Top Elieser Hernandez News

  • Dodgers' Elieser Hernandez: DFA'd by Dodgers

The Dodgers designated Hernandez for assignment Friday, Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times reports.

The 29-year-old will be pushed off the Dodgers' roster in order to make room for Evan Phillips (hamstring), who was reinstated from the IL in a corresponding move. Hernandez struggled after joining the big-league club May 15, allowing nine earned runs in just 9.2 innings of work. Despite his problems in the majors, other teams may be willing to take a chance on him based on his 2.83 ERA and 1.06 WHIP at Triple-A.

  • Dodgers' Elieser Hernandez: Works in relief Monday

Hernandez gave up two earned runs on two hits over an inning of relief in Monday's 6-4 win over the Diamondbacks.

After being called up from Triple-A Oklahoma City on Wednesday, Hernandez ended up starting in the Dodgers' series finale in San Francisco, covering six innings while giving up three earned runs in a losing effort. With an off day coming up Thursday, the Dodgers weren't in need of an additional starter this week, so Hernandez shifted to the bullpen. He'll likely work mostly in lower-leverage spots while he remains up with the Dodgers.

  • Dodgers' Elieser Hernandez: Promoted, starting Wednesday

The Dodgers selected Hernandez's contract from Triple-A Oklahoma City, and he's starting Wednesday's game against the Giants, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.

The right-hander signed with the Dodgers as a non-roster invitee during the offseason and will now receive his first look with the big-league club. Hernandez has covered at least five frames in each of his previous five starts at Triple-A and posted a 2.45 ERA during that stretch, but he may not last that long Wednesday with Los Angeles expected to have a bullpen game. Ryan Yarbrough and Eduardo Salazar -- who also was promoted Wednesday -- are also in the mix to see bulk innings.

  • Dodgers' Elieser Hernandez: Takes loss in quality start

Hernandez (0-1) was the pitcher of record in Wednesday's 4-1 loss to the Giants, covering six innings and striking out three while allowing three earned runs on four hits and one walk.

After being called up from Triple-A Oklahoma City earlier in the day, Hernandez held his own in his first start with the Dodgers, retiring seven of the first nine batters he faced before being tagged for two runs on a Mike Yastrzemski home run in the bottom of the third. The right-hander would allow another run on a Heliot Ramos double in the sixth but was still able to get through the frame and log a quality start in his debut. Hernandez produced 10 swinging strikes on the night and certainly made a case for more innings at the big-league level, though manager Dave Roberts said after the game that the right-hander will serve as a long-relief option out of the bullpen in the near term, per David Vassegh of AM 570 LA Sports.

  • Dodgers' Elieser Hernandez: Doesn't make Opening Day roster

The Dodgers have reassigned Hernandez to minor-league camp, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports.

Hernandez signed a minor-league deal with Los Angeles in January and pitched in four Cactus League contests. He struggled during his time on the mound this spring, giving up seven runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out four batters over 3.2 innings. Hernandez has had some success as a major-league starter in the past -- most notably in 2020 with Miami, when he posted a 3.16 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 34:5 K:BB over 25.2 frames -- but he was injured almost all of last year and logged only 9.1 minor-league innings. He'll presumably open the coming campaign in Triple-A and work toward trying to prove both his health and effectiveness.

  • Dodgers' Elieser Hernandez: Receives NRI from Dodgers

Hernandez signed a minor-league contract with the Dodgers on Wednesday that includes an invitation to spring training, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.

Hernandez was limited to just 9.1 innings in the minors in 2023 due to a pectoral injury, but it appears he's recovered from that issue. The 28-year-old right-hander holds a 5.04 ERA and 277:94 K:BB over 287.2 innings covering parts of five seasons at the major-league level. Hernandez seems likely to begin 2024 in Triple-A Oklahoma City's rotation.

  • Elieser Hernandez: Becomes free agent

Hernandez elected to become a free agent Monday, Abbey Mastracco of the New York Daily News reports.

The Mets attempted to outright Hernandez to their Triple-A affiliate in Syracuse, but the pitcher has refused the assignment and will instead test out free agency. He ended the season on the injured list with a pectoral injury and it's not clear what his current health situation is.

  • Mets' Elieser Hernandez: Waived by Mets

The Mets placed Hernandez (pectoral) on outright waivers Thursday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

Shoulder and pectoral injuries prevented Hernandez from playing in the majors in 2023, and he'll now lose his spot on the Mets' 40-man roster. He'll have the option to elect free agency and could draw interest from other teams despite his injury history.

  • Mets' Elieser Hernandez: Shifts to 60-day IL

Hernandez (pectoral) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Sunday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

Hernandez landed on the injured list with a pectoral injury in late July, and he'll now be unable to return to action until at least late September. Since the Mets are out of contention in 2023, it wouldn't be surprising to see him simply shut down for the remainder of the year.

  • Mets' Elieser Hernandez: Placed on 15-day IL

The Mets placed Hernandez on the 15-day injured list Tuesday with a right pectoral strain, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports.

Hernandez was just recalled from Triple-A Syracuse on Monday and did not make an appearance with the Mets before being diagnosed with this pectoral strain. He battled shoulder trouble throughout the first half of the season and has logged only 9.1 total innings this year, all in the minors.

  • Mets' Elieser Hernandez: Joining big club

The Mets recalled Hernandez from Triple-A Syracuse on Monday.

