Player Outlook
Brandon Lowe's 2021 season happened, but boy howdy does it look like quite the outlier against his other seasons. That season, Lowe showed what he is capable of when his body can remain healthy, something it has not done since that season. 2022 was derailed by troubles in his back, and those resurfaced in 2023, albeit in a different form. Those struggled led to him hitting .209/.307/.401 in the first half of the season with 9 homers and 31 RBIs before the rest at the break was just was the doctor ordered. Lowe went on to hit .253/.348/.484 in the second half with 12 homers and 37 RBIs before a foul ball fractured his knee cap and ended his season. Beyond his health limitations, Lowe still struggles to hit lefties (1 HR, .170) and continues to strike out below the league average rate. He has the ability to hit 30 homers, but given we have seen just one full season from him as he enters his age 29 season, this is not a player you should be reaching for in drafts.

  • Rays' Brandon Lowe: Continuing assignment Saturday

Lowe (oblique) will resume his rehab assignment Saturday at Triple-A Durham, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Lowe initially landed on the injured list April 12 with a strained right oblique, and he played four rehab games in the minors before a setback temporarily halted his assignment Sunday. Now that he's been cleared to get back on the field, the plan is for Lowe to play two more games with Durham before returning to Tampa Bay on Monday ahead of its upcoming series against the Red Sox.

  • Rays' Brandon Lowe: Should resume rehab assignment soon

Rays manager Kevin Cash said Tuesday that Lowe (oblique) will rejoin the team in Tampa Bay and will resume swinging the bat before heading back out on a minor-league rehab assignment in short order, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Cash's comments came after Lowe was pulled off his assignment with Durham when he experienced renewed soreness in his right oblique during his fourth rehab game Sunday. Lowe visited a spine surgeon Tuesday for further consultation on his injury, with Cash noting that further imaging showed the second baseman was "heading in the right direction" with his recovery. Cash said that Lowe may still have to manage some pain moving forward, but the 29-year-old at least appears to have steered clear of a major setback. If he's able to return to Durham and resume playing in games by this weekend, Lowe could be ready to come off the 10-day injured list at some point next week.

  • Rays' Brandon Lowe: Seeing specialist Tuesday

Lowe said following his rehab game Sunday with Triple-A Durham that he felt "something" in his right oblique and he will visit a specialist Tuesday in Nashville, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Lowe started at second base with Durham on Sunday, going 1-for-5 with a three-run home run and striking out three times. The 29-year-old has gone 3-for-10 with two home runs and three walks over his four rehab games and appeared to be on the cusp of a return from the 10-day injured list, but his activation will be delayed while he consults with a specialist after possibly aggravating the oblique injury. Richie Palacios and Amed Rosario are expected to continue operating in a platoon at second base until Lowe is deemed ready to join the big club.

  • Rays' Brandon Lowe: Resumes rehab stint

Lowe (oblique) is in the lineup at second base for Triple-A Durham on Sunday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Lowe began his rehab assignment Tuesday and has gone 2-for-5 with three walks, one home run and four RBI over three games. He was pulled from Durham's game Friday for precautionary reasons, but the 29-year-old is back in action Sunday. Lowe appeared in eight games for the Rays before landing on the 10-day IL on April 12.

  • Rays' Brandon Lowe: Early exit from rehab outing

Lowe (oblique) was pulled from Friday's rehab appearance with Triple-A Durham for precautionary reasons, MLB.com reports. Lowe has been on a rehab assignment since Tuesday and gone 2-for-5 with a home run across three games. It's unclear why he was pulled or if this will push back his return timeline.

  • Rays' Brandon Lowe: Starting rehab stint Tuesday

Lowe (oblique) will start his rehab assignment Tuesday with Triple-A Durham, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reported Friday. Lowe has been sidelined since April 7 with a strained right oblique but will get back into game action Tuesday. Until he rejoins the big-league club, Amed Rosario and Curtis Mead will continue filling in at second base.

  • Rays' Brandon Lowe: Takes modest step toward return

Rays manager Kevin Cash said Monday that Lowe (oblique) has started swinging a bat and fielding ground balls, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Lowe landed on the injured list April 12 with a right oblique strain but doesn't appear close to being activated, despite having been able to take part in some baseball activities. Curtis Mead and Amed Rosario will likely continue to share work at second base in Lowe's absence.

  • Rays' Brandon Lowe: Lands on IL with oblique strain

Lowe was placed on the 10-day injured list by the Rays on Friday, retroactive to April 9, with a right oblique strain, Ryan Bass of Bally Sports Sun reports. The grade of the strain has not yet been revealed, so it's unclear at this point how much time Lowe might miss. Curtis Mead has been filling for him at second base and should continue to do so most days. The Rays also recalled Niko Goodrum to take Lowe's spot on the roster, and he is an option at the keystone, as well.

