2021 MLS Cup score: NYCFC beat Portland Timbers in penalty kicks to win title thanks to Sean Johnson's saves

New York City FC have their first MLS Cup in franchise history as they defeated the Portland Timbers in their home via a penalty shootout after the match ended 1-1 after regulation and extra time. Founded in 2013, NYCFC got an early goal from Golden Boot winner Valentin Castellanos who capitalized off some clumsy goalkeeping in wet conditions from Portland keeper Steve Clark. Felipe Mora scored the equalizer at the death as no one was able to find the breakthrough goal in the 30 minutes of extra time. NYCFC keeper Sean Johnson was the hero in this one as he made two clutch saves to secure a 4-2 shootout win to clinch the title.

The Portland Timbers never got things going early on as Sebastian Blanco seemed to be playing at 60 percent after replacing Santiago Moreno in the lineup from the Western Conference final. Early on, both sides were essentially playing a back-and-forth match as the slick field gave them all trouble keeping the ball. There was a point when New York City FC were clear through in the box and Tayvon Gray and Maxi Moralez both slipped in the box for Portland to regain possession. That summed up how the wet conditions were on Saturday at Providence Park.

Things did open up a little thanks to a Claudio Bravo foul on Tayvon Gray in the 40th minute. Dead ball specialist Moralez sent in the free kick that Castellanos headed into the net, but it's a chance that should have been saved by Clark, who saw the ball slip past his fingers in the wet surface and trickle into the back of the net for the first goal of the game.

This is familiar territory for Clark as he had a similar mistake in 2015 while playing for the Columbus Crew against the Portland Timbers. During the goal celebration, a fan in the stands launched a beer can that struck NYCFC's Jesus Medina high, though it looks like it did end up avoiding his face.

Once New York got their noses ahead, Moralez began pinging passes around the pitch using his experience to manage the game and hold the result. It seemed as if it would have worked out flawlessly, but Filipe Mora had other plans as he made up for his miss earlier in the match by rifling a finish past Sean Johnson in the 94th minute. Mora goal was the latest a goal has ever been scored in regulation of MLS Cup, but New York wanted it ruled out for a foul. Maxime Chanot appealed to head referee Armando Villarreal as his teammates encircled the officials to no avail.

In the first period of extra time, NYCFC seemed disjointed as they weren't able to move on from Portland's equalizer being ruled out. Even with the Timbers having players out of position due to tossing on so many attackers, NYCFC couldn't cut through their defense. Portland veteran Diego Valeri, who likely played the final game of his career, had the best chance for both sides with a shot in space from outside the box but he fired it into the stands behind the box.

NYCFC now join Manchester City (English Premier League), Mumbai City (Indian Super League) and Melbourne City (Australian A League) as the four reigning champions in four different men's top-flight leagues for City Football Group (h/t Bob Williams).

We have our first yellow of the match and it's handed to Van Rankin for a lunge at Rodriguez. In what has been a chippy match so far, there will be more cards from here especially now that the rain is picking up.

Rodriguez takes a speculative effort from outside the box but it doesn't amount to anything as Clark is ready. On the counter, Medina has a much better shot but Clark makes another save as New York are finally getting it going to start the second half. Still 1-0 NYC in the 58th mintue.

52' Portland on the front-foot now as they go in search for the equalizer. A dangerous set piece now could very well lead to the chance the Timbers need. The passing has been sharper early in the second half.

Prior to the half, Jesus Medina was hit with a beer can that was thrown by a fan. While he is okay and will continue, the fan was identified and ejected by security. Per the Portland Timbers, the fan was also banned from Providence Park.

Checking the video of the goal, Clark won't forget this one for a while but Portland getting on the scoresheet would help a lot.

Medina is okay after being struck by a beer can that was thrown from the crowd but tensions are rising. Will the goal be enough?

What a ball that is from Moralez. A lovely back-post cross, but yes Chuck, the goalkeeper really should have done better there. A nightmare.

We've got a goal!

Castellanos gets the opener but Steve Clark is having nightmares as he should have saved that one. None other than Moralez finding the golden boot winner from a dead ball situation. Medina is down for NYC but the referee is trying to figure out what happened. 1-0 NYC

71 percent of the earth is covered by water, the rest is covered by Diego Chara. Dialing back the clock, Chara stays with Castellanos to ensure that New York can't get things going. Still a back and forth match with the score knotted 0-0 in the 39th-miniute.

Potential worry for New York.

Maxi Moralez isn't moving well after going down a few minutes ago. He has been nursing a calf injury but if he has to leave the match it will be quite the blow for New York. He will try to carry on but it's something to keep an eye on.

So close!

Portland can't clear their lines and Morales almost found Castellanos for a New York opener in the 31st minute. It feels like we're close to seeing a goal soon.

Great tackle from Bravo to snuff out a New York counter. Blanco looks to cross into the box but Johnson was ready. Portland is growing into things as we enter the 30th minute but the match is still level at 0-0.

Sean Johnson finally has to do something. A looping cross from Blanco finds Mora but he's not able to put the chance on target. Things are beginning to get a little chippy as well as Castellanos is riling up Portland.

Homegrown Tayvon Gray is the second-youngest player to ever start an MLS Cup behind Aiden Morris of the Columbus Crew in 2020. Morris registered an assist in that match, will Gray have a similar impact today? He's already finding space for NYC but his teammates are struggling to get him the ball so far.

It's quite the open game so far, with NYCFC looking a bit sharper. Chances hard to come by, but this is encouraging from the visitors early on.

Fochive brings down Sands with a crunching tackle to try to stop NYC from moving the ball so quickly. No cards are given but you'd have to think that Fochive's next challenge will see a yellow.

The conditions are showing as Tayvon Gray and Maxi Moralez both slip and fall on the edge of the box. NYC is trying to push the pace but it is easier said than done with such a saturated pitch. Portland will need to regain control or they could end up behind sooner than later.

Early on Portland has the slight advantage in possession but the two teams are still feeling each other out. No real chances of note but passing the ball has been tougher than expected with neither side cracking 70 percent pass accuracy early.

Less than a minute in and Maxi Moralez has already tested Steve Clark. New York will want to get off to a fast start to quiet the home crowd if they can.
