Fernandez allowed a run on two hits over one inning to earn the save in Wednesday's 5-4 win over the Orioles. He did not walk or strike out a batter. Fernandez allowed a run on a sacrifice fly in the ninth inning, but a baserunning blunder by the Orioles' Cedric Mullins took the tying run off base. The save was Fernandez's first of his career, and he got the opportunity because most of the Cardinals' high-leverage relievers, including closer Ryan Helsley, pitched earlier Wednesday to finish off Tuesday's suspended game. The rookie right-hander has done alright in a low-leverage role with a 3.48 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 24:7 K:BB over 20.2 innings while adding one hold and an 0-1 record. Fernandez has struggled a little lately with four runs allowed over his last 3.1 innings.... See More ... See Less

Cardinals' Ryan Fernandez: Takes extra-inning loss
Fernandez (0-1) allowed an unearned run on two hits in one inning, taking the extra-inning loss versus the White Sox on Saturday. Fernandez gave up an RBI single to Tommy Pham, and that ended up being the difference in Saturday's contest. Over his last five outings, Fernandez has covered 6.2 innings and allowed two runs (one earned) with a 9:2 K:BB. He's been used as a low-leverage reliever so far, but the rookie right-hander has been solid with a 2.70 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 17:5 K:BB over 13.1 innings in that role.... See More ... See Less -
Cardinals' Ryan Fernandez: Earns bullpen spot
Fernandez appears to have won a spot on the Cardinals' Opening Day roster after the team optioned John King to Triple-A Memphis on Wednesday, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. A Rule 5 pick in December, Fernandez posted a 3.72 ERA with six strikeouts and one walk across 9.2 innings in Grapefruit League play. The right-hander generated a bloated 6.46 ERA across 30.2 innings with Triple-A Worcester in 2023, but the Cardinals apparently saw enough this spring to invest a roster spot in him and thereby prevent Fernandez from reverting to the Red Sox organization. He and King had been competing for the final spot in the St. Louis bullpen, but barring any outside additions ahead of Thursday's season opener versus the Dodgers, Fernandez will soon make his MLB debut.... Cardinals' Ryan Fernandez: Making good impression
Fernandez has allowed one run on four hits and a walk while striking out five over five innings in Grapefruit League play. Fernandez was acquired by the Cardinals in the Rule 5 Draft in December. He will need to be on the major-league roster for all of the 2024 campaign -- if not, he must be offered back to the Red Sox. Given his work in spring, the Cardinals may be able to find a role for the 25-year-old right-hander. There are still a lot of options for middle-relief roles, but Fernandez's good first impression may help him stick with St. Louis.... See More ... See Less
