  • Marlins' Jake Burger: Taking seat Tuesday

Burger is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game in Detroit.

Burger has had trouble finding his rhythm since returning from the injured list, going just 2-for-29 at the plate. He'll get a day off to reset. Tristan Gray will handle third base in Burger's stead.

  • Marlins' Otto Lopez: Homers again

Lopez went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run Monday against the Tigers.

Lopez took advantage of his third-straight start in place of Tim Anderson by collecting his fourth hit and second homer during that short stretch of games. Lopez has played 17 games this season totaling 32 at-bats, hitting .313 with three homers, six RBI, eight runs and a steal. Lopez has displayed a nice hit tool throughout his seven-year rise through the minors, topping .300 in three separate seasons, but the recent power surge is not consistent with his expected profile.

  • Marlins' Sixto Sanchez: Extends to 81 pitches

Sanchez did not factor into the decision Monday against the Tigers, allowing three runs (zero earned) on five hits and two walks over 4.2 innings. He struck out two.

An error opened the door for a three-run second that was entirely uncredited to Sanchez, who was generally effective throughout the rest of his outing. It was the 10th appearance and fourth start of the season for Sanchez, who allowed 10 earned runs over 10.2 innings during his previous three starts. Most encouraging for Sanchez is that he was able to work his way up to 81 pitches after tossing no more than 68 in any of his previous outings. He's tentatively scheduled to make his next start over the weekend at home when the Mets make the trek to Miami.

  • Marlins' A.J. Puk: Returns from injured list

The Marlins activated Puk (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list Monday.

It's been a little more than three weeks since Puk landed on the IL with left shoulder fatigue, but he's ready to return after yielding two runs with a 7:0 K:BB over 3.2 innings across his four minor-league rehab appearances. Puk struggled mightily as a member of the Miami rotation earlier this season, but he'll be used in relief in his return from the IL and should eventually see usage in high-leverage spots.

  • Marlins' Tim Anderson: Placed on IL with back injury

The Marlins placed Anderson on the 10-day injured list Monday with lower-back tightness.

Anderson had missed the previous two games with the injury and evidently didn't show enough progress to avoid a stint on the IL. Because the move is backdated to Saturday, Anderson will be eligible to return from the IL in just over a week. However, it's unclear whether he'll be ready to rejoin the Miami lineup by then. Vidal Brujan is expected to serve as the Marlins' everyday shortstop while Anderson is on the shelf.

  • Marlins' Otto Lopez: Draws third straight start

Lopez will start at second base and bat seventh in Monday's game against the Tigers.

Lopez will make his third straight start in the middle infield while Tim Anderson sits again due to lower-back tightness. The 25-year-old has swung a hot bat over his last two starts, going 3-for-6 with a home run, a double and a walk.

  • Marlins' Christian Bethancourt: Playing time picking up

Bethancourt will start at catcher and bat ninth in Monday's game against the Tigers.

Bethancourt will draw his third time in four games, with the playing time behind the dish beginning to tilt more in his favor while he's wielded a hot bat of late. Over his last four starts, Bethancourt has gone 6-for-13 at the plate, but he's still holding down a lowly .346 OPS on the season. That mark is right in line with Nick Fortes' (.345), so as soon as Bethancourt cools off, the two backstops could settle back into more of a timeshare.

  • Marlins' Nick Fortes: Sitting again Monday

Fortes is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Tigers.

Fortes will sit for the second day in a row and the third time in four games while Christian Bethancourt gets another turn behind the plate. The Marlins have gotten minimal production from both of their catchers for most of the season, but Bethancourt has shown some semblance of life at the dish of late, going 6-for-13 with two doubles over his last four games. That may be enough to give him the edge on playing time for now over Fortes, who has turned in a .345 OPS over 78 plate appearances on the season.

  • Marlins' Tim Anderson: Held out again Monday

Anderson (back) remains out of the lineup for Monday's contest against the Tigers.

Anderson is battling lower-back tightness and will miss a third straight start. The Marlins haven't indicated that a stint on the injured list might be required for Anderson, but the odds certainly increase the more time he misses. Vidal Brujan will again handle shortstop in Anderson's place while Otto Lopez covers second base.

  • Marlins' Anthony Bender: Nabs first win of season

Bender (1-2) picked up the win Sunday against the Phillies, walking two and striking out one in a scoreless 10th inning.

Both free passes the right-hander issued were at least semi-intentional, but Bender was able to get Kody Clemens to pop out with the bases loaded to end the threat. The Marlins then walked it off in the bottom of the frame to give Bender the victory. He's delivered six straight scoreless appearances and the 29-year-old right-hander does have a 20:7 K:BB through 17 innings on the season, but his 5.82 ERA and 1.71 WHIP make him tough to rely on for fantasy purposes.

  • Marlins' Jazz Chisholm: On base three times in win

Chisholm went 2-for-3 with a walk, a double, a triple, a run scored and an RBI in Sunday's extra-inning win over the Phillies.

Both extra-base hits came off Zack Wheeler, as the Marlins tagged the Phillies' ace for six runs -- the right-hander's worst start of the season. Chisholm has caught fire over the last week, producing four multi-hit performances in the last seven games and batting .370 (10-for-27) over that stretch with three doubles, a triple, a homer, three steals, three RBI and five runs.

  • Marlins' Josh Bell: Three-run homer in win

Bell went 1-for-3 with a three-run home run, two walks and two runs scored in Sunday's 7-6 extra-win over the Phillies.

Bell was able to take Zack Wheeler deep for a three-run shot in the bottom of the third inning, giving the Marlins a 4-3 lead. The long ball was his fifth of the season and second of the month. The first baseman has produced a .270 average with two home runs, eight RBI and three runs scored over 37 at-bats in 11 games in May.

  • Marlins' Braxton Garrett: Struggles in 2024 debut

Garrett pitched 5.1 innings, allowing five runs on five hits and two walks while striking out eight batters in Sunday's 7-6 extra-inning win over the Phillies. He didn't factor into the decision.

Garrett got off to a slow start in his season debut, giving up three runs in the top of the first inning on a homer by Nick Castellanos. He then tossed four scoreless frames before two more runs came around to score while he secured just one out in the top of the sixth frame. The left-hander did impress in the strikeout department though, punching out at least eight batters for the first time since June 22 of the 2023 campaign versus the Pirates. Garrett will look to produce a more well-rounded performance in his next start, which is tentatively set for Saturday at home versus the Mets.

  • Marlins' Nick Fortes: Gives way to Bethancourt on Sunday

Fortes is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Phillies.

The timeshare behind the plate continues for the Marlins, as neither Fortes nor Christian Bethancourt has performed well enough to gain separation from one another in the job battle. The two have now alternated turns behind the plate over the past eight games, with Bethancourt getting the nod Sunday.

  • Marlins' Tim Anderson: Out again Sunday

Anderson (back) is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Phillies.

He'll be on the bench for a second straight game and remains day-to-day with lower-back tightness. Vidal Brujan will move over from second base to replace Anderson at shortstop.

  • Marlins' Tristan Gray: Called up from Triple-A

The Marlins selected Gray's contract from Triple-A Jacksonville on Sunday.

Gray slashed .227/.301/.523 with 10 home runs and 23 RBI over 143 plate appearances prior to getting his first big-league call-up of 2024. He made his MLB debut with the Rays in 2023, going 2-for-5 with a solo home run over two games. He's played all four infield spots in the minors this season for Jacksonville and will likely serve as a utility player for Miami while he's with the big club.
