Rangers' Blake Wheeler: Cleared for contact
Wheeler (leg) has shed his non-contract jersey ahead of Game 5 against the Hurricanes on Monday, Dan Rosen of NHL.com reports.
Wheeler is practicing without the non-contact jersey for the first time, so it seems unlikely he will be available to play against Carolina on Monday immediately. Still, it's a positive sign for the veteran winger, who has been out of action since Feb. 15 versus the Canadiens. If Wheeler does get the all-clear, he figures to slot into a bottom-six role and could bump Jonny Brodsinski from the lineup.

Rangers' Kaapo Kakko: Offers helper Saturday
Kakko logged an assist in Saturday's 4-3 loss to the Hurricanes in Game 4.
Kakko set up a Will Cuylle tally in the first period. Through eight playoff outings, Kakko has two points, 12 shots on net, six hits and a plus-1 rating. The winger had just 19 points over 61 regular-season games, and his lack of steady offense is a large reason why he's been limited to a bottom-six role in the postseason.

Rangers' Igor Shesterkin: Takes first playoff loss
Shesterkin allowed four goals on 31 shots in Saturday's 4-3 loss to the Hurricanes in Game 4.
The defeat snapped Shesterkin's nine-game winning streak, which included the first seven contests of the Rangers' playoff run. He allowed three goals in the first period, and while the Rangers covered that damage, Brady Skjei's power-play tally late in the third was decisive. Shesterkin also hadn't allowed more than three goals in any of his last 14 appearances dating back to March 28. The 28-year-old has been exceptional so far, but a few bumps in the road can be expected in the postseason. Look for him to be back between the pipes on home ice in Monday's Game 5.

Chytil (illness) won't play versus Carolina in Game 4 on Saturday, according to Peter Baugh of The Athletic.
Chytil returned from a head injury Thursday, logging a shot and a hit in 12:02 of ice time en route to a 3-2 overtime victory over the Hurricanes. However, he didn't join the Rangers for Saturday's morning skate, which is what first put his status into question. Jonny Brodzinski will draw into the lineup due to Chytil's absence.

Shesterkin will start on the road against Carolina in Game 4 on Saturday, per Chip Alexander of The Raleigh News & Observer
Shesterkin will aim to earn his eighth straight victory to open the 2024 playoffs. He's posted a 2.01 GAA and a .935 save percentage across his first seven postseason wins this year. Although the Rangers have an opportunity to complete the second-round sweep of Carolina, the Hurricanes have kept things close, forcing the last two contests to go to overtime while firing a combined 104 shots on Shesterkin over that span. As a result, it wouldn't be surprising to see the 28-year-old netminder challenged often with the Hurricanes' playoff hopes on the line.

Rangers' Filip Chytil: Not skating Saturday
Chytil (illness) wasn't present at morning skate Saturday prior to Game 4 in Carolina, Vince Z. Mercogliano of USA Today reports.
Chytil played 12:02 of ice time in Game 3, marking his first appearance since early November as he returned from a head injury. There's a chance the Rangers hold the 24-year-old center out Saturday, which would allow Matt Rempe to slot back into the lineup.

Zibanejad helped out Chris Kreider midway through the second period who evened the score at 1-1. The 31-year-old Zibanejad is on a 13-game point streak dating back to the regular season in which he's provided five goals and 20 points -- that run includes three goals and 12 points across seven playoff outings. Zibanejad figures to continue to play a critical role on the Rangers' first line and top power-play unit.

Trocheck logged a pair of assists in Thursday's 3-2 overtime victory over the Hurricanes in Game 3.
Trocheck set up Alexis Lafreniere's tally in the third period before recording the primary helper on Artemi Panarin's game-winner 1:43 into overtime. The 30-year-old Trocheck now has points in seven straight games to start the playoffs, totaling five goals and seven assists, including multi-point efforts in his last three contests.
