DETROIT -- Straight from the Tigers' clubhouse, here's what I'm pretty sure is the bone Ty Cobb used to treat his bats so long ago:
In My Life in Baseball: The True Record, Cobb's autobiography, the all-time great writes/dictates:
Consider that excerpt Exhibit A for my theory that what you see above is Cobb's "bat bone." Exhibit B is this from the always unimpeachable Wikipedia: "As of 1999, when the Tigers completed their tenure at Tiger Stadium, a bone remained a fixture in the clubhouse on a table next to the bat rack."
So, yes: That's the bone Ty Cobb used for the care and feeding of his bats. I'm going with that.
