Olivares went 2-for-4 in Thursday's win over the Cubs with a double, a two-run homer and two runs scored. Olivares put the Pirates on the board with a two-run blast off Justin Steele in the top of the first and later added a double in the sixth before coming around to score on a sacrifice fly from Yasmani Grandal. The home run was Olivares' fifth of the season and he's now hit safely in three straight games. It also marked only the second time this season he scored two runs in a contest.... See More ... Pirates' Edward Olivares: Grand in win
Olivares went 2-for-4 with a grand slam and a double in Monday's win over the Angels. Olivares generated all the offense Pittsburgh needed to defeat the Angels on Monday night, blasting a 424-foot grand slam in the third inning. The 28-year-old is the short-side of a platoon currently with Jack Suwinski, which limits his overall fantasy value. Olivares is hitting .218/.282/.397 with four homers, 12 RBI and 10 runs scored in 85 plate appearances.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Edward Olivares: Retreats to bench Sunday
Olivares is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Phillies, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports. Olivares had started each of the past four games -- two against right-handed starting pitchers and two against lefties -- while going 5-for-15 with a pair of solo home runs and an additional run. The 28-year-old still looks like the Pirates' fourth outfielder/backup designated hitter, but he's playing regularly versus lefties and often enough against righties to warrant consideration for a roster spot in deeper mixed leagues.... Pirates' Edward Olivares: Clubs two homers in loss
Olivares went 2-for-4 with two solo home runs during Tuesday's 5-3 loss to the Tigers. The 28-year-old put Pittsburgh on the board with a solo blast during the second inning and followed up with another solo shot in the sixth. Olivares hasn't been an everyday starter in the early going with six starts through 12 games, though his three homers and .321/.367/.679 slash line in 30 plate appearances could certainly earn him more playing time.... Pirates' Edward Olivares: Occupying right field Monday
Olivares will start in right field and bat fifth in Monday's game versus the Nationals. Most of Olivares' playing time this season will likely come against left-handers, and luckily for him, the Pirates have faced five southpaw starters in as many games to open the campaign. Olivares has been in the lineup four times, reaching base five times and hitting a home run in the first three of those contests.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Edward Olivares: Gets start versus southpaw
Olivares is starting in right field and batting fifth in Friday's game in Miami, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Olivares didn't start Opening Day against a lefty, but he gets the nod in the second game with southpaw A.J. Puk on the hill. The left-handed hitting Jack Suwinski has been on the bench for both games.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Edward Olivares: Sluggish start to spring
Olivares is 2-for-18 with four strikeouts in Grapefruit League action. The Pirates acquired Olivares this winter, and he should have a role in right field with the team in 2024. Exactly how much he'll play is unclear, as the Pirates also have Josh Palacios (leg) and Connor Joe as potential fits at the position. Olivares's spring performance isn't ideal given the competition for playing time, though his adequate 22.2 percent strikeout rate suggests a few more hits could start falling in soon.... See More ... Pirates' Edward Olivares: Settles at $1.35 million
Olivares signed a $1.35 million contract with the Pirates on Thursday to avoid arbitration, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. After slashing .263/.317/.452 with 36 RBI across 385 plate appearances last season with Kansas City, Olivares was traded to Pittsburgh in December. The 27-year-old outfielder boasts an .800 OPS against southpaws since 2021 and figures to be a regular part of Pittsburgh's lineup in 2024.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Edward Olivares: Traded to Pirates
The Royals traded Olivares to the Pirates on Friday in exchange for Deivis Nadal, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. With the signing of Chris Stratton becoming official Friday, the Royals unloaded Olivares to make room on their 40-man roster. The 27-year-old will likely be used both in the outfield and as a designated hitter next season, and he provides a significant boost to Pittsburgh's lineup against lefties after slashing .277/.339/.518 versus southpaws last season.... Royals' Edward Olivares: Swats 12th homer
Olivares went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Sunday's 5-2 win over the Yankees. From the start of September, Olivares went 23-for-70 (.329) with six homers, 16 RBI and two stolen bases over 22 games. It was a strong finish to the campaign for the outfielder, who has hit for a decent average at times with little pop. For the season, he slashed .263/.317/.452 with 12 long balls, 11 stolen bases, 36 RBI, 47 runs scored, 23 doubles and four triples across 385 plate appearances.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Edward Olivares: Not starting Saturday
Olivares isn't in the Royals' lineup Saturday against the Yankees. Olivares will step out of the lineup after slugging a two-run home run during Friday's win. Salvador Perez will shift to the DH spot in Olivares' absence while Logan Porter starts behind the dish.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Edward Olivares: Lifts 11th homer
Olivares went 1-for-5 with a two-run home run in Friday's 12-5 win over the Yankees. Olivares went 13 games without a homer before Friday's blast, though he hit .318 (14-for-44) with four doubles and two stolen bases in that span. The 27-year-old's long ball came in the first inning as part of a nine-run blitz to begin the contest. He's up to 11 homers, 35 RBI, 46 runs scored, 11 steals and a .264/.318/.447 slash line through 105 games this season.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Edward Olivares: Out of lineup Saturday
Olivares isn't in the Royals' lineup Saturday against the Astros. Despite putting together a four-game hitting streak, Olivares will take a seat to begin Saturday's contest. Nelson Velazquez will serve as Kansas City's designated hitter while Drew Waters starts in right field with Kyle Isbel in center.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Edward Olivares: Picks up steal in win
Olivares went 1-for-2 with a walk, an RBI, a stolen base and a run scored in Friday's 7-5 win over the Astros. Olivares has hit safely in nine of his last 10 games, going 12-for-34 (.353) in that span. The outfielder is seeing steady playing time between designated hitter and left field, albeit not in an everyday role. He has a .266/.323/.447 slash line with 10 home runs, 11 thefts, 32 RBI, 45 runs scored, 21 doubles and four triples through 100 games this season.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Edward Olivares: Registers 10th steal
Olivares went 1-for-4 with one RBI and a stolen base in Wednesday's 6-2 win over the Guardians. Olivares has returned with a vengeance since he was recalled from Triple-A Omaha at the beginning of September. He's gone 17-for-45 (.378) with four home runs and 11 RBI over 14 contests, and he picked up his first steal of the month Wednesday. The outfielder is up to a .264/.318/.444 slash line with 10 homers, 10 thefts, 31 RBI and 44 runs scored over 99 contests this season, though he's also added 21 doubles and four triples across 358 plate appearances.... Royals' Edward Olivares: Takes seat Monday
Olivares is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Guardians. Olivares will hit the bench for the series opener after he had started in seven of the past eight games while going 8-for-25 with a home run, two doubles, three walks, four RBI and three runs. He'll cede his spot in the lineup to Nelson Velazquez, who will bat out of the cleanup spot as the Royals' designated hitter.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Edward Olivares: Power surge continues
Olivares went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Saturday's 5-1 loss to the Blue Jays. He spoiled Kevin Gausman's shutout bid by taking the right-hander deep in the fifth inning. Olivares has a career-high 10 homers in 91 games on the season, but four of them have come in his last five contests, a stretch in which he's gone 6-for-14 (.429) with seven RBI.... See More ... Royals' Edward Olivares: Sent to Triple-A
The Royals optioned Olivares to Triple-A Omaha on Sunday. Olivares has been slumping at the plate recently, putting up just a .638 OPS in 34 plate appearances since the start of August. As a result, he'll head to the minors in order to get back on track, making room for Drew Waters to return from the bereavement list.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Edward Olivares: Sitting against righty again
Olivares is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Red Sox. Olivares will sit out for the third time in four games, with all of those absences from the lineup coming versus right-handed pitching. Though Olivares has seen more starts at designated hitter than any other Royals player since the All-Star break, manager Matt Quatraro seems content to rotate a number of players at that lineup spot rather than making Olivares a fixture at the position.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Edward Olivares: Notches steal Tuesday
Olivares went 2-for-5 with a stolen base in Tuesday's 9-3 win over the Red Sox. Olivares' playing time has been a bit shaky lately. He's gone eight games without an RBI and 24 contests without a home run, hitting just .229 with six RBI and six doubles in that longer span. The outfielder is slashing .250/.302/.408 with six homers, nine steals, 19 RBI and 36 runs scored through 81 contests overall. The Royals seem content to have Olivares be the primary designated hitter, but there's been little hesitation to rotate other players in that spot when they need to rest their legs.... See More ... Jason Mackey@JMackeyPG17M agoThis can’t possibly be good enough, right? Another blown lead and bad loss. An extended stretch of the season that absolutely should be better. My Pirates column sorting out a bunch of frustration: https://t.co/qkZJdMzkuh

