list Saturday with left hamstring tightness. Young has already missed a bit of time this month due to a back injury, but now a hamstring issue will force him onto the injured list. He'll be sidelined for the next two weeks, and his roster spot will be filled by Ben Lively, who was activated from the injured list Saturday.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Alex Young: Pulled from appearance with injury
Young was removed in the eighth inning of Sunday's game against the Nationals with an apparent injury, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. Young entered the contest in the top of the eighth and was expected to work for the entire inning, but he was pulled from the contest after issuing a leadoff walk and then striking out a batter. He appeared to suffer an injury on his final pitch of the day, but the Reds haven't provided a diagnosis yet.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Alex Young: Rescues Reds
Young allowed one hit and struck out one over one inning to earn a hold in Friday's 6-5 win over the Dodgers. Situations don't get much more high leverage than the seventh-inning spot in which manager David Bell called for the left-handed Young. The Dodgers had plated three runs, cutting Cincinnati's lead to 6-5, and the bases were loaded with lefty-hitting Max Muncy due up. Young induced a flyout, then got two more outs in the eighth before closer Alexis Diaz finished it off. The only lefty in the Reds' bullpen, Young has not allowed a run over his last 14 appearances and sports a 2.20 ERA for the season. The 29-year-old journeyman reliever has embraced a new changeup grip this season, per Charlie Goldsmith of the Cincinnati Enquirer, which helped make him a trusted bullpen arm. That's the pitch he throws most often at 37.5 percent, and opponents are batting just .159 against it.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Alex Young: Scoreless stretch continues
Young retired the lone batter faced in Wednesday's 3-0 loss to the Brewers. Young finished off the seventh inning after starter Ben Lively ceded a two-run home run to Tyrone Taylor. Finishing off innings is Young's job, and he's been executing well of late. The left-hander has not allowed a run in 13 outings (8.2 innings), and owns a 1.50 ERA over the last 32 appearances (24 innings). For the season, Young has a 2.25 ERA with 38 strikeouts and 15 walks over 40 innings.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Alex Young: Earns first save of season
Young picked up the save in Sunday's 9-7 victory over the Astros, allowing one unearned run on one hit over one inning. He struck out one and didn't record a walk. Young got the call in the bottom of the 10th after the Reds struck for three runs in the top half of the inning. It was a surprising decision, given Young hasn't been a late-inning option this season, but the top guys in the Reds' bullpen were presumably unavailable after pitching numerous times during Cincinnati's recent win streak. Overall, Young has been solid, posting a 2.83 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 31:9 K:BB across 30 appearances (28.2 innings), but fantasy managers shouldn't expect him to get regular save chances moving forward....
