Baz (elbow) struck out three and allowed one earned run on five hits and two walks over 3.1 innings Thursday in the third start of his minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A Durham. After issuing five walks in just 1.2 innings in his second rehab start, Baz demonstrated improved control. Though he still walked two of the 17 batters (11.8 percent) he faced, the right-hander spotted 49 of his 69 pitches for strikes. Baz will likely make at least one more rehab start for Durham before the Rays bring him back from the 15-day injured list.... See More ... See Less

Rays' Shane Baz: Lacks control in second rehab start
Baz (elbow/oblique) worked 1.2 innings and struck out one while allowing three earned runs on one hit and five walks Friday in his second rehab start with Triple-A Durham. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Baz's control has been spotty in his first two rehab starts in his first game action since July 2022 following a prolonged recovery from Tommy John surgery and two minor setbacks with his oblique. After working three innings and spotting 22 of his 39 pitches for strikes in his start with Durham on May 4, Baz found the strike zone on just 29 of his 59 pitches Friday and also hit a batter in addition to issuing five free passes. The fact that Baz was able to increase his pitch count was a positive takeaway, but he'll still need to improve his efficiency as he continues his buildup process in the minors. Baz will presumably need at least two more rehab starts before he returns from the 15-day injured list and makes his 2024 debut with the Rays.... See More ... See Less -
Rays' Shane Baz: Next rehab outing set
Baz (elbow/oblique) will start his second rehab outing with Triple-A Durham on Friday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Baz made his first rehab appearance Saturday and threw 39 pitches. He hasn't started in a big-league game since July 10, 2022, so the Rays will likely be cautious regarding the pace of his buildup. That makes a return in late May realistic.... See More ... Rays' Shane Baz: Throws 39 pitches in rehab start
Baz (elbow/oblique) gave up three earned runs on three hits and one walk in three innings Saturday during his first rehab start for Triple-A Durham. He failed to record a strikeout and built up to 39 pitches. He gave up a two-run home run on a changeup to Forrest Wall, which accounted for the brunt of the damage. Baz averaged 95 mph on his fastball, per Thomas Nestco of TJ Stats, and he will probably need to make several more rehab starts before rejoining the big-league rotation.... See More ... See Less -
Rays' Shane Baz: Headed to Durham for rehab
Baz (elbow) will make a rehab start with Triple-A Durham either Saturday or Sunday, MLB.com reports. Baz has thrown in two extended spring training games, the most recent of which came Monday. The next step in his recovery will come at Triple-A Durham to build up his pitch count. There is no specific timeline for Baz to return, but it's possible that he'll be back in late May.... Rays' Shane Baz: Throwing in extended spring game
Rays manager Kevin Cash said Monday that Baz (elbow/oblique) will soon throw two innings in an extended spring training game, Evan Closky of 10 Tampa Bay reports. Baz has already completed his rehab for the Tommy John procedure he underwent Sept. 28, 2022, but the right-hander wasn't available to pitch at any point in spring training after tending to a pair of oblique injuries. The Rays haven't shifted Baz to the 60-day injured list at this point in the season, but it would still be a surprise if he's ready to make his 2024 debut before late May. A timetable for his return remains up in the air and won't be clear until he heads out on what will likely be an extended minor-league rehab assignment.... See More ... See Less -
Rays' Shane Baz: Throws two-inning live BP
Manager Kevin Cash said Friday that Baz (oblique/elbow) is throwing two-inning live batting practice sessions and "feels good," MLB.com reports. Baz has dealt with two minor oblique setbacks during his comeback from Tommy John surgery, with the first coming when he picked up a weight in the weight room in early March. He's throwing and continuing to check boxes in his return, but he has never thrown 100 innings in a season and still hasn't begun a rehab assignment, so fantasy managers should be cautious in their optimism. Baz probably won't be ready to return from the 15-day injured list until mid-to-late May, at the earliest.... See More ... See Less -
Rays' Shane Baz: Officially placed on injured list
The Rays placed Baz on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to March 25, with a right elbow injury, Ryan Bass of Bally Sports Sun reports. Baz also dealt with an oblique injury this spring, but the plan was always to delay his season debut as he comes back from September 2022 Tommy John surgery. It remains something of a mystery as to when he will rejoin the Rays' rotation, but fantasy managers shouldn't be expecting him for at least the first month or two.... See More ... See Less -
Rays' Shane Baz: Will be built up slowly
Rays president of baseball operations Erik Neander said Tuesday that Baz (elbow) will be built up slowly coming out of spring training, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Baz had Tommy John surgery nearly 17 months ago and has completed that rehab. However, since he's coming off a lost season and didn't have ton of pro innings under his belt prior to that, the team will proceed cautiously with the young right-hander. Whether that could mean starting his season at extended spring training or in the minors isn't clear. Baz posted a 4.02 ERA and 48:12 K:BB over 40.1 innings covering nine starts for Tampa Bay from 2021-22.... See More ... See Less -
Rays' Shane Baz: Throwing bullpens
Baz (elbow) is long tossing and throwing bullpens as he works his way back from Tommy John surgery, Ryan Bass of Bally Sports Sun reports. Baz underwent the procedure in late September of last year, but there's been no talk of him trying to return quickly enough to pitch in the playoffs. The fact that he's ramping up this far from spring training bodes well for his readiness for the start of next season, however.... See More ... See Less -
Rays' Shane Baz: Transferred to 60-day IL
