College football scores, rankings, highlights: Alabama, Ohio State dominate ahead of rivalry matchups

As Week 12 of the 2023 college football season comes to a close, the top four teams in the College Football Playoff Rankings all still remain unscathed after No. 1 Georgia, No. 2 Ohio State, No. 3 Michigan and No. 4 Florida State prevailed in their respective matchups. While chaos has yet to strike among that group, the penultimate Saturday of the regular season -- even amid all the "cupcake" games for some contenders -- wasn't dry on storylines.

The ACC Championship Game matchup is set after No. 10 Louisville held off Miami to clinch its spot against Florida State. Speaking of the Seminoles, they are now suddenly dealing with quarterback questions after star signal caller Jordan Travis suffered a serious lower-body injury against North Alabama. Elsewhere, No. 5 Washington clinched its spot in the Pac-12 Championship Game after outlasting No. 11 Oregon State, keeping the Huskies undefeated and right in the thick of the CFP discussion. No. 21 Kansas State's dreams of a repeat Big 12 title aren't dead either after the Wildcats rallied to beat No. 25 Kansas, although they will still need some help.

CBS Sports was there every step of the way to update you with the latest scores, highlights and storylines throughout the evening.

The penultimate week of the college football regular season can tend to be underwhelming, but the 2023 iteration delivered with chaos and competitive games across the board. No. 1 Georgia and No. 5 Washington passed difficult road tests, while No. 3 Michigan and No. 4 Florida State ultimately pulled out of lookahead spots.

Still, the top 10 remain untouched once again as only nine power conference teams remain with zero or one loss. Missouri needed some late heroics from quarterback Brady Cook to topple Florida, while Washington's Michael Penix Jr. made Heisman-like plays despite lacking numbers to keep the Huskies unbeaten.

Projecting newest top 25 after Week 12

The College Football Playoff picture could not be more difficult to predict as we enter the final week of the regular season with five teams from Power Five conferences currently  undefeated with 11-0 records. Luckily, projecting the new AP Top 25 poll is a bit easier as those rankings are not limited to just four spots, but the Week 12 results are shaping up to provide a shake up in the order of those undefeated teams.

Washington got put outside its comfort zone on a big stage Saturday night, playing against a tough Oregon State opponent in the driving rain in Corvallis, Oregon. Michael Penix Jr. did not have his usual production in terms of yards or completion percentage, but the Huskies made enough plays -- and got some strong defensive resilience -- to remain unbeaten in a 22-20 win.

That is the kind of win that answers questions for voters who were downgrading Washington even as it racked up ranked wins, and we're projecting that the quality victory against the Beavers is enough to overcome the slight margin that Florida State held over Washington for No. 4.

Harrison Mevis does it again

Final: Missouri 33, Florida 31

The legend of Missouri's "thicker kicker" Harrison Mevis continued to grow Saturday night as he made a go-ahead kick from 30 yards out with 7 seconds left to lift Missouri to a 33-31 win over Florida. The Gators had Mizzou in a fourth-and-17 from their own 33-yard line. But Brady Cook somehow found Luther Burden for a gain of 27 to keep the drive alive. From there, an 11-yard pass to Mekhi Miller and a 16-yard completion to Mookie Cooper positioned Mevis for a chip shot. Crushing loss for Florida, which lost quarterback Graham Mertz to injury in the third quarter. The Gators battled back with redshirt freshman reserver Max Brown, but their defense couldn't hold with the game on the line.

Washington survives

Final: Washington 22, Oregon State 20

What. A. Game.

Washington stopped Oregon State's potential game-winning drive with a fourth down stop with less than three minutes remaining and the Huskies were able to run out the clock after that. The win punches a ticket to the Pac-12 title game, where they're likely to face Oregon. UW extended its win streak to 18 consecutive games dating back to last season, which only trails two-time reigning national champion Georgia.

K-State makes it 15 straight vs. KU

FINAL: No. 21 Kansas State 31, No. 25 Kansas 27

Fueled by a three-touchdown performance from quarterback Will Howard, K-State completes the comeback in the Sunflower Showdown, rallying from a 15-point second-half deficit to keep its Big 12 Championship Game hopes afloat. The Wildcats will need to take care of business against Iowa State next Saturday and hope that either Oklahoma or Oklahoma State stumbles since K-State lost head-to-head to first place Texas. For the Jayhawks, it's a tough one to swallow as running back Devin Neal's three-touchdown performance isn't enough to pick up an elusive win in the rivalry series. Kansas State has now won 15 in a row dating back to the 2009 campaign.

