Player Outlook
Almost everything pointed to Brady Singer being able to take a big step forward in 2023, but he instead regressed to the tune of a career-worst 5.52 ERA. It would be reasonable on the surface to blame the arm fatigue that plagued him in the second half or the back strain that ended his season in mid-September, but he wasn't particularly good in the first half either. Singer is still young -- this will be his age-27 campaign -- but there is some worrisome data suggesting major-league hitters might have figured him out. Largely a two-pitch, sinker-slider type of hurler, he gave up an average exit velocity of 91 mph on batted balls last year, falling into the bottom-sixth percentile of all big-league pitchers in that measurement. He generates a lot of groundballs, but Singer will have to generate even more moving forward if he can't rework his arsenal and/or add an effective third pitch.

  • Royals' Brady Singer: Short outing vs. Cleveland

Singer didn't factor into the decision Thursday against the Guardians, allowing three runs (two earned) on nine hits and a walk over 3.2 innings. He struck out two. Singer's final line could've been much worse, as he matched a season high with nine hits allowed while failing to make it through four innings. Prior to Thursday, Singer hadn't allowed more than one earned run in five of his last six outings. Overall, the 27-year-old right-hander is 4-2 on the year with a 2.76 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 66:20 K:BB across 12 starts (65.1 innings) this season. Singer's currently in line for a home matchup with the Yankees in his next start.

  • Royals' Brady Singer: Royals-Guardians postponed

Singer and the Royals won't play the Guardians on Wednesday after the game was postponed due to inclement weather in Cleveland. The Royals and Guardians will make up the postponed game as part of a split doubleheader Aug. 26 After missing his previous turn through the rotation last Thursday due to an illness, Singer was cleared to start Wednesday, but he looks like he'll have to wait until Thursday's series finale with the Guardians to make his return to the rotation.

  • Royals' Brady Singer: Cleared to start Wednesday

Singer (illness) is listed as the Royals' probable starting pitcher for Wednesday's game against the Guardians in Cleveland, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. Singer looks to be in the clear on the health front after an unspecified illness left him feeling lethargic and unable to play catch Wednesday before the Royals opted to scratch him from his scheduled start Thursday against the Twins, according to ESPN.com. He apparently demonstrated enough progress over the weekend and shouldn't face any major workload restrictions when he takes the hill Wednesday. Through 11 starts this season, Singer has gone 4-2 with a 2.63 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 64:19 across 61.2 innings.

  • Royals' Brady Singer: Eyeing Wednesday return

Royals manager Matt Quatraro said Singer (illness) is feeling better but still needs a few more days to regain strength before potentially slotting back into the rotation Wednesday in Cleveland, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. Singer was scratched ahead of his most recent scheduled start Thursday versus the Twins due to an illness, but he now appears to be on track to return to the mound relatively soon. The right-hander is in the midst of a career year with Kansas City, producing a 2.63 ERA and 1.12 WHIP with 64 strikeouts over 61.2 innings in his first 11 starts of 2024.

  • Royals' Brady Singer: Scratched from start due to illness

Singer has been scratched from Thursday's scheduled start against the Twins due to illness. Daniel Lynch was recalled from Triple-A Omaha and will start Thursday in Singer's place. It's possible Singer will be ready to make a start in the coming days, though it will depend on how he bounces back from the illness. Consider him day-to-day for the time being.

  • Royals' Brady Singer: Goes five innings versus Rays

Singer allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks while striking out three over five innings in a no-decision versus the Rays on Saturday. The Royals jumped out to a 2-0 lead after three innings, but Singer gave it back before his exit. The right-hander threw 57 of 90 pitches for strikes in a decent outing. He's been sharp this season, allowing one earned run or zero in eight of his 11 starts en route to a 2.63 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 64:19 K:BB through 61.2 innings. Singer's next start is projected to be at Minnesota.

  • Royals' Brady Singer: Falls to Mariners

Singer (3-2) took the loss against Seattle on Monday, allowing four runs on nine hits and one walk while striking out six batters over five innings. Singer came into Monday having allowed exactly one run in three straight starts, but he couldn't keep that momentum going. The right-hander yielded four runs across the second and third frames, marking just the second time this season he's given up that many runs over an entire game. Singer still has a strong 2.84 ERA and 1.11 WHIP through nine starts on the campaign, and he's tossed at least five frames in each of his outings thus far.

  • Royals' Brady Singer: Gets back in win column

Singer (3-1) earned the win Wednesday against Milwaukee, allowing one run on five hits and two walks over 5.1 innings. He struck out four. Singer tallied his first win in five starts, yielding one run for a third consecutive outing. He settled in nicely after allowing doubles to the first two batters he faced, keeping the Brewers off the scoreboard following the first frame. Singer has allowed more than two runs in just one start this season and owns a 2.36 ERA with 46 strikeouts across 45.2 innings. He's lined up for a start in Seattle on Monday.

  • Royals' Brady Singer: Punches out eight

Singer took a no-decision Friday against the Rangers after allowing one earned run on four hits while striking out eight batters through six innings. He did not issue a walk. Although Singer turned in yet another strong outing Friday, his contributions went unrewarded as the Royals were unable to take the lead until after the 27-year-old was removed from the game, giving the win to John Schreiber instead. Singer didn't get the win, but his 2.45 ERA and 42 strikeouts through 40.1 innings on the season still give fantasy managers plenty of reason to be pleased with his performance to begin the year.

  • Royals' Brady Singer: Tuesday's game postponed

Singer and the Royals won't play the White Sox on Tuesday since the game was postponed due to rain. The game will be made up via a straight doubleheader Wednesday, and Singer is slated to start the first of the two contests. The right-hander is off to a strong start this season with a 0.98 ERA, 0.76 WHIP and 18:4 K:BB across 18.1 innings.

