Player Outlook
The three-year, $58.5 million contract that the Astros handed to Jose Abreu last winter looked like it might have been a big mistake through about the midway point of the 2023 campaign, but he found his groove in late June and went on to post a respectable .776 OPS with 14 home runs and 57 RBI over his final 69 regular-season games. The veteran first baseman then carried that right on into the postseason, slashing .296/.354/.591 with four homers and 13 RBI in 11 playoff games as Houston pushed the eventual World Series-champion Rangers to the brink in the ALCS. Abreu is 37 years old and Father Time remains forever undefeated, but he did enough down the stretch last year to maintain a fruitful lineup spot with the reigning AL West champions in 2024. Elevated by a strong supporting cast, a lofty RBI total could again be within reach even if his individual rate stats continue to decay.

  • Astros' Jose Abreu: Collects hit in return

Abreu went 1-for-3 with an RBI on Monday against the Mariners. Abreu was back in the lineup for the first time in a month and hit eighth while playing first base. He had a rough start to the game defensively, misplaying a line drive off the bat of J.P. Crawford. However, Abreu made up for that with an RBI single in the fifth frame. The Astros seemingly plan to give Abreu regular run at first base, though he'll still need to outperform Jon Singleton unless they're willing to play Yordan Alvarez more regularly in left field at the expense of Chas McCormick.

  • Astros' Jose Abreu: Back in big leagues

The Astros recalled Abreu from Triple-A Sugar Land on Monday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. The Astros sent Abreu to the minors in late April following a disastrous .099/.156/.113 start to the season with the hope that he could rediscover his swing. He went 7-for-22 with two doubles, one home run and three RBI across five games with the Florida Complex League Astros before going hitless in two games with Sugar Land. The 37-year-old Abreu is starting at first base and batting eighth for Houston in Monday's game in Seattle.

  • Astros' Jose Abreu: Set to be called up Monday

Astros manager Joe Espada said Sunday that Abreu will be recalled from Triple-A Sugar Land on Monday, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports. Abreu was optioned to the Astros' rookie-level Florida Complex League affiliate April 30 after he produced a lowly .099/.156/.113 slash line with three RBI over 77 plate appearances to begin the season. After taking some time off to refine his plate approach, the 37-year-old resumed playing in the FCL beginning May 17 and went 7-for-22 with two doubles, one home run and three RBI across five games. Abreu then moved up to Triple-A Sugar Land this weekend, and despite a pair of hitless showings with the club, the Astros saw enough from the veteran first baseman to have him return to the big leagues. He's still likely to play second fiddle at first base to Jonathan Singleton upon being recalled, though the right-handed-hitting Abreu could end up occupying the short side of a platoon.

  • Astros' Jose Abreu: Headed to Triple-A this weekend

Astros manager Joe Espada said Wednesday that Abreu will play for the Astros' rookie-level Florida Complex League affiliate Wednesday and Thursday before joining Triple-A Sugar Land this weekend, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. The Astros previously hadn't ruled out recalling Abreu from the minors ahead of Friday's series opener in Oakland, but they've ultimately decided to keep the veteran in the FCL for a little longer before having him compete at a higher level. Espada didn't rule out Abreu rejoining the big club before the end of the weekend, although nothing official has been decided on that front. Whether Abreu will immediately reclaim his starting first base job from Jon Singleton isn't yet clear.

  • Astros' Jose Abreu: Could rejoin team Friday

Astros GM Dana Brown said Sunday that Abreu could join the team Friday in Oakland, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. The 37-year-old has gone 2-for-9 with a double and a walk in two games with the FCL Astros in the Gulf Coast League, and he's expected to play in a couple more games -- potentially with Triple-A Sugar Land -- this week before rejoining the Astros. Jon Singleton has been operating as Houston's primary first baseman over the past few weeks, and it's unclear if Abreu will immediately reclaim the job once he's called back up.

  • Astros' Jose Abreu: No timetable for return to majors

Astros manager Joe Espada said Tuesday that Abreu has "no timetable" to return to the major-league team, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. Abreu was optioned to the rookie-level Astros' Arizona Complex League affiliate last week after slashing just .099/.156/.113 in 77 plate appearances this season. He's been working on getting his swing right and is "doing very well," per Espada, although Abreu hasn't played in any official games yet. The 37-year-old will likely be assigned to a higher minor-league affiliate eventually as he works his way back to the big-league club.

  • Astros' Jose Abreu: Heading to minors

Astros general manager Dana Brown said Tuesday that Abreu is not with the MLB club and will be optioned to the Astros' rookie-level Florida Complex League affiliate Wednesday, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. The 37-year-old has struggled to a .099/.156/.113 slash line in 77 plate appearances through the first month of the season, so he'll voluntarily head to Houston's FCL affiliate in an attempt to "get some at-bats and his timing back right," per Brown. It will be the first time in the minors for Abreu, as he immediately joined the White Sox after coming up from Cuba in 2014 and has never had a minor-league rehab assignment.

  • Astros' Jose Abreu: Likely to lose playing time

Abreu is likely to lose playing time due to the promotion of Joey Loperfido, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. Abreu has had a rocky tenure with the Astros overall, and he's hitting a dreadful .099 across 77 plate appearances with a .269 OPS this season. The Astros have publicly remained hopeful that he can turn things around, though he's started only three of the team's last six games. Abreu's share of playing time is likely to only dip further, but his spot on the roster is most likely safe as he is signed through 2025 and is owed roughly $39 million for the remainder of the deal.