Baz was transferred to the 60-day injured list by the Rays on Thursday with a right elbow UCL tear, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports. The move clears a spot on the 40-man roster for Braden Bristo. Baz will be out until 2024 as he continues his recovery from Tommy John surgery, which he underwent late last September.... See More ... Rays' Shane Baz: Officially placed on IL
The Rays placed Baz (elbow) on the 15-day injured list Wednesday. Baz underwent Tommy John surgery last September and won't be an option for the Rays until 2024. He'll be moved to the 60-day IL when the Rays need to free up a spot on the 40-man roster down the road.... See More ... See Less -
Rays' Shane Baz: Requires Tommy John surgery
Baz will undergo Tommy John surgery and won't play during the 2023 season, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Baz underwent an arthroscopic procedure on his elbow in late March and returned to action for a month just before the All-Star break, but he was shut down in mid-July with a right elbow sprain and had already been ruled out for the season. The Rays seemed optimistic about his recovery process, but the right-hander will be forced to miss the 2023 season since doctors have recommended Tommy John surgery.... See More ... See Less -
Rays' Shane Baz: Done for season
Baz (elbow) will not return this season, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Baz resumed throwing in late August and, according to the report, "seems to be doing okay in recovery," but the Rays will take the cautious route and shut him down for the rest of the campaign. Barring a setback, expect Baz to be back at 100 percent well in advance of spring training in 2023.... See More ... See Less -
Rays' Shane Baz: Shifts to 60-day injured list
Baz (elbow) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Saturday, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports. Baz hit the injured list Thursday with a right elbow sprain. He'll be shut down for a month after receiving a platelet-rich plasma injection, so he likely wouldn't have had a chance to return within 60 days even without this transaction. He'll now be officially unable to make it back before September 9, and it's not yet clear if he'll be ready to return on that date or at any point over the last month of the regular season.... Rays' Shane Baz: Goes on IL with elbow sprain
The Rays placed Baz on the 15-day injured list Thursday with a right elbow sprain after he experienced discomfort while playing catch Tuesday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. He'll receive a platelet-rich plasma injection for the elbow and will rest and rehab for a month before being re-evaluated, according to Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network. Even if he's cleared to resume throwing following the four-week shutdown, Baz will likely need at least a couple weeks to get ramped back up for game action, so fantasy managers shouldn't count on the right-hander making his way back from the IL until at least early September. That reality likely makes Baz a comfortable drop in most redraft leagues, and his injury could prompt the Rays to explore acquiring another starting pitcher prior to the Aug. 2 trade deadline. After opening the season on the IL while recovering from arthroscopic surgery on the same elbow, Baz debuted June 11 and produced a 5.00 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 30:9 K:BB in 27 innings before succumbing to another elbow-related setback.... Rays' Shane Baz: Fans seven in victory
Baz (1-1) allowed one run on seven hits and two walks over six innings Sunday, striking out seven and earning a win over Toronto. The lone run given up by Baz came during the third inning on Vladimir Guerrero's RBI single. After coughing up five runs in his season debut, the 23-year-old righty has allowed three runs with a 26:6 K:BB over his last 22.1 frames. He lowered his season ERA to 2.92 with 28 punchouts through five outings. Baz is lined up to start in Cincinnati next weekend.... See More ... See Less -
Rays' Shane Baz: Looks good against Yankees
Baz did not factor in the decision against the Yankees on Wednesday, allowing one run on four hits and two walks while striking out six over 4.2 innings. Baz held New York scoreless through three innings before serving up a solo homer to Aaron Judge in the fourth. The right-handed hurler began to falter in the fifth, allowing three straight hitters to reach base on a single and two walks with one out, but he struck out Judge with the bases loaded before giving way to a reliever. Baz was one out away from qualifying for the win when he was pulled, though that detail was made moot when the Yankees came back to win. After allowing five runs over 2.1 innings in his first start of the season June 11, Baz has bounced back to allow only one run across 10.2 frames while racking up 13 strikeouts in his subsequent pair of outings.... Rays' Shane Baz: Fires six shutout innings
Baz yielded two hits over six scoreless frames in Friday's loss to Baltimore. He struck out seven without walking a batter and did not factor in the decision. Baz looked much better in his second start of the season after getting stung for five runs in 2.2 innings in his 2022 debut. He threw 48 of 76 pitches for strikes, including 14 swinging strikes, and he struck out the side in his final frame. He's sporting a 5.40 ERA through 8.1 frames after missing the start of the season due to an elbow injury. Baz is projected to face the Yankees at home next week.... See More ... See Less -
Rays' Shane Baz: Season debut coming Saturday
Rays manager Kevin Cash said Baz (elbow) is on track to come off the 60-day injured list to start Saturday's game in Minnesota, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. As anticipated, Baz will be ready to make his season debut this weekend after he recently wrapped up a four-start rehab assignment at Triple-A Durham. In his most recent outing Sunday, Baz struck out 10 over 4.1 innings while building up to 79 pitches, so he shouldn't face any significant restrictions with his workload in his first start with the Rays. In his first taste of the big leagues late last season, Baz produced a 2.03 ERA, 0.68 WHIP and 18:3 K:BB across 13.1 innings over his three starts.... See More ... See Less