Jason Mackey@JMackeyPG4H agoPirates fall, 7-6. Blow a five-run lead for a 2nd straight day. Had a grand slam (Bart, 2nd in as many days), QS from Paul Skenes. Can't hold it. Same story as last night. Drop series to the Giants. Now 23-28. Bullpen with a 5.66 ERA in May. Awful loss.
-
Alex Stumpf@AlexJStumpf4H agoThe Pirates won game one Tuesday. They got quality starts from their stud rookies Jared Jones and Paul Skenes the next two games. The offense hit a grand slam in both of those games. The Pirates lose the series to the Giants, this time by a 7-6 final.
-
Jason Mackey@JMackeyPG4H agoOnly two teams -- none in the National League -- have a worse bullpen ERA than the Pirates (5.75) in May entering the ninth inning.
-
Jason Mackey@JMackeyPG4H agoQuality starts from their stud young pitchers. Five-run leads. Grand slams in each game. Pirates are on the verge of going 0-2 the past two days in such a setting, as Aroldis Chapman -- their $10.5 million setup man -- allows a single up the middle. Now 7-6 Giants.
-
Jason Mackey@JMackeyPG4H agoTrouble city for Pirates bullpen. Stratton allows a three-run homer to Matt Chapman, now a double to Jorge Soler. It's 6-5 Pirates ... but tenuous. Nobody out.

Jason Mackey@JMackeyPG5H agoJoey Bart hitting .333 (8 for 21) over the past 6 GP. Now has 4 HR and 12 RBI in 21 overall games with Pirates. OPS up to .858. Has been a very good and timely addition with Yasmani Grandal and Jason Delay injuries, as well as Henry Davis' slow start.

Jason Mackey@JMackeyPG5H agoPirates now have an MLB-high four grand slams this season. Because, of course, well, baseball.

Jason Mackey@JMackeyPG5H agoJoey Bart, slammage against his former team. Pirates take a 5-1 lead.

Jason Mackey@JMackeyPG6H agoPirates get a leadoff triple and can't score. Geesh. Triolo 63. Tellez strikeout looking. Bart 63. Can't happen. The Rowdy vitriol has reached Austin Hedges level ugly. May have surpassed it, honestly, after he watched this pitch for strike three: https://t.co/0OE9ctljW5