Oregon State and Washington down to the wire

End 3Q: Washington 22, Oregon State 17

Oregon State controlled the time of possession in the third quarter to gain momentum heading into the final period in regulation. The Beavers put together a 16-play, 78-yard drive that lasted nearly 10 minutes to cut the UW lead to one possession. Oregon State RB Damien Martinez has been huge tonight and has 114 yards on 21 carries with a pair of touchdowns.

Graham Mertz to the locker room

Start 4Q: Missouri 23, Florida 21

Florida quarterback Graham Mertz went to the locker room late in the third quarter with what appeared to be a shoulder injury as the Gators are locked in a tight battle with Mizzou on the road. He's been great this season after transferring in from Wisconsin. Redshirt freshman Max Brown is in, making his fifth appearance. The Gators are not deep at QB, so it could be a rocky ride down the stretch in a hostile situation. Brown ranked as a three-star prospect in the Class of 2022 and redshirted last year.

Will Howard puts K-State back on top

5:33 4Q: No. 21 Kansas State 31, No. 25 Kansas 27

This one has suddenly tilted in Kansas State's favor. The Wildcats retook the lead on a 15-yard touchdown run by quarterback Will Howard before K-State's defense stood strong on the ensuing drive, forcing Kansas into its third turnover of the night. The Jayhawks entered the red zone, but the drive ultimately ended in an interception when they opted to go for it on fourth down. K-State has scored 15 unanswered since trailing 27-16 earlier in the third quarter, and that blocked extra-point sequence in the first half is looming especially large -- the game likely tied otherwise.

Jayden Daniels keeping Heisman candidacy alive

Halftime: LSU 35, Georgia State 14

LSU turned it on in the second quarter after being tied 14-14 with Georgia State. Jayden Daniels is up to 282 yards passing with four touchdowns and also has 57 yards rushing with a TD on the ground. He is quite literally the offense for the Tigers and is doing nothing to hurt his Heisman hopes. Without a conference title game to play in, he'll need to finish the regular season strong and is certainly taking care of business tonight.

Huskies lead at the break

Halftime: Washington 22, Oregon State 10

After 30 minutes in Corvallis, Oregon, the road team is taking a 12 point lead into the locker room. Washington defensive back Jabbar Muhammad is having an excellent half thus far and he ended the second quarter with an interception. Muhammad has been the MVP of the UW defense because of his excellent coverage when being targeted by Oregon State quarterback DJ Uiagalelei. The weather is something to keep an eye on in the second half because of all the drops through the first two quarters of play.

Kansas RB Devin Neal records hat trick

Early 3Q: No. 25 Kansas 27, No. 12 Kansas 16

Devin Neal continues to be that guy for the Jayhawks tonight as his third rushing touchdown of the game gives Kansas its largest edge yet against rival Kansas State. It's not as if Neal's rushing numbers are exactly off the charts either -- he's only registered 87 yards rushing on 10 carries. But between his efficiency and a strong showing by third-string quarterback Cole Ballard, who is starting in place of an injured Jason Bean, the Jayhawks offense is producing. Ballard is 9 of 11 passing for 142 yards and a touchdown, and there's plenty of time for him to do more damage as Kansas looks to snap a 14-game losing streak in the series.

Georgia State's Marcus Carroll ties it up vs. LSU

Early 3Q: LSU 14, Georgia State 14

Georgia State's Marcus Carroll just scampered 44 yards for a game-tying touchdown early in the third quarter as the Panthers put a scare into LSU. Jayden Daniels has scored touchdowns as a passer and runner as the Tigers try to keep things on the rails here for his Heisman campaign with less than six quarters left in the regular season. But LSU is in a fight here vs. its Sun Belt foe during Senior Night at Tiger Stadium.

Cody Schrader doing his thing

Late 2Q: Missouri 10, Florida 7

Cody Schrader is back at it. A week after torching Tennessee, he's got a 42-yard touchdown run to his credit in the first half against Florida. He is the first Missouri player since 2011 to gain at least 100 yards rushing in four straight games. The Gators are hanging in CoMo, however, as they seek one final victory to reach bowl eligibility. UF got on the board early after a 61-yard Graham Mertz to Ricky Pearsall completion set up a score.

Rainy Pac-12 battle

End 1Q: Washington 9, Oregon State 7

It's raining hard in Corvallis, Oregon, for a critical Pac-12 matchup between Oregon State and Washington. The first quarter featured the West Coast teams exchanging touchdowns before Oregon State committed a serious blunder during a punt near the end of the quarter. The Beavers long snapper sailed the football over the punters head and it went into the end zone for a safety. Washington can clinch a spot in the Pac-12 title game with a road win.

