McCarthy is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Tigers. McCarthy went 2-for-13 while starting the previous four games but will take a seat Sunday against Detroit right-hander Matt Manning. Pavin Smith will start in right field and bat sixth.... See More ... See Less

Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Idle against southpaw
McCarthy is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Tigers. The lefty-hitting McCarthy will give way to Randal Grichuk in right field Friday as Detroit trots out the left-handed Tarik Skubal. McCarthy is 2-for-15 (.133) at the plate since May 5.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Not starting Monday
McCarthy is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Reds. The lefty-hitting McCarthy will sit in the series opener Monday, despite Cincinnati bringing a right-hander in Graham Ashcraft to the hill. Pavin Smith will step in as the starting right field in place of McCarthy, who hit his first home run of the season in Sunday's 9-2 win over the Orioles.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Swats first homer of season
McCarthy went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run during Sunday's 9-2 win over the Orioles. McCarthy went homerless in his first 92 plate appearances this season before tagging Dean Kremer for a two-run shot in the sixth frame. Despite the power woes, McCarthy owns a .366 on-base percentage and has swiped three bases. He's also struck out merely three times in his last 29 plate appearances.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Taking seat Wednesday
McCarthy is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Reds. McCarthy maintains a .369 on-base percentage over 86 plate appearances this season and has seemingly moved into an everyday role in the outfield while Alek Thomas (hamstring) is on the shelf, but the 26-year-old McCarthy will hit the bench Wednesday. The Diamondbacks haven't indicated that the lefty-hitting McCarthy is dealing with an injury, but he was lifted for a pinch hitter in Tuesday's 6-2 win and is now on the bench Wednesday while the Reds bring a right-hander (Graham Ashcraft) to the hill. Pavin Smith will replace McCarthy in the Arizona outfield.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Three hits Sunday
McCarthy went 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI and three runs scored in Sunday's 11-4 win over the Padres. McCarthy had an RBI double and two singles on the evening and came around to score all three times he reached base. In 11 games since April 19, McCarthy is slashing .371/.452/.457 and has consistently been hitting leadoff for the Diamondbacks. Things may get a bit murky with Alek Thomas (hamstring) set to return to the big club this week, as it's currently unclear how manager Torey Lovullo plans to split up playing time between the two once Thomas is officially back in the fold.... Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Resting against lefty
McCarthy is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Dodgers, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports. McCarthy and fellow left-handed hitter Joc Pederson will duck out of the lineup for the series opener while the Dodgers bring southpaw James Paxton to the hill. In McCarthy's absence, Randal Grichuk will pick up a start in right field.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Back in lineup
McCarthy started in right field, batted leadoff and went 1-for-3 with a walk, a triple and an RBI in Saturday's 3-1 loss to the Mariners. McCarthy was back in the starting lineup after sitting out the previous two games and tripled home the Diamondbacks' lone run in the eighth inning. This was his first time batting atop the order, as primary leadoff hitter Ketel Marte was moved to third. With the triple, McCarthy extended his hit streak to six games, and he has gone 8-for-18 with three walks, two RBI and four runs over that period.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Collects two hits in loss
McCarthy started in left field and went 2-for-4 in Wednesday's 5-1 loss to St. Louis. McCarthy slotted in for Lourdes Gurriel, who was rested for an afternoon tilt following a night game. McCarthy has been on a roll, hitting safely in seven of eight contests at 9-for-24 (.375) with three walks, two steals, three RBI and five runs. He'll continue to make three or four starts per week until Alek Thomas (hamstring) is ready to return. The injured outfielder has begun taking batting practice and is ready to run the bases, per Theo Mackie of the Arizona Republic.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Out against lefty
McCarthy is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Cubs. The lefty-hitting McCarthy will retreat to the bench for the series finale with southpaw Jordan Wicks toeing the rubber for Chicago. Randal Grichuk will replace McCarthy in right field.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Swipes first bag of season
McCarthy went 2-for-3 with an RBI double, a stolen base and a run scored in Sunday's 5-0 win over the Cardinals. McCarthy was involved in a five-run fifth inning for the Diamondbacks, doubling home Joc Pederson before eventually scoring on a base hit from Corbin Carroll. McCarthy wound up reaching on a two-out base knock the following frame and stole second before the inning concluded for his first theft of the year. The 26-year-old is known for his elite base stealing, so it was encouraging to finally see him active on the basepaths after tallying 49 steals in 198 games over the last two seasons. McCarthy is now slashing .276/.300/.379 with four RBI, four runs and a 1:9 BB:K in 30 plate appearances this year.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Sits versus lefty
