Abreu went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 4-3 loss to the Rays. Abreu gave Boston a 2-1 lead with his solo blast in the fourth inning. The homer was the fourth for Abreu, who has settled into the strong-side platoon role after a shaky start to the season. He's currently slashing .305/.391/.547 against right-handers.... See More ... Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Sitting versus southpaw
Abreu is out of the starting lineup for Sunday's series finale against the Nationals, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports. The lefty-hitting Abreu will begin Sunday's game in the dugout as Washington sends out left-hander MacKenzie Gore. Ceddanne Rafaela will start in center field, while Jarren Duran and Tyler O'Neill man left and right field, respectively. Abreu hit a solo home run in the bottom of the third inning in Saturday's 4-2 win. He's slashing .284/.378/.480 with three home runs and 14 RBI over 119 plate appearances this season.... See More ... Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Not starting against Nats
Abreu is out of the starting lineup for Friday's game against the Nationals. The rookie outfielder will look on from the dugout as Boston takes on left-hander Patrick Corbin. Abreu is slashing .276/.368/.439 with 13 RBI and five stolen bases on the year. Tyler O'Neill will move from his normal left field spot to fill in for Abreu in right.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Sitting against southpaw
Abreu is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Giants, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports. With southpaw Kyle Harrison on the bump for the Giants, the lefty-hitting Abreu will retreat to the bench for the series finale. The Red Sox will have Tyler O'Neill move from his usual spot in left field to replace Abreu in right.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Swipes fifth bag
Abreu went 1-for-3 with a walk, a run and a stolen base in Wednesday's 6-2 win against the Giants. Abreu stole a base in three straight games between April 15 and 18, but he hadn't notched any thefts over his subsequent 10 contests coming into Wednesday. The 24-year-old outfielder continues to cement his place in the starting lineup, as he's slashing .316/.395/.519 with two homers, 12 RBI, 14 runs and five thefts on the campaign. Abreu began the campaign as Boston's fourth outfielder, but has since emerged as the team's everyday right fielder and cleanup hitter.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Another multi-hit game
Abreu went 3-for-4 with a walk, a double, a triple, an RBI and a run scored in Tuesday's 4-0 win over San Francisco. Abreu is swinging a productive bat; this was his fifth multi-hit game over the last 10 contests, during which he's 18-for-41 with nine extra-base hits, 10 RBI and eight runs scored. Much of that production has come as the cleanup batter, a spot that had been filled by Triston Casas prior to the oblique injury that landed him on the 60-day injured list.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Sitting out Friday
Abreu is not in the lineup for Friday's game versus the Cubs. Southpaw Shota Imanaga is toeing the rubber for the Cubs, so the left-handed hitting Abreu is receiving a day off. Tyler O'Neill will cover right field and Rob Refsnyder will get a start in left for the Red Sox.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Another three-hit day
Abreu went 3-for-5 with a double, two RBI and a run scored during Sunday's 6-1 victory over the Pirates Abreu's three-hit day represented his second such effort in three days, as he posted multiple RBI for the first time this season. Abreu entered the series with PIttsburgh hitting just .184 but reached base 10 times, going 7-for-12 with three walks, a homer, two doubles, four RBI and three runs scored during the weekend set to raise his average to .280 with a .390 on-base percentage.... Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Steals base in win
Abreu started in right field and went 0-for-2 with a walk and stolen base in Wednesday's 2-0 win over Cleveland. Abreu swiped a bag for the third consecutive game and fourth consecutive start; he ranks second on the team with four stolen bases. He has a history of high-volume attempted steals in the minors, so this flurry is not out of character. Red Sox manager Alex Cora indicated earlier in the week that Abreu will be in the lineup against right-handers for the time being, which puts him on the fantasy radar. The outfielder has reached base safely over the last six appearances (five starts), adding five runs scored to his four steals during that stretch.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Will play every day versus righties
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Monday that he plans to begin playing Abreu every day against right-handers, Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports. Abreu is making just his seventh start of the season Monday, but he has been in the lineup for four of the last five contests versus righties and it sounds like he'll be a regular against them moving forward. Ceddanne Rafaela is getting a start at shortstop Monday and it would appear he'll see more action there moving forward. Abreu has just a .618 OPS this season but put up an .862 OPS in 28 games in 2023.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Receiving third start
Abreu will start in right field and bat ninth in Wednesday's contest in Oakland, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. It will be just the third start so far for Abreu, who seems to be a clear fourth in the Red Sox's outfield pecking order. He had batted fifth in his first start and seventh in his second but will occupy the bottom of the batting order Wednesday. Tyler O'Neill is getting a day off.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Makes debut