Florida State pulling away

Half: No. 4 Florida State 24, North Alabama 13

Florida State was on the ropes early in its game against North Alabama. NAU took a quick 13-0 lead after scoring on two-straight drives in the first quarter. The Seminoles have largely recovered from that point, though, ripping off a 24-0 scoring run to take a more commanding lead into halftime. Led by backup quarterback Tate Rodemaker, Florida State scored a touchdown on each of its last three offensive possessions in the first half.

There's a reason Rodemaker is in the game, though. Florida State star quarterback Jordan Travis left the game late in the first quarter with a gruesome leg injury. He was carted off the field and immediately loaded onto an ambulance. That could be a tragic end to an otherwise stellar year for one of college football's best players.

Fireworks in the Sunflower Showdown

Early 2Q: No. 25 Kansas 13, No. 21 Kansas State 9

Kansas running back Devin Neal has shown up with two rushing touchdowns already tonight against rival Kansas State, but the Jayhawks only lead by four points after a mishap on the extra point following Neal's second trip to the end zone. Not only was KU's extra-point attempt blocked, but the Wildcats recovered and took it all the way for two points. Depending on how this one unfolds in Lawrence, Kansas, that sequence could prove pivotal down the stretch. This is a must-win game for both teams in the Big 12 championship race, though the winner will still need some assistance to reach the conference title game Arlington, Texas.

'Horns, 'Clones enter pivotal Big 12 showdown

The urgency is clear for both sides in a game with major Big 12 Championship Game implications. No. 7 Texas owns a one-game lead over a logjam of others in second place, one of those schools being Iowa State. The Longhorns will be in tremendous shape to reach Arlington if they get out of Ames, Iowa, unscathed, but that could be easier said than done. Although Texas sits 9-1 on the year, the Longhorns have played with fire more than once in the past month, and they now enter a venue they haven't won at since 2017. Iowa State knows well that it must win this game to have any realistic shot at playing for a league title, and the Cyclones would love nothing more than to kill Texas' College Football Playoff hopes -- and, potentially, the Longhorns' Big 12 title aspirations -- in the last scheduled meeting between the foes.

FSU star QB Travis carted off field

Florida State quarterback Jordan Travis suffered a lower-body injury late during the first quarter of the No. 4 Seminoles' Week 12 home game against North Alabama. The injury was severe enough where Travis was forced to be carted from the field. FSU's star signal-caller had his left leg put into an air cast after being attended to by trainers as virtually every Seminoles teammate came onto the field in support of their leader.

Travis was replaced by Tate Rodemaker Jr. at quarterback. The Seminoles trailed 13-0 at the time of his exit. FSU, which is undefeated and already clinched a spot in the ACC Championship Game, is looking to close in on a College Football Playoff berth after checking in at No. 4 in the latest CFP Rankings.

UCLA rolls past USC

Final: UCLA 38, USC 20

The Bruins come out on top at the Coliseum for the second time in as many visits, never trailing once in an 18-point victory over top rival USC. Trojans quarterback Caleb Williams had nearly twice as many passing yards as UCLA quarterback Ethan Garbers, but the Bruins signal-caller was far more efficient. Garbers had three touchdown passes and was free of any interceptions while Williams only had a single touchdown pass and was picked off once. With that, the Pac-12 chapter on the rivalry closes as the L.A. schools now get ready to make their move to the Big Ten next offseason. There's going to be a lot of soul-searching for coach Lincoln Riley and USC as they now exit the regular season 7-5 and unranked after entering 2023 with national championship aspirations.

No. 5 Huskies face major road test

No. 5 Washington remains unblemished, but the Huskies haven't exactly been asserting their will against opponents -- including some Pac-12 bottom-feeders -- in recent weeks. That makes a road trip to No. 11 Oregon State a dangerous one for coach Kalen DeBoer's group. The Beavers need to win this game to keep their Pac-12 title game hopes afloat, and it's a bit personal, too. This is the last scheduled meeting between the Pacific Northwest foes before the Pac-12 as we know it breaks apart, putting Oregon State and Washington State in a precarious position within the sport's landscape. While USC and UCLA's Big Ten defections were the initial domino in the Pac-12's breakup, Washington and Oregon's decisions to follow suit this past summer proved to be the dagger. Only Oregon State and Washington State failed to be picked up by another power conference.

Clemson in complete control

Early 4Q: Clemson 31, No. 20 North Carolina 14

Clemson is closing in on its second win against a ranked opponent in the last three weeks. The Tigers just took a three-score lead against North Carolina thanks to a 21-yard kick from Jonathan Weitz. The Tigers have largely dominated the second half. They've now scored on three-straight drives since punting the ball to start the third quarter. By comparison, the Tar Heels have scored just once since the second half began and have had their other possessions end in a punt and a turnover on downs. The Tigers are getting whatever they want on the ground, 237 yards and three touchdowns rushing. Clemson is averaging 5.4 yards per carry.