McCarthy is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rockies. Arizona is facing a left-handed starting pitcher (Austin Gomber) for the sixth time in eight games, so the lefty-hitting McCarthy once again finds himself on the bench. McCarthy and the right-handed-hitting Randal Grichuk are expected to form a platoon in right field until Arizona gets Alek Thomas (hamstring) back from the injured list.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Held out of starting lineup
McCarthy served as a pinch hitter and went 0-for-1 in Sunday's 5-2 loss to Atlanta. McCarthy had started recently against left-handers, but he was held out Sunday against Atlanta's Chris Sale. That's because the righty-hitting Randal Grichuk was activated from the injured list Friday, and he'll get starts against lefties. Expect McCarthy and Grichuk to platoon in right field until Alek Thomas (hamstring) is ready to return. At that point, Grichuk will likely platoon with Thomas, squeezing McCarthy's playing time.... Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Two hits, two RBI in loss
McCarthy started in right field and went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored in Saturday's 9-8 loss to Atlanta. McCarthy got the start against a lefty and delivered early with an RBI single in the first inning when the Diamondbacks plated six runs. He later delivered another run with a double. Now that Randal Grichuk is off the injured list, McCarthy's opportunities against left-handers may dry up. Grichuk made his season debut Saturday but served as the designated hitter in what was likely a soft re-entry before he gets work in the field. At some point, Alek Thomas (hamstring) will return, which will also cut into McCarthy's playing time.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Back in lineup Friday
McCarthy started in right field and went 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI in Friday's 6-5 extra-inning loss to Atlanta. McCarthy returned to the lineup after sitting out Wednesday's game, as Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo gets by without center fielder Alek Thomas -- Corbin Carroll started in center Friday. McCarthy should see action against right-handers while Thomas is unavailable, but the recently activated Randall Grichuk will be in the mix as well, particularly against lefties.... See More ... Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Heads to bench Wednesday
McCarthy is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Yankees. Though he went 2-for-4 in Tuesday's 7-0 win while southpaw Nestor Cortes was on the bump for the Yankees, the lefty-hitting McCarthy will retreat to the bench for the series finale while another southpaw (Carlos Rodon) takes the hill for New York. Jorge Barrosa will replace McCarthy in the outfield, but the latter is still expected to see steady playing time against right-handed pitching while Alek Thomas (hamstring) is on the injured list.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Starts in right field
McCarthy started in right field and went 2-for-4 in Tuesday's 7-0 win over the Yankees. McCarthy was also picked off/caught stealing in the sixth inning. It was the second consecutive start for McCarthy, as the Diamondbacks navigate an injury to Alek Thomas (hamstring). That the start came against a left-hander (Nestor Cortes) is notable, but Corbin Carroll getting his first night off of the season may have played a role in that decision. McCarthy and Jorge Barrosa, who started in center field Tuesday, are expected to get opportunities while Thomas is sidelined.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Scores run in loss
McCarthy started in right field and went 1-for-3 with a run scored in Monday's 5-2 loss to the Yankees. McCarthy entered the starting lineup for the injured Alek Thomas (hamstring) and scored on a Ketel Marte sacrifice fly. All three of McCarthy's plate appearances were against right-handers, and he was pinch-hit for by the switch-hitting Jorge Barrosa when southpaw Victor Gonzalez was throwing for New York. McCarthy and Barrosa could platoon while Thomas is sidelined.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Gets start Monday
McCarthy will start in right field and bat eighth in Monday's game versus the Yankees. Alek Thomas (hamstring) is banged up, so McCarthy will get his first start of the season while Corbin Carroll slides over to center. McCarthy went hitless in two plate appearances off the bench in place of Thomas in Sunday's 5-1 win over the Rockies.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: On updated projected roster
McCarthy was included on the updated projected roster compiled by Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports. McCarthy was not part of Gilbert's initial projection, but Randal Grichuk's lingering ankle injury -- he hasn't played a game yet -- could impact his availability for Opening Day. McCarthy is 8-for-32 with two doubles, a triple, three RBI and two stolen bases over 12 Cactus League contests.... See More ... See Less
