• Rockies' Peter Lambert: Shifting to bullpen

  Rockies manager Bud Black said Friday that Lambert will be moving out of the rotation to the bullpen, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. Lambert has started three games for the Rockies this season, giving up at least four runs in each of them. In his last outing against the Cubs on Thursday, Lambert allowed seven runs on nine hits while striking out two over three innings. The right-hander has a 7.61 ERA and 1.69 WHIP over 23.2 innings this season. Southpaw Ty Blach could shift into the rotation for Colorado.

  Lambert (2-2) took the loss against the Giants on Wednesday, allowing seven runs on nine hits and no walks over three innings. He struck out two. Lambert went 1-2-3 through the first inning before getting lit up for six runs in the second, beginning with a leadoff homer from Michael Conforto. The right-hander would allow another run on a Blake Sabol double in the third and wouldn't return to the mound for the fourth. The seven earned runs marked a season high for Lambert, and he's now allowed at least four runs in three of his last four starts. He's still looking for his first win since April 8 against the Diamondbacks, when he was working out of the bullpen.

• Rockies' Peter Lambert: Shaky vs. Marlins

  Lambert did not factor into the decision Thursday against the Marlins, allowing four runs on five hits and three walks over 3.1 innings. He struck out three. The Marlins got to Lambert quickly, scoring twice in the opening inning before tacking on runs in the third and the fourth. The 27-year-old has struggled in his two starts this year, allowing 10 runs in 6.1 innings. He's fared better out of the bullpen, however, pitching to a 1.88 ERA over 14.1 innings in relief. Still, the right-hander figures to remain in the rotation while Kyle Freeland (elbow) is sidelined. Lambert is currently scheduled for a home start against the Giants in his next outing.

• Rockies' Peter Lambert: Picks up another start

  Lambert is scheduled to start Thursday's game in Miami. After making his first start of the season April 21 versus the Mariners, Lambert made his most recent appearance out of the bullpen, as he covered 2.2 innings in long relief on April 25 after starter Dakota Hudson was pulled from the contest midway through the fourth inning. After having off days last Friday and this past Monday, the Rockies were able to temporarily get by with a four-man rotation, but Lambert will return to starting role this week as the team returns to a five-man rotation.

• Rockies' Peter Lambert: Struggles versus Mariners

  Lambert (2-1) was tagged with the loss after he pitched three innings, allowing six runs on six hits while striking out five batters in Sunday's 10-2 defeat to the Mariners in Game 2 of their doubleheader. Lambert was able to toss a clean first inning before things got away from him in the top of the second, surrendering six runs in the frame with J.P. Crawford most notably ripping a three-run triple. The right-hander was making his first start of the season and he was unable to continue the success that he had coming out of the bullpen, watching his ERA balloon from 2.31 to 5.52 on the year. Lambert is tentatively set to pitch again next Sunday at home versus the Astros.

The 26-year-old was fighting for a rotation spot but posted a 5.40 ERA over 16.2 spring innings and lost out to Dakota Hudson and Ryan Feltner. Lambert worked as a swingman for Colorado last season with 11 starts in 25 appearances, and he should fill a similar role in 2024.

Those would be the only two runs allowed by Lambert on the afternoon as he made it through at least five innings for the third consecutive start. The right-hander has allowed at least one home run in each of his last four starts and now carries a 5.19 ERA in August. On a positive note, he's issued just one walk in each of his last three outings, striking out 15 over that stretch.
