Baez (illness) was promoted from High-A Lakeland to Double-A Erie on Saturday.
Triple-A Toledo placed Baez on its 7-day injured list earlier this month due to an illness, but the right-hander seems to be back to full strength now. He made two appearances at Lakeland over the past week in what was essentially a rehab assignment, covering three innings between those outings. Baez will likely continue pitching out of the Erie bullpen for the time being before eventually earning another look at the Triple-A level if his performance warrants a move up the minor-league ladder.

Baez (illness) is expected to begin a rehab assignment at High-A Lakeland on Sunday, Emily Waldon of The Athletic reports.
Baez has been stuck on the 7-day injured list at Triple-A Toledo since early June with what was described as a "minor illness," but his month-plus absence suggests his ailment was more significant than the Tigers may have let on. In any case, Baez's impending rehab outing suggests he'll trending in the right direction health-wise. He'll likely make at least a couple appearances in the lower rungs of the minors before slotting back into the Toledo bullpen.

Baez was optioned to Triple-A Toledo on Friday.
Baez appeared in five games thus far in spring and allowed four runs on six hits and two walks across five innings. The 25-year-old made his debut last June and spent all of September in the majors as he posted a 5.02 ERA and 1.47 WHIP over 14.1 innings. Baez will have to work his way back to the majors if he is to become a factor in the Tigers' bullpen.

Tigers' Sandy Baez: Extends scoreless streak in loss
Baez tossed 2.1 scoreless innings in Wednesday's loss to the Astros, and he's now gone three appearances (5.1 innings) without allowing a run since being promoted to the majors Sept. 1.
Baez also tossed 4.1 scoreless innings in his MLB debut June 4, so he's been unblemished in 9.2 major-league innings to date. The 24-year-old has certainly been a bit of a surprise, as his 5.64 ERA and 1.55 WHIP in 103.2 innings with Double-A Erie this year didn't indicate that any success might be coming at a higher level. Nonetheless, Baez could earn himself a more permanent spot in the Tigers' bullpen heading into 2019 if he continues to excel in the final weeks of the 2018 season.

Baez will transition to a relief role with Double-A Erie on Thursday, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
It was always expected that Baez would eventually make the shift to the bullpen, and Detroit's vice president of player development David Littlefield -- with the stamp of approval from general manager Al Avila -- elected to slide him out of the rotation in hopes that the 24-year-old will be ready to join the big-league team later this year in a full-time capacity. Across 15 starts with Erie, he's posted a 5.31 ERA and 1.47 WHIP with 64 strikeouts in 76.1 innings. He made a long-relief appearance with the Tigers while serving as the club's 26th man during a doubleheader with the Yankees on June 4, during which he logged 4.1 scoreless innings. Baez will look to get comfortable in a role that he worked at in spring training.

Baez will work out of the bullpen for the Tigers during the team's doubleheader Monday against the Yankees, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
After Baez revealed earlier Sunday that he would be promoted from Double-A Erie in advance of the doubleheader, it was widely assumed that he would start one of the two games. That won't be the case, however, as the Tigers will bring up Drew VerHagen from Triple-A Toledo to start Game 1, while Mike Fiers takes the hill for Game 2. Baez, meanwhile, will provide length out of the bullpen in the event either VerHagen or Fiers fails to work deep into his respective start. Since Baez will serve as the 26th man in the twin bill, it's likely that he'll be optioned back to Erie following the second game.

The Tigers have a temporary opening in the rotation after Ryan Carpenter (oblique) landed on the disabled list a few days ago, and it appears Baez has been tabbed to fill the void.
