In a corresponding move, the Panthers signed wideout Ventell Bryant to fill Gibson's spot on the practice squad. The West Virginia hasn't suited up for an NFL game since making 15 appearances for the Eagles during 2018.

Carolina elected to bring in Gibson on Nov. 2, adding him to the team's practice squad after Washington cut ties with the 26-year-old Sept. 17. Gibson has made all 20 of his regular-season appearances as a member of the Eagles, with his last game played being Philadelphia's 17-9 wild-card loss to Seattle on Jan. 5. The West Virginia product will now seek NFL opportunity elsewhere following a short stint in Carolina.

Gibson was able to watch practices from the sideline during the Eagles' recent minicamp according to Zangaro, who believes the 24-year-old will be healthy and ready by the time training camp rolls around. He'll need every edge he can get then, as he faces steep competition for a roster spot where either he or Mack Hollins is at best fifth on Philadelphia's wide-receiver depth chart. Gibson, the West Virginia product, has an advantage over his competition though, that being special-teams ability, which allowed him to log time on the field in all but one game last season.

Eagles' Shelton Gibson: Faces tough path to roster spot
Gibson faces added competition for a roster spot after the Eagles signed former AAF wideouts Charles Johnson and Greg Ward, Zack Rosenblatt of NJ.com reports.
Ward is a familiar face who spent most of 2017 on Philadelphia's practice squad, while Johnson has no history with the organization but led the AAF in catches and receiving yards. A 2017 fifth-round pick, Gibson was active for 15 games in 2018, playing 151 snaps on special teams and just 64 on offense. He'll compete with Johnson, Ward, Mack Hollins (groin), Braxton Miller and a few other players for what likely will be two or three roster spots. Alshon Jeffery (ribs), DeSean Jackson (Achilles) and Nelson Agholor are locked in atop the Eagles' depth chart at wide receiver.
