Nationals' Ronald Herrera: Back with Nats on minor-league pact
Herrera re-signed with the Nationals on a minor-league contract Dec. 1.
After electing free agency in November, Herrera was on the open market for three weeks before determining that his best option was returning to the Nationals organization for a second season. The 27-year-old right-hander previously had a cup of coffee in the majors with the Yankees in 2017, but he's otherwise spent the past five seasons in the minors. He tossed 129 innings at Double-A Harrisburg in 2022, logging a 4.40 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 114:34 K:BB.

Nationals' Ronald Herrera: Lands with Nats
Herrera signed a minor-league contract with the Nationals on Feb. 9.
The 26-year-old right-hander will be making his return to affiliated ball in 2022 after he pitched in the independent Frontier League last season with the New Jersey Jackals. Herrera's lone big-league action came in 2017, when he made two relief appearances for the Yankees. He's expected to open the upcoming season at Double-A Harrisburg.

Rangers' Ronald Herrera: Sidelined with groin strain
Herrera was placed on the 7-day injured list Friday at Triple-A Nashville due to a groin strain, Levi Weaver of The Athletic reports.
Herrera was sidelined for the entire 2018 campaign while dealing with shoulder trouble, but it's a different injury that has him unavailable to begin the current season. The 23-year-old right-hander will likely have his innings count monitored carefully once he's cleared to pitch again.

Herrera (shoulder) hasn't progressed beyond throwing off flat ground at extended spring training, T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com reports.
The right-hander was placed on the 60-day disabled list before camp ended in March and will likely be sidelined until at least July while he continues to build up strength in his right shoulder. Herrera has made just two big-league appearances in his career, so it's expected that he'll be optioned to Triple-A Round Rock or Double-A Frisco once he's activated.

Herrera was hoping to receive medical clearance to begin a throwing program this week, but his shoulder apparently didn't check out as planned. Herrera was traded to the Rangers on Monday for Reiver Sanmartin, and was added to the 40-man roster.
This is the deadline for teams to add players to their 40-man roster as protection from the Rule 5 draft, and the Yankees obviously wanted to use Herrera's spot for another player, so they got what they could for him. He is 22 and made two starts at Triple-A last season, so he could offer pitching depth for Texas at some point in 2018, likely working in a swing man role. Herrera has a 3.26 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 200 strikeouts in 231.2 innings at Double-A. Look for him to report to Triple-A Round Rock.

Herrera was sent back to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Friday, Brendan Kuty of NJ.com reports.
Herrera made just one appearance with the Yankees before being shuttled back to the minors, where he'll likely continue to develop as a starter. He could be back with the big club soon if he continues to dominate in the minors. Bryan Mitchell was recalled from Triple-A in a corresponding roster move.

The young right-hander has absolutely dominated at Double-A Trenton this season, posting a 1.13 ERA and 0.82 WHIP over nine starts, and he was recently promoted to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He'll get another shot in the big leagues after making his major-league debut in a relief appearance for the Yankees earlier this season, allowing two earned runs over two innings in a loss to the Angels. Look for Herrera to be used in low-leverage situations out of the bullpen as he acclimates to professional hitters.

Herrera was recalled from Double-A Trenton on Wednesday.
Herrera was dominating Double-A before being promoted to the Yankees, as the 22-year-old worked a 1.07 ERA and 0.76 WHIP to a 7-0 record through 50.1 innings (eight starts). He's worked almost exclusively as a starter in the minors, so it's unclear how the big club intend to use him upon his arrival. He could possibly earn a spot start for the injured CC Sabathia or even be used out of the bullpen after Yankees relievers logged seven innings in Tuesday's extra-innings loss.

Herrera was optioned to Double-A Trenton on Thursday.
He was recalled Wednesday to add some bullpen depth during the Yankees west coast swing, but a tough outing against the Angels earned him a trip back to Trenton. Herrera allowed a home run and two earned runs over 2.0 innings against the Halos while fanning two batters. He'll likely rejoin the rotation down at Trenton upon his return.

The 22-year-old was sidelined since spring training due to a bout of shoulder inflammation, but Sunday's outing seems to indicate that there aren't any lingering effects of that ailment.