  • Astros' Jose Abreu: Back at first base Saturday

Abreu is starting at first base and batting eighth in Saturday's contest against the Rockies in Mexico City. Abreu has ceded the starting first base job to Jon Singleton as of late, with the former going 1-for-21 over his last seven games. Abreu will hope to turn around his poor start to the season Saturday against Rockies right-hander Cal Quantrill.

  • Astros' Jose Abreu: Hits bench again Thursday

Abreu is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Cubs. Abreu is on the bench for the third time in four games, with Jon Singleton getting the nod at first base in his place. It's clear at this point that Abreu's standing atop the depth chart is on thin ice, as the 37-year-old has followed up a disappointing 2023 campaign with an even more disastrous start to the 2024 season, as he's slashing .065/.132/.081 with a career-worst 25 percent strikeout rate across 68 plate appearances. First base/outfield prospect Joey Loperfido has gotten off to a hot start to the season at Triple-A Sugar Land and could soon be summoned to the big leagues if the Astros aren't confident in Abreu's ability to stage a turnaround and/or if Singleton proves to be a poor replacement for Abreu.

  • Astros' Jose Abreu: Steps out of lineup

Abreu is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against Atlanta, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports. Abreu is 2-for-30 over his past nine games and will head to the bench for Tuesday's contest. Jon Singleton will receive another start at first base, his third in Houston's past six games.

  • Astros' Jose Abreu: Gets breather Friday

Abreu isn't in the Astros' lineup for Friday's game against the Rangers, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. Abreu has managed just one hit in 18 at-bats across his last six games, so he'll sit down for the second time in a row Friday. Jon Singleton will take his place at first base while batting fifth.

  • Astros' Jose Abreu: Out of lineup

Abreu is not in the lineup for Thursday's contest in Kansas City, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.. Abreu has been unspeakably bad at the plate in the early going, sporting a .227 OPS and 31.7 percent strikeout rate. It's his fourth day off already this season and in his last start he batted eighth. Given Abreu's struggles last season, he could continue to see his playing time dwindle if he doesn't right the ship. Jon Singleton will handle first base Thursday.

  • Astros' Jose Abreu: Out of lineup Sunday

Abreu is out of the lineup for Sunday's matchup against the Rangers, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. Abreu will get a break Sunday as Jon Singleton will take the field at first base. The veteran infielder has seen the plate 28 times this year, slashing .077/.143/.077 with only two hits and two runs. Abreu's starting spot could be in question eventually if the offensive struggles continue, especially with Triple-A prospect Joey Loperfido pushing for his major league debut.

  • Astros' Jose Abreu: Slipping down order

Abreu has hit seventh in the Astros' lineup in consecutive games, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. Abreu has only two hits in his first 28 plate appearances of the season, and he's recently hit behind both Yainer Diaz and Chas McCormick. His slip down the order began Friday with the Astros facing a lefty, but he remained in the same position for right-hander Jon Gray on Saturday. While it's been a poor start to the season, Abreu should remain a regular in the lineup due to the limited number of alternatives Houston has at first base, unless the team opts to promote impressive prospect Joey Loperfido.

  • Astros' Jose Abreu: Retreats to bench Wednesday

Abreu is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports. Abreu was on the bench for Sunday's 4-3 loss to the Yankees due to a sore hand, but he returned to the starting nine for both of the Astros' first two games against the Blue Jays, going 2-for-8 with a run scored. The Astros haven't indicated that Abreu suffered a setback with his hand in either contest, so his absence from the lineup Wednesday may be little more than a maintenance day. Jon Singleton will spell Abreu at first base and bat sixth.

  • Astros' Jose Abreu: Returns to lineup Monday

Abreu (hand) will start at first base and bat sixth in Monday's game versus the Blue Jays, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports. Abreu was out of the lineup Sunday due to lingering soreness in his hand as a result of a hit-by-pitch Saturday, but he's feeling well enough to give it a go Monday. The veteran first baseman has yet to pick up a base hit this season.

  • Astros' Jose Abreu: Nursing sore hand

Abreu is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Yankees due to hand soreness, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. The veteran first baseman will receive a day off after being hit by a pitch on the hand during Saturday's contest, though he's expected to be available off the bench Sunday. Abreu has gone 0-for-10 through the first three games of the season, so taking a day to reset regardless of the injury could prove beneficial.

  • Astros' Jose Abreu: Not starting Sunday

Abreu is out of the lineup Sunday versus the Yankees. Abreu battled soreness in his right knee throughout spring training. He was sidelined for more than a week due to the issue and was able to ramp back up a bit before Opening Day. In his first 12 plate appearances of the season, the 37-year-old has not recorded a hit, though he has gotten aboard twice. Jon Singleton will start for him at first base Sunday while batting sixth.

  • Astros' Jose Abreu: Back in action Sunday

Abreu (knee) is batting fifth as the designated hitter in Sunday's Grapefruit League game against the Cardinals, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports. Abreu has been sidelined a bit more than a week due to right knee soreness, but he went through full workouts the past two days and is back in the lineup Sunday. The 37-year-old has plenty of time to ramp back up before Opening Day following the absence.