  • Royals' Brady Singer: Improves to 2-0

Singer (2-0) earned the win over the Astros on Thursday, allowing one run on five hits over five innings. He struck out four. A Yainer Diaz home run in the fourth inning was the lone mark against Singer on Thursday. The 27-year-old right-hander has allowed just two runs through his first three starts (18.1 innings) this season, lowering his ERA to a pristine 0.98 with a 0.76 WHIP and 18:4 K:BB. Singer looks to be back on track after a tough 2023 campaign, during which he went 8-11 with a 5.52 ERA. He's tentatively lined up for a road matchup with the White Sox in his next outing.

  • Royals' Brady Singer: Sharp again in no-decision

Singer did not factor into the decision Friday against the White Sox, allowing one run on two hits and one walk over 6.1 innings. He struck out four. Singer could be putting together a resurgent 2024 campaign after another solid performance Friday night. The only blemish on his performance was a solo homer yielded to Gavin Sheets in the second inning. Singer has a 0.68 ERA and 14:2 K:BB through 13.1 innings but faces a more difficult test than the White Sox in his next start, which is currently scheduled to come at home against the Astros.

  • Royals' Brady Singer: Electric in season debut

Singer (1-0) earned the win after he pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing three hits and a walk while striking out 10 batters in Sunday's 11-0 victory over the Twins. Singer was in full command in his season debut, throwing 64 of his 98 total pitches for strikes while matching his 2023 season-high 10 punchouts. The right-hander has shown flashes throughout his first four major-league campaigns and is off to a great start in 2024. He's tentatively set to return to the mound Friday at home versus the White Sox.

  • Royals' Brady Singer: Committed to four-seamer, sweeper

Singer plans to utilize a four-seam fastball and sweeper more often this season, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. Singer began implementing the pitches a little late last season after some initial hesitation. This season, though, he's committed to using them as integral parts of his repertoire, adding them to his sinker, gyro slider and changeup. All three swinging strikeouts he induced during his Cactus League debut Wednesday versus the Mariners came on the sweeper. Singer has predominantly been a two-pitch pitcher in his career (the sinker and slider) and has struggled to miss bats with consistency. Perhaps the four-seamer and sweeper will allow him to pile up more strikeouts.

  • Royals' Brady Singer: Avoids arbitration

Singer (back) agreed to a one-year contract with the Royals on Thursday, avoiding arbitration, Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports. He finished last season on the shelf with a back strain after logging a 5.52 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 133 strikeouts in 159.2 innings. Singer's 2022 season looks like an outlier at this point, and he should be locked into a rotation role for Kansas City again in 2024.

  • Royals' Brady Singer: Out with back strain

Singer was placed on the 15-day injured list Tuesday with a left lower lumbar strain. The right-hander presumably picked up the injury during Monday's start against Cleveland, during which he gave up four runs over six innings. Singer had a strong six-week stretch from late June to mid-August with a 3.05 ERA across 59 innings, but he moves to the injured list having surrendered 24 earned runs in his past five starts. The 27-year-old won't be eligible to return until after the end of the regular season, and he closes the campaign with a 5.52 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 133:49 K:BB in 159.2 frames. Singer is entering his second year of arbitration eligibility and has more than four months to get healthy for spring training.

  • Royals' Brady Singer: Falls to White Sox

Singer (8-11) took the loss Tuesday, allowing six runs on nine hits and two walks over 5.1 innings in a 6-2 loss against the White Sox. He struck out two. Singer would ultimately settle down after giving up five runs in the opening inning, but the Royals couldn't overcome the early deficit, leaving Singer with his third loss in his last four starts. The 27-year-old right-hander has allowed four runs or more in each of his last four outings, raising his ERA to 5.51 with a 1.44 WHIP and 129:47 K:BB through 28 starts (153.2 innings) this season. Singer's currently in line for a tough home matchup with the Astros in his next outing.

  • Royals' Brady Singer: Bumped back by rain

Singer will not make his scheduled start Monday against the White Sox with the contest being postponed due to rain. Singer will have to wait a little longer than anticipated to take the mound, but not much, as he is scheduled to start the first game of the twin bill the Royals and White Sox will play Tuesday. Unless he gets an extra day of rest between starts, he will still get two starts during the current scoring period.

  • Royals' Brady Singer: Struggles with power

Singer did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing six runs on nine hits and one walk over five innings against the White Sox. He struck out two. Singer surrendered six runs for the second time in his last three starts Tuesday, with each run coming as result of a homer. On the day, the White Sox took Singer yard three times, with Yoan Moncada, Korey Lee and Andrew Vaughn each swatting long balls. Over his last three appearances (12.2 innings), Singer owns a 9.95 ERA and an 11:4 K:BB. He's tentatively scheduled for a rematch with the White Sox early next week.

  • Royals' Brady Singer: Could start Tuesday

Singer (arm) remains on the paternity list but could be activated during the upcoming week to start Tuesday's game against the White Sox, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. The Royals have already confirmed Cole Ragans and Jordan Lyles as their starters for their games Monday and Wednesday, respectively, making Tuesday the likely target for Singer's return to the rotation. Prior to being placed on the paternity list Friday, Singer hadn't pitched since Aug. 25 due to a bout of right arm fatigue, but he hasn't been shut down from throwing. Rogers notes that Singer was scheduled to complete a bullpen session Sunday, so assuming he checks out fine following the throwing workout, he should be ready to start Tuesday.