  • Rays' Brandon Lowe: Sent for MRI on oblique

Lowe will undergo an MRI on his right oblique and won't be available for Wednesday's game against the Angels, Tricia Whitaker of Bally Sports Sun reports. Rays manager Kevin Cash said that it's "fair to say he will miss some time," so while Lowe hasn't yet been placed on the 10-day injured list, he seems likely to be deactivated prior to Friday's series opener versus the Giants. The MRI will determine the severity of the injury and should help provide the Rays with a rough timeline for how long Lowe might be sidelined. Lowe was out of the lineup for the Rays' past two games against left-handed pitching, but he'll be on the bench Wednesday against a right-hander (Jose Soriano) for the first time. Curtis Mead will draw a third straight start and will likely be headed for a full-time role at second base if Lowe does in fact land on the IL.

  • Rays' Brandon Lowe: Returns to lineup

Lowe (side) is starting at second base and batting second Saturday against the Rockies, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Lowe's side tightness and a left-handed Rockies starter prevented him from starting Friday's contest, but he entered the game as a pinch hitter and made three plate appearances during the loss. Now, with right-hander Ryan Feltner on the mound for Colorado, the 29-year-old infielder will return to the lineup in search of his first hit since March 29.

  • Rays' Brandon Lowe: Appears as pinch hitter

Lowe (side) went 0-for-3 Friday against the Rockies. Lowe was held out of the lineup due to the combination of side tightness and a lefty on the mound. However, he entered the game in the sixth inning as a pinch hitter after the Rockies turned to their bullpen. That's a good sign Lowe will be back in the lineup Saturday with Colorado set to send righty Ryan Feltner to the mound.

  • Rays' Brandon Lowe: Sitting out Friday

Lowe (side) is absent from Friday's lineup against the Rockies. Lowe had to leave Wednesday's game versus the Rangers due to left side tightness. With the Rockies sending lefty Austin Gomber to the mound Friday, the plan is to give Lowe a second day of rest following Thursday's off day, with the hope that he'll be ready to start Saturday. Curtis Mead will cover second base Friday.

  • Rays' Brandon Lowe: Aiming to return Saturday

Rays manager Kevin Cash said Wednesday that he's hopeful Lowe (oblique) will be ready to return to the lineup Saturday in Colorado, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Lowe exited Wednesday's 4-1 loss to the Rangers due to left side tightness, but Cash said the second baseman wanted to remain in the game. The manager hopes that the team's off day Thursday combined with a left-hander starting for the Rockies on Friday will allow Lowe sufficient rest before he can return to action Saturday. Side injuries can be tricky, though, so an eventual stint on the injured list can't be ruled out.

  • Rays' Brandon Lowe: Exits game with side tightness

Lowe was removed from Wednesday's game against the Rangers due to left side tightness, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. It's not clear when Lowe was injured, but he went 0-for-2 with a strikeout before being lifted after the fifth inning. The Rays are calling Lowe day-to-day for the time being, but the club may offer more clarity on his situation after the game.

  • Rays' Brandon Lowe: Launches grand slam Friday

Lowe went 2-for-5 with a grand slam in Friday's 8-2 win over the Blue Jays. The second baseman put Tampa Bay in the lead for good by crushing a Chris Bassitt cutter to deep right-center field in the third inning with the bases loaded. Lowe slugged 21 homers in 109 games last season while slashing .231/.328/.443, but if he can stay healthy in 2024 he's capable of a lot more, even if he's mainly limited to a strong-side platoon role for the matchup-focused Rays.

  • Rays' Brandon Lowe: Held out with illness

Lowe was held out of workouts again Tuesday due to illness, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. It's not clear exactly what Lowe is dealing with, but he should be fine to return to action later this week. The 29-year-old is slated to handle second base again for the Rays in 2024.

  • Rays' Brandon Lowe: Back at full strength

Lowe (knee) has fully recovered and doesn't expect to be limited in his winter workouts, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Lowe was placed on the 10-day injured list at the end of the 2023 campaign after suffering a fractured right patella, but the injury won't alter his offseason program much. The Maryland product should report to spring training with a clean bill of health.

  • Rays' Brandon Lowe: Diagnosed with fractured kneecap

Lowe will be sidelined 4-6 weeks after being diagnosed Friday with a fractured right kneecap, Ryan Bass of Bally Sports Suns reports. Lowe suffered the injury when he fouled a ball off his knee Thursday against the Blue Jays. He's done for the remainder of the regular season and seems doubtful to return for the postseason, even if the Rays make a run all the way to the World Series. The power-hitting second baseman finishes with a .231/.328/.443 slash line, 21 home runs and 68 RBI across 109 games.

  • Rays' Brandon Lowe: Undergoing further imaging

Lowe (knee) will undergo further testing on his right knee Friday, Ryan Bass of Bally Sports Sun reports. Lowe was reportedly walking around with a noticeable limp after injuring his knee during Thursday's win over the Angels. Isaac Paredes will start at second base Friday with Curtis Mead at third base.

  • Rays' Brandon Lowe: Exits with apparent injury

Lowe was removed from Thursday's game against the Angels with an apparent knee injury, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Lowe fouled a ball hard off his right knee in the bottom of the seventh inning, though he was able to gut it out until the top of the ninth and doesn't seem to be dealing with anything too serious. Curtis Mead entered to play third base for the Rays as Isaac Paredes shifted over to second. Lowe finished the day 0-for-2 with a walk and two strikeouts.