New York already has a full 26-man active roster, so the team will need to make a corresponding transaction ahead of Tuesday's game against the Yankees to facilitate the addition of Hernandez. The 28-year-old right-hander will likely settle into a low-leverage role out of the Mets bullpen after turning in a 2.89 ERA and 1.39 WHIP while striking out 12 over 9.1 innings at Triple-A.

  • Mets' Elieser Hernandez: Activated and optioned

Hernandez (shoulder/side) was activated from the 60-day injured list and optioned to Triple-A Syracuse on Monday, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports.

Hernandez is back to full health again after he had spent the entire season on the IL, first while recovering from a shoulder injury before he had his rehab program slowed by side discomfort in June. The Mets don't have an opening for Hernandez in the big-league bullpen at the moment, so while he'll reclaim his spot on the 40-man roster now that he's been activated, he'll head to Triple-A to continue building his case for a promotion. During his rehab assignment, Hernandez posted a 2.45 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 10:1 K:BB over 7.1 innings across six appearances between High-A Brooklyn and Single-A St. Lucie.

  • Mets' Elieser Hernandez: Resumes rehab

Hernandez (shoulder) worked one inning for High-A Brooklyn on Sunday, giving up a hit and striking out two in a scoreless frame.

The right-hander had his rehab assignment paused at the beginning of June due to side discomfort, but he's beginning to ramp up again. Hernandez is likely to join the Mets bullpen when he gets healthy and won't need to get fully stretched out, so he could come off the IL before the All-Star break.

  • Mets' Elieser Hernandez: Dealing with side injury

Hernandez (shoulder) was removed from a June 4 rehab appearance with Single-A St. Lucie due to side discomfort, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

Hernandez has been out all season with a shoulder injury, and while he appears to be over that issue, he now has a new issue to deal with. The pitcher was able to throw off flat ground Wednesday, but a timetable for his return to game action is unclear.

  • Mets' Elieser Hernandez: Rehabbing in Florida State League

Hernandez (shoulder) made the third appearance of his rehab assignment with Single-A St. Lucie on Sunday, striking out one while allowing no hits and one walk over 1.1 scoreless innings.

Hernandez, who has resided on the injured list all season with a right shoulder strain, has now made three rehab appearances in the Florida State League, recording no more than four outs and throwing no more than 20 pitches in any of those outings. The 28-year-old's light usage would seem to suggest that the Mets envision him filling in a relief role once he's activated from the 60-day IL, even though Hernandez has mostly operated as a starter over parts of five seasons in the majors.

  • Mets' Elieser Hernandez: Transferred to 60-day IL

Hernandez (shoulder) was transferred from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day injured list by the Mets on Wednesday.

The 28-year-old was removed from the 40-man roster to make room for Michael Perez with Perez having his contract purchased from Triple-A Syracuse on Wednesday. Hernandez has missed the entirety of the 2023 season because of a right shoulder strain, and he isn't expected to be ready to return until the middle of the summer.

  • Mets' Elieser Hernandez: Goes on IL

The Mets placed Hernandez (shoulder) on the 15-day injured list Thursday.

Hernandez appears likely to miss the first few weeks of the season, but because he's reportedly resumed playing catch since being diagnosed with the right shoulder strain, the 27-year-old could be ready to pitch in games by late April or early May. Though the Mets had initially earmarked Hernandez for a spot in the Triple-A Syracuse rotation, he could end up getting a look in Queens sooner than anticipated with two big-league starters -- Justin Verlander (shoulder) and Jose Quintana (rib) -- already joining him on the shelf to begin the season.

  • Mets' Elieser Hernandez: Headed for IL

Hernandez is set to begin the season on the injured list due to a right shoulder strain, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

The Mets haven't confirmed the move, but expect Hernandez to be formally placed on the IL shortly before Thursday's season opener in Miami. Hernandez is already back to playing catch, per DiComo, but he has a lot of building up to do before he can become an option for the Mets. The 27-year-old is expected to spend some time in the rotation at Triple-A Syracuse whenever he returns to full health.

  • Mets' Elieser Hernandez: Likely headed to Syracuse

Hernandez is expected to begin the season at Triple-A Syracuse and remained stretched out as a starter, Abbey Mastracco of the New York Daily News reports.

"I think he's probably a little more [comfortable] from the starting standpoint, but with the ability to go into the bullpen," Mets manager Buck Showalter said Sunday. This was always the likely plan for Hernandez, and even after injuries hit the New York rotation in camp, David Peterson and Tylor Megill were viewed as the next men up. Hernandez didn't do much to force the issue this spring, posting a 7.45 ERA and 6:5 K:BB through 9.2 Grapefruit League innings.

  • Mets' Elieser Hernandez: Staying stretched out

Hernandez will get stretched out as a starter during spring training but is expected to begin the regular season in the rotation with Triple-A Syracuse, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

The Mets have five veteran starters on guaranteed contracts, which means when everyone is healthy, depth options like Hernandez will either work out of the big-league bullpen or get stashed at Syracuse. As the former Marlin has minor-league options remaining, the latter route seems more likely to begin the season. Hernandez made 10 of his 20 appearances for Miami last season as a starter, but his lack of plus stuff and difficulties keeping the ball in the park mean a long-relief role is likely his best path to a consistent spot in the majors.
