  • Sam Gagner: Cut loose from PTO

Carolina released Gagner on Sunday from his professional tryout agreement, Chris Johnston of The Athletic reports. Gagner chipped in five goals and five assists in 28 games with Edmonton during the 2023-24 regular season. There isn't much time left before the 2024-25 campaign begins for most teams, so he may have to settle for an AHL contract before aiming for a two-way agreement.

  • Hurricanes' Sam Gagner: Three points Saturday

Gagner scored a goal on two shots and added two assists and a plus-3 rating in Saturday's preseason win over the Predators. The 35-year-old is in camp with Carolina on a PTO, and Gagner made a strong final statement in his attempt to win a roster spot. He suited up for 28 regular-season games with the Oilers in 2023-24, contributing five goals and 10 points.

  • Hurricanes' Sam Gagner: Secures tryout

Gagner will take part in training camp with Carolina on a professional tryout agreement, Walt Ruff of the Hurricanes' official site reports Tuesday. Gagner saw action in just 28 regular-season games for the Oilers last year and was a healthy scratch throughout the postseason. If he does earn a full NHL contract coming out of camp, he figures to slot into a fourth-line role and could find himself periodically serving as a healthy scratch. As such, Gagner is unlikely to offer much in terms of fantasy value this season.

  • Oilers' Sam Gagner: Called up Wednesday

Gagner was called up from AHL Bakersfield on Wednesday, Jason Gregor of Sports 1440 Edmonton reports. The Oilers are bolstering their forward depth ahead of their last two games of the regular season. The 34-year-old had 10 points across 27 top-level games earlier in the campaign. He'll likely fill a bottom-six role at some point during the team's last back-to-back of the regular season.

  • Oilers' Sam Gagner: Sent to minors

Gagner was reassigned to AHL Bakersfield on Wednesday, per Daniel Nugent-Bowman of The Athletic. Although Gagner cleared waivers, he was initially kept on Edmonton's roster. However, after the Oilers acquired Adam Henrique and Sam Carrick from Anaheim on Wednesday, the decision was made to send Gagner to the minors. The 34-year-old has five goals and 10 points in 27 outings with the Oilers in 2023-24.

  • Oilers' Sam Gagner: Likely to remain in NHL

Gagner is expected to remain in the NHL if he clears waivers Wednesday, Daniel Nugent-Bowman of The Athletic reports. Gagner being waived by Edmonton on Tuesday was a maneuver to give the team options ahead of the trade deadline. The Oilers hope to acquire a defenseman and should such a move come to fruition, they'll be able to temporarily assign Gagner to AHL Bakersfield to stay cap compliant. He has five goals and 10 points in 27 top-level contests this season.

  • Oilers' Sam Gagner: Trouble getting into lineup

Gagner has been scratched for six of the Oilers' 10 games in February. Gagner has been the Oilers' most frequent healthy scratch during a stretch in which the team is fully healthy and carrying only one extra skater. The 34-year-old doesn't have a point since Jan. 20, though he's played just six times since then. Overall, he's at 10 points, 44 shots on net and an even plus-minus rating through 26 appearances.

  • Oilers' Sam Gagner: Nets game-winner

Gagner scored a goal on two shots in Saturday's 3-1 win over the Flames. The Oilers' superstars were mostly quieted, but Gagner was able to make an impact from the fourth line in his second game back from an undisclosed injury. The 34-year-old scored early in the third period, and that goal was the game-winner. He has 10 points, 41 shots on net and a plus-3 rating over 20 appearances this season. If Gagner continues to play well, it may be difficult for Adam Erne to find his way back into the lineup.

Gagner (undisclosed) will be in action versus Seattle on Thursday, Mark Spector of Sportsnet reports. • Oilers' Sam Gagner: Still banged up

Gagner (undisclosed) is still banged up, which is why he didn't take the spot of Ryan McLeod (illness) for Saturday's game versus the Canadiens, Jason Gregor of Sports 1440 Edmonton reports. Gagner was reportedly cleared of a concussion Jan. 5, but he hasn't gotten back into the lineup. Gregor's report sheds light as for why Gagner has been sitting out. The 34-year-old will miss his ninth straight game Saturday and should be considered out indefinitely until a further update is available.

The 34-year-old set up goals by Ryan McLeod and Adam Erne as the Oilers got some contributions from their bottom six in Thursday's win. Gagner is up to a solid nine points with 39 shots and a plus-3 rating over 18 appearances this season, so he should have no trouble staying in the lineup when healthy.

  • Oilers' Sam Gagner: Enters lineup, scores goal

Gagner netted a goal on two shots in Tuesday's 5-4 shootout win over the Golden Knights. The 34-year-old forward has managed four points, 20 shots on net, eight hits, six blocked shots and an even plus-minus rating over nine appearances, though he's unlikely to see much more than bottom-six usage when he plays.

  • Oilers' Sam Gagner: Earns power-play assist

Gagner notched a power-play assist, two shots on goal and two blocked shots in Monday's 6-2 loss to the Canucks. Gagner set up a Mattias Ekholm tally at 6:42 of the first period. With three points in as many games since signing to rejoin the Oilers at the start of November, Gagner has at least tried to help the team amid its early struggles. He's added eight shots on net, five hits and a plus-2 rating while seeing middle-six minutes and some power-play time. Gagner has some experience as a power-play specialist, but playing on the second unit in Edmonton is unlikely to provide much of a meaningful boost to his production.
