Lopez is not in the starting lineup for Sunday's series finale against the Diamondbacks. Lopez will sit Sunday after starting in the first two games of the series, going 2-for-7 with two RBI. Vidal Brujan will start at second base and bat eighth against Arizona southpaw Blake Walston.... See More ... See Less

Marlins' Otto Lopez: Retaining regular role at keystone
Lopez will start at second base and bat eighth in Wednesday's game against the Brewers. Lopez will stick in the lineup for the 11th game in a row, with his starting assignments Tuesday and Wednesday being especially notable in light of Tim Anderson's return from the injured list earlier in the week. Vidal Brujan has been on the bench for both games since Anderson stepped back in as the Marlins' everyday shortstop, signaling that manager Skip Schumaker is content to stick with Lopez at the keystone while the 25-year-old is wielding a hot bat. Through 16 games thus far in May, Lopez is slashing .310/.362/.524 with two home runs, two stolen bases, 10 RBI and six runs.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Otto Lopez: Swipes bag in win
Lopez went 1-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base in Monday's extra-inning win over the Brewers. Making another start at second base, Lopez continued a strong stretch that has seen him slash .306/.350/.528 over the last 11 games with two homers, a steal, four runs and eight RBI. The 25-year-old has been forming an effective double-play duo with Vidal Brujan of late, but with Tim Anderson (back) poised to come off the IL, it's not clear how the Marlins will divvy up playing time at the middle-infield spots between the three players. Lopez has played well enough to remain in a significant role, however.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Otto Lopez: Homers again
Lopez went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run Monday against the Tigers. Lopez took advantage of his third-straight start in place of Tim Anderson by collecting his fourth hit and second homer during that short stretch of games. Lopez has played 17 games this season totaling 32 at-bats, hitting .313 with three homers, six RBI, eight runs and a steal. Lopez has displayed a nice hit tool throughout his seven-year rise through the minors, topping .300 in three separate seasons, but the recent power surge is not consistent with his expected profile.... Marlins' Otto Lopez: Draws third straight start
Lopez will start at second base and bat seventh in Monday's game against the Tigers. Lopez will make his third straight start in the middle infield while Tim Anderson sits again due to lower-back tightness. The 25-year-old has swung a hot bat over his last two starts, going 3-for-6 with a home run, a double and a walk.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Otto Lopez: Recalled from Triple-A
Lopez was recalled from Triple-A Jacksonville on Monday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. Lopez earned a promotion after 15-for-26 with two home runs at Jacksonville. He's starting at third base Monday against the Giants but should ultimately settle into a utility role.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Otto Lopez: Set to be recalled
Lopez will be recalled from Triple-A Jacksonville prior to Monday's game against the Giants, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. Lopez was claimed off waivers earlier this month and has gone 15-for-26 with two home runs at Jacksonville. The utility player should be used in a reserve role.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Otto Lopez: Loses 40-man roster spot
Lopez was designated for assignment by the Giants on Monday. The Giants needed to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Nick Avila. It's the second time since February that Lopez has been designated for assignment, as it previously happened with the Blue Jays before he was traded to San Francisco. There could be interest on waivers due to his versatility.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Otto Lopez: Optioned to Sacramento
The Giants optioned Lopez to Triple-A Sacramento on Tuesday, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. The Giants acquired Lopez from Toronto during the offseason, and he will return to the minors to begin the season after going 5-for-21 with a homer and nine RBI during the spring. Lopez has three hits in five career MLB plate appearances, though he will have to prove he can perform consistently in Triple-A before he can secure a big-league role.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Otto Lopez: Heading to San Francisco
Lopez was acquired by the Giants from the Blue Jays on Tuesday in exchange for cash considerations. Lopez was designated for assignment by the Blue Jays on Friday, and the Giants opted to acquired him via trade rather than risk losing out on a waiver claim. The 25-year-old utility player has just eight big-league games under his belt and struggled offensively at the Triple-A level last season with a .258/.313/.343 slash line in 84 contests.... Blue Jays' Otto Lopez: Exits 40-man roster