Abreu started in right field and went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in Saturday's 4-3 extra-inning loss to the Mariners. Abreu, who opened spring training as the likely starter in right field, sat out the first two games of the regular season. The addition of Ceddanne Rafaela to the Opening Day roster forced a realignment in the outfield that did not benefit Abreu. Additionally, a rough spring in which he batted .127 and struck out 26 times in 77 plate appearances didn't help his cause.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Not included in projected lineup
Abreu was not included in the projected Opening Day starting lineup by Ian Browne of MLB.com. Ceddanne Rafaela has made the team and seems to have played himself into a regular role, while Abreu has struggled to a .588 OPS and 24 strikeouts in 24 games this spring. Tyler O'Neill has not played right field in the majors since 2019, but the Red Sox could move him there at Abreu's expense, or perhaps Jarren Duran could move to right. While the 24-year-old Abreu showed promise in a small sample in the majors last season, the whiffs might push him to a bench role or back to the minors to begin 2024.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Piling up strikeouts
Abreu went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts in Thursday's spring game against Philadelphia. Abreu entered camp as the favorite to become the primary starter in right field, but the outfielder is 4-for-36 with 16 strikeouts in Grapefruit League action. That might not be an issue for an established major leaguer, but Abreu has limited MLB experience (28 games). Additionally, Rob Refsnyder's fractured toe (four-to-six weeks) and Ceddanne Rafaela's strong spring could be reshaping the outfield.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Goes deep
Abreu went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Wednesday's spring game against the Twins. Abreu's first spring homer was the highlight of the day for Boston, which lost 7-1. It's been a slow start to the Grapefruit League for Abreu, who was hitless over his first 10 at-bats and 1-for-15 before a triple Tuesday followed by Wednesday's long ball. Despite the results, Red Sox manager Alex Cora told Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe that Abreu is putting together good at-bats and swinging at the right pitches.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Early favorite for right field job
Abreu opens spring training as the leading candidate to start in right field, Julian McWilliams of the Boston Globe reports. "His arm and the way he moves. He's a good defender," manager Alex Cora said. "That's why we're so confident. He's a good athlete. He likes to show off his arm." Abreu made his MLB debut in 2023 and posted an .862 OPS over 85 plate appearances. Boston's coaches rave about his arm strength, which is important when playing right field at Fenway Park, especially after last season's limitations to shifting prevented infielders from lining up in short right. The 5-foot-10 Abreu hit for power in the minors with 22 home runs and a .264 ISO at Triple-A Worcester last year.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Could play big role
Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow indicated Wednesday that Abreu could receive significant playing time next season, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports. Breslow was being asked about Boston's outfield situation in the wake of the Alex Verdugo trade, and he said he has no current plans to make any outside additions. That indicates both Abreu and Ceddanne Rafaela are poised to play a lot alongside Jarren Duran and Masataka Yoshida. Abreu made a nice first impression with Boston in 2023, posting an .862 OPS with two homers and three steals over 28 contests.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Takes seat versus lefty
Abreu is absent from the lineup Friday at Baltimore. Rob Refsnyder, Ceddanne Rafaela and Adam Duvall will start across the outfield for the Red Sox as they take on left-hander John Means. Abreu has drawn only seven plate appearances versus lefties since being promoted to Boston in August.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Knocks in two
Abreu started in center field and went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI in Tuesday's 9-7 loss to the Rays. The Red Sox made what looked like a blowout early into a fun affair. Abreu's two-run double in the fifth inning followed Enmanuel Valdez's three-run home run in the fourth, cutting the Rays' early seven-run lead to 7-5. Both Abreu and Valdez, who were acquired from the Astros last season in exchange for Christian Vazquez, have gotten their first tastes of the majors in 2023. Abreu, who made a second consecutive start after missing a handful of games last week due to a hand injury, has been a bright spot since being called up in late August, posting a .371/.435/.565 slash line in 23 games.... Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Back in action Sunday
Abreu (hand) is starting in left field and batting sixth Sunday against the White Sox, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. The 24-year-old has been held out of the starting nine since Sept. 16 with a hand injury, but he'll rejoin the lineup for Sunday's series finale versus Chicago. Abreu has a .364/.435/.509 slash line with a homer, three steals, 10 RBI and eight runs in 62 plate appearances since making his MLB debut Aug. 22.... See More ... See Less
