Player Outlook
Shea Langeliers opened the season as the Athletics primary catcher. He gathered a taste of the majors down the stretch in 2022 but struggled making contact. In his first full season, Langeliers lowered his strikeout rate to a still elevated 29.2 percent while hitting the ball with more authority. However, as a fly ball hitter in the cavernous Coliseum, Langeliers' BABIP was well below average, but his 22 homers was fifth most among catcher-eligible hitters and his 63 RBI tied for 12th highest. Langeliers is still a work in progress behind the plate as his -13 defensive runs saved was the third worst in the league and he graded as one of the poorest pitch framers. Langeliers' 31 percent success rate catching base stealers was one of the best marks in the league. Langeliers will share catching duties with Tyler Soderstrom, with Langeliers likely to get the heavier workload. The volume will generate mixed league worthy counting stats, but Langeliers is a batting average liability.

The blast was Langeliers' 11th of the season, and with 20 of his 34 hits now having gone for extra bases, the backstop boasts a .491 slugging percentage that helps make up for his paltry .214 average and .281 on-base percentage.

Langeliers went 0-for-2 with two walks and a stolen base in a win over the Rockies on Tuesday. The slugging backstop got it done a bit differently Tuesday, with Langeliers showing some solid plate discipline while recording his second multi-walk effort of the season, both which have come within the last week. Langeliers' steal was also his first of the campaign, and with the pair of free passes, he's now reached safely in six consecutive games.

Langeliers went 1-for-2 with a two-run home run and two walks in a loss to the Royals on Friday. It was such a miserable offensive night for the Athletics that Langeliers' 421-foot blast came with Oakland just one out away from being shut out. The backstop is hitting a stellar .368 (14-for-38) with four home runs and 13 RBI across his last 11 contests.

  • Athletics' Shea Langeliers: Sets record in twin bill

Langeliers went 5-for-9 with a double, a triple, two home runs, a third run scored and eight RBI across both games of Wednesday's doubleheader split with the Rangers. The 26-year-old backstop fell a single short of a cycle in the matinee while driving in five runs, and Langeliers then launched his second long ball of the day in the second inning of the nightcap off Jack Leiter. Langeliers' eight RBI were the most ever by an Oakland player in a doubleheader, breaking the record of seven set by Reggie Jackson in 1969. Langeliers has produced multiple hits with a homer in three of his last four games, but the surge has only brought his batting average up to .209 (24-for-115). He is supplying some big-time power, however. Through 34 contests, he's slugged nine homers with 24 RBI.

  • Athletics' Shea Langeliers: Getting maintenance day

Langeliers is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Marlins. Langeliers was probably overdue for a day off, as he had started at catcher or served as a designated hitter in each of Oakland's last five games. Kyle McCann will get a turn behind the plate in Sunday's series finale.

  • Athletics' Shea Langeliers: Productive in win

Langeliers went 1-for-2 with an RBI sacrifice fly, a double and a walk in a win over the Pirates on Monday. The struggling backstop experienced a rare taste of offensive success in Oakland's fourth win in the last five games. Langeliers is still sitting on a forgettable .172 average and .227 on-base percentage across 97 plate appearances. However, eight of his 15 hits have gone for extra bases and he has an acceptable 21.6 percent strikeout rate, offering some support for the notion that he'll be due for a turnaround once his atypically low .143 BABIP sees a boost.

  • Athletics' Shea Langeliers: Belts fifth homer

Langeliers went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 4-3 loss to the Yankees. Marcus Stroman left a breaking ball up in the strike zone in the second inning, and Langeliers launched it 414 feet to right-center field. It was the catcher's first long ball since his three-homer performance April 9 against the Rangers -- in the 11 games between those power displays, he went just 3-for-33 (.091) with a double as his only extra-base hit. On the season, Langeliers is slashing .174/.234/.406 through 77 plate appearances with five home runs and 11 RBI.

Langeliers put together a night to remembe, taking Nathan Eovaldi yard in the second inning before blasts in the seventh and ninth off relievers David Robertson and Jose Leclerc, respectively. It was Langeliers' first-career three-homer performance and just the third time he's ever hit multiple home runs. Langeliers came into Tuesday with just five hits on the season and is now up to a .250 average with four long balls and seven RBI.

  • Athletics' Shea Langeliers: Solid start to season

Langeliers went 3-for-6 with a hit-by-pitch and a sacrifice fly over his last two games against the Guardians on Friday and Sunday. The starting catcher started the season with an 0-for-3 showing on Opening Day before rapping out a pair of singles Friday, then getting on base two more times via another hit and the plunking Sunday in his return from a day off. Langeliers flashed some promising power a season ago with 22 home runs and 45 extra-base hits overall, and he also managed to lace seven (four doubles, one triple, two homers) of his 11 Cactus League hits for extra bases this spring.

  • Athletics' Shea Langeliers: On base twice in spring win

Langeliers went 1-for-2 with a walk in a Cactus League win over the Rangers on Sunday. He was also caught stealing on his only attempt. The 26-year-old backstop came into the game with just one single across his first 11 spring plate appearances, so Sunday's showing was actually a step up. Langeliers impressively popped 45 extra-base hits, including 22 home runs, across 135 games in 2023, but he mustered a .205 average and .268 on-base percentage in the process. A 29.2 percent strikeout rate, 48.9 percent flyball rate and .246 BABIP all had a prominent hand in the struggles, but despite the presence of Tyler Soderstrom as a left-handed option behind the dish, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com still projects Langeliers to handle the bulk of the Athletics' catching duties in 2024.

Langeliers had gone just 1-for-15 over his last five games, though he homered in three of the four games before that. The catcher's sixth-inning blast Friday put the Athletics ahead for good. He's up to 21 long balls with 60 RBI, 50 runs scored, three stolen bases, 17 doubles, four triples and a .202/.264/.407 slash line through 129 contests overall.

  • Athletics' Shea Langeliers: Laces triple in loss

Langeliers went 1-for-3 with an RBI triple, a walk and a run in a loss to the Mariners on Tuesday. Langeliers drove home the Athletics' first run of the night in the seventh inning with his timely three-bagger, which scored Aledmys Diaz. The 25-year-old has established a new personal best with four triples overall in 2023 after recording one during his first taste of the big leagues in 2022, and he's added 37 additional extra-base hits this season in the form of 17 doubles and 20 home runs. That's helped coax his slugging percentage over the .400 mark (.402), but a .202 average and .265 OBP have dragged down his slash line overall.

  • Athletics' Shea Langeliers: Sitting Saturday

Langeliers will hit the bench Saturday against the Padres. Langeliers' 20 homers tie him for fourth among all catchers, but his .206/.268/.407 slash line is only good for a modest 85 wRC+ due to his inability to get on base. Carlos Perez starts behind the plate Saturday, catching for Mason Miller.

  • Athletics' Shea Langeliers: Goes deep in victory

Langeliers went 2-for-4 with a solo home run against Houston in a 4-0 win Monday. Langeliers was the only Oakland batter to notch multiple hits in the contest, and his seventh-inning solo shot put the team up 3-0.