Lopez was designated for assignment by the Blue Jays on Friday, Kaitlyn McGrath of The Athletic reports. A spot on the 40-man roster was needed for Yariel Rodriguez, whose signing finally became official. Lopez saw spot action with the Blue Jays in 2021 and 2022 but spent all of 2023 at Triple-A Buffalo, posting a .656 OPS in 84 contests. The 25-year-old's bat is a little light, but he's young and can play all over the field, so there might be interest on waivers.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jays' Otto Lopez: Reinstated from 60-day IL
Lopez (oblique) was activated from the 60-day injured list Monday. This is a procedural move for the Blue Jays after Lopez finished the 2023 season on the injured list due to a left oblique strain. He'll be ready to roll for the start of spring training.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jays' Otto Lopez: Recalled, placed on 60-day IL
The Blue Jays recalled Lopez from Triple-A Buffalo on Tuesday and placed him on the 60-day injured list with a left oblique strain, Rob Longley of the Toronto Sun reports. Lopez last played at Triple-A on July 22 and is thus technically eligible for activation in late September, but he'll most likely remain on the IL for the rest of the season. Assuming that's the case, Lopez will wrap up the 2023 campaign with a .251/.307/.330 slash line and 31 RBI across 330 plate appearances with Buffalo. His move to the 60-day IL clears a spot on the 40-man roster for right-hander Hyun Jin Ryu (elbow), who was activated off the 60-day IL on Tuesday ahead of his scheduled start against the Orioles.... Blue Jays' Otto Lopez: Optioned to Triple-A
Lopez was optioned to Triple-A Buffalo by the Blue Jays on Tuesday. Lopez's stint in the big leagues lasted all of one day and he didn't make an appearance. Ernie Clement has taken his spot on the roster.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jays' Otto Lopez: Optioned to Triple-A
The Blue Jays optioned Lopez to Triple-A Buffalo on Tuesday, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports. Nathan Lukes beat Lopez out for the final position player spot on Toronto's roster. The versatile 24-year-old should get another shot with the big club soon enough.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jays' Otto Lopez: Hoping to play by Wednesday
Lopez (groin) could return to Grapefruit League play as soon as Wednesday, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca reports. Lopez suffered a left groin injury while playing for Team Canada in the World Baseball Classic, but he was able to go through a full workout -- including running the bases -- Monday without issue. The utility player is aiming for a spot on Toronto's Opening Day roster.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jays' Otto Lopez: Dealing with sore groin
Lopez is considered day-to-day due to left groin soreness, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca reports. Lopez picked up the injury while playing for Team Canada in the World Baseball Classic. He'll be given a couple days off before being re-evaluated. Lopez is competing for a reserve role with the Blue Jays.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jays' Otto Lopez: Could win final bench spot
Lopez is projected to secure the final spot on the Blue Jays' bench for Opening Day, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports. Toronto already has plenty of versatility on the infield with Santiago Espinal and Cavan Biggio all but locked into roster spots, but Lopez would provide added flexibility. The 24-year-old has only 11 big-league plate appearances over the last two seasons, but he slashed .297/.378/.415 through 91 games with Triple-A Buffalo in 2022 while playing second base, shortstop, center field and left field, and he's stolen double-digit bases in each of the last four minor-league campaigns. Lopez isn't hurting his chances of breaking camp on the 26-man roster either, going 7-for-15 to begin his spring with a 2:2 BB:K.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jays' Otto Lopez: Left off wild-card roster
Lopez did not make the Blue Jays' 26-man wild-card roster, Kaitlyn McGrath of The Athletic reports. Lopez is not on the postseason roster after he went 5-for-8 with three RBI in Wednesday's doubleheader against the Orioles. His absence from the wild-card roster is not surprising considering he only appeared in eight games with the Blue Jays this season.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jays' Otto Lopez: Called up Friday
Lopez was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo on Friday. Lopez spent the last month in the minors but will rejoin the Blue Jays ahead of Friday's series opener against the Rangers after Lourdes Gurriel (hamstring) was placed on the 10-day injured list. Lopez didn't log any at-bats during his earlier stints in the big leagues this year, but he's slashed .302/.379/.433 with three homers, 48 runs, 33 RBI and 14 stolen bases over 83 Triple-A games in 2022....
