Baltimore cleared room on the 26-man active roster for Stowers by optioning outfielder/first baseman Heston Kjerstad to Triple-A in a corresponding move. Stowers, 26, is joining the big club for the first time this season, but he saw action with the Orioles during the 2022 and 2023 campaigns and owns a collective .207/.267/.331 in 131 career big-league plate appearances. He'll likely serve as a depth outfielder while he's up with the Orioles and could be sent back to Triple-A once Austin Hays (calf) is ready to return from the injured list.

Baltimore has yet to make the move official, but the club could option Heston Kjerstad to Triple-A in a corresponding move. Like Kjerstad before him, Stowers isn't likely to get steady playing time, either, given the Orioles' crowded outfield situation, but getting him regular reps is probably less of a priority than it would be with Kjerstad. The Orioles optioned Stowers to Triple-A Norfolk on Friday, Matt Weyrich of The Baltimore Sun reports.
Stowers is tied for the Grapefruit League lead with seven home runs this spring, but ultimately it still wasn't enough to force his way onto the Orioles' crowded roster. The 26-year-old will be given regular playing time at Norfolk while awaiting another shot in the majors.
Stowers hit three home runs in Sunday's Grapefruit League game against the Tigers to bring his total to seven homers this spring. He is batting .275/.286/.800 through 17 exhibition games.
Stowers has minor-league options remaining and there are a number of fresh faces pushing to make the Orioles' Opening Day roster. While the power numbers this spring look good, his 1:12 BB:K is less impressive (and arguably more meaningful in a small sample). Strikeouts have been an issue for Stowers at the upper levels -- the 26-year-old has three home runs and a 31.3 percent strikeout rate in 131 major-league plate appearances to date. He's also limited defensively to the outfield corners.

Stowers is 1-for-5 in Grapefruit League play as well, with his lone hit a solo home run off Atlanta lefty Dylan Lee. Kubatko notes the Orioles' competition for outfield spots will be a challenging one -- Austin Hays, Cedric Mullins and Anthony Santander are virtual locks for starting roles. Stowers is among a group of four or five players competing for two spots at most on the Opening Day roster, so he'll need to continue to put together good at-bats, against all pitchers, to open the campaign in Baltimore.

Stowers took a pitch to the face Tuesday in Norfolk's win over Worcester. Given the timing and severity of the injury, Stowers' season could very well be over.
