NFL 2023 cuts, waiver claims: Latest moves as all 32 teams finalize rosters ahead of new season

The 2023 NFL preseason is in the books, and now it's full-speed to the regular season. As we head toward the Kansas City Chiefs and Detroit Lions kicking the year off on Thursday, Sept. 7, there is still some fine-tuning that needs to be done to each roster across the league. On Tuesday, clubs needed to trim their summer rosters from the maximum of 90 players down to 53, which opened up hundreds of players to waivers. That's the next step to this equation.

Teams will now be able to comb through the various players who were waived on Tuesday and, if they so choose, put in a claim to bring them aboard. The cutdown deadline saw a bunch of notable names suddenly become available, so it'll be fascinating to see if teams pounce at the opportunity. For those who want to know the wavier order, it's the same as the 2023 NFL Draft.

To help with that and keep you caught up with all the action, we've rolled out our live tracker, where we'll be doing most of the heavy lifting and chronicling all the claims that have been made across the league.

In Minnesota, the Vikings have waived former first-round wideout Jalen Reagor, per ESPN. The club had initially tried to trade him, but not deal came to fruition.

And we have our first waiver claim of the day on Wednesday. The Chicago Bears have claimed defensive end Khalid Kareem from the Colts, per NFL Media. The former fifth-round pick has 29 career tackles and one sack in 27 games played.

Outside of Damar Hamlin making the Bills 53-man roster, the other notable news out of cutdown day in Buffalo resides at quarterback. The team placed Matt Barkley on injured reserve, meaning Kyle Allen will be back up Josh Allen to begin the year.

Cool story out of New Orleans: Jimmy Graham has made the 53-man roster. The franchise legend made his return this offseason and played well during the preseason, catching four passes for 44 yards and a touchdown. Graham was a third-round pick of the Saints in 2010 and last played for the organization in 2014. He hasn't played in a regular season game since 2021.

As for the defending Super Bowl champs, the holdout from star DT Chris Jones is continuing. The Chiefs officially placed him on the reserve/Did Not Report list on Tuesday, per CBS Sports NFL Insider Jonathan Jones. K.C. traded for DT Neil Farrell earlier today as depth along the defensive line.

The Dolphins did a lot of cap-clearing today but were unable to land Jonathan Taylor. They were also unable to agree to terms on a long-term deal with DT Christian Watson, per ESPN. Wilkins' team was reportedly not agreeable to the guarantee structure of the contracts Miami was offering.

Big surprise in Foxborough as the Patriots waived second-year quarterback Bailey Zappe. He rivaled Mac Jones for the starting job at times last season but didn't have the best preseason/training camp. On top of that, MassLive.com reports that New England has also rookie Malik Cunningham. That means Mac Jones is the only quarterback currently on the roster.

As teams bring down their rosters to 53 players, the NFL has placed Titans running back Hassan Haskins on the Commissioner Exempt List stemming from an arrest this summer on charges of aggravated assault, per NFL Media. Haskins can't practice or attend games while on the list.

The Colts had conversations with the Miami Dolphins about Taylor, per The Athletic. However, a trade was never able to materialize. Indy wanted a first round pick and reportedly never was offered one.

The biggest shoe of the day has dropped. There is NO DEAL for Jonathan Taylor and the star running back will stay put in Indianapolis, according to multiple reports. Not only that, but Taylor will remain on the PUP list, per The Athletic, meaning he will be sidelined for the first four games of the year.

Two notable quarterbacks who came available today: Tommy DeVito and Ben DiNucci. DeVito had a nice camp with the Giants, and DiNucci spent the summer with the Broncos after having a good season with the XFL's Sea Dragons. Bengals are among the teams that might be interested in adding a QB.

While Justin Fields is the clear QB1 in Chicago, there is a fascinating quarterback development with the Bears. The team is releasing veteran Nathan Peterman, according to NFL Media. They reportedly hope to get him back on the practice squad, but this also means that undrafted rookie Tyson Bagent, a product of Division II Shepherd, is currently the top backup.

More trades coming as teams continue to get down to 53 players. This one concerning the Cowboys and Dolphins.