Georgia cruises to win

FINAL: No. 1 Georgia 38, No. 18 Tennessee 10

The Bulldogs racked up 472 yards and the defense only let the Volunteers convert two of their 11 opportunities on third down as the two-time reigning national champions extended their winning streak to 28 -- tied for the longest in SEC history. Quarterback Carson Beck tossed three touchdown passes and Kendall Milton churned out 66 yards on the ground in what was a suffocating performance for coach Kirby Smart's crew. The defense was stunned on the first play of the game as Volunteers' running back Jaylen Wright went 75 yards to the house, but the raucous crowd at Neyland Stadium was unable to rattle the Dawgs from that moment on.

Ranked Sunflower Showdown

It's been a minute since Kansas and Kansas State were both ranked for their annual rivalry game. It last happened in 1995, when No. 14 K-State cruised 41-7 home win against No. 6 Kansas in what marked the final Big Eight matchup between the schools. Twenty-eight years later, it's a de facto Big 12 title elimination game, though the winner will still need outside help for a chance at earning a spot in Arlington. Both Kansas schools lost head-to-head matchups against first-place Texas in addition to Oklahoma State, who is part of the four-way tie for second place that also involves the Wildcats. The Jayhawks were also part of that second-place logjam before suffering an upset home loss to Texas Tech last Saturday.

Bruins rolling at the Coliseum

Late 3Q: UCLA 28, USC 13

UCLA is in control and threatening again as the third quarter nears its end, leading rival USC by two touchdowns on the road. The Bruins came up big with a fumble recovery that was returned for a touchdown earlier in the quarter, putting them up 18 before the Trojans cut the deficit to 15 with a field goal. Although neither team has had the season it envisioned after both were in Pac-12 title contention for last year's matchup, UCLA may be on the brink of having bragging rights over USC for the next year as the longtime rivals prepare to make their way to the Big Ten. Trojans quarterback Caleb Williams has passed for more than 300 yards, but he's been limited to just one touchdown pass.

Georgia is dominating on Rocky Top

END Q3: No. 1 Georgia 38, No. 18 Tennessee 10

The Bulldogs are absolutely cruising thanks to a tremendous performance from first-year starting quarterback Carson Beck. The junior is 23 of 28 for 275 yards and three touchdowns. Beck has developed into one of the top quarterbacks in the country, and this is another statement game for the Jacksonville, Florida, native. However, star tight end Brock Bowers tweaked the same ankle that he injured against Florida midway through the frame. He stayed in the game, but didn't seem to have the same burst.

Arizona dismantles Utah

FINAL: No. 17 Arizona 42, No. 22 Utah 18

The Wildcats completely pick apart the two-time reigning Pac-12 champions and have now won eight games in a season for the first time since winning 10 contests and finishing as the conference runner-up back in 2014. Arizona quarterback Noah Fifta passed for 253 yards and two touchdowns on a day where the Wildcats were out-gained by the Utes but still managed for a commanding 24-point victory. Quarterbacks Jayden de Laura and Tetairoa McMillan also each had a touchdown pass in the win. Arizona won the turnover battle 2-0, forcing Utah quarterback Bryson Barnes into two interceptions. All said, the Wildcats seem well on their way to a top 25 finish, poised to rise even higher in the College Football Playoff rankings Tuesday after securing a ranked win.

Bo Nix building Heisman case

Oregon star quarterback Bo Nix is off to a very hot start against Arizona State. Nix finished the first half of play by completing 22 of 27 passes for 381 yards and six touchdown passes to four different receivers. It's unlikely Nix will play most of the second half because of the 42-0 lead the Ducks built over the Sun Devils. On the season, Nix has thrown 35 touchdown passes and should be considered one of the favorites to win the Heisman Trophy heading into the final weeks of the season.

Clemson up at the half

Half: Clemson 14, No. 20 North Carolina 7

Clemson is quietly enjoying a late-season Renaissance. The Tigers have played some of their best football lately, and if the first half is any indication they could be closing in on another win against a top-25 team. Clemson certainly got some help to take its half time lead. It looked as if Tigers quarterback Cade Klubnik made a huge mistake near the end of the second quarter, sailing a pass into his own end zone that was caught by a North Carolina defensive back. However, UNC linebacker Cedric Gray was called for roughing the passer, giving the Tigers an automatic first down and -- more importantly -- wiping the interception off the board. Klubnik gave his team the lead a few plays later with a 3-yard rushing touchdown.

Clemson could have a bigger lead, as well. Running back Will Shipley fumbled the ball at North Carolina's 5-yard line with just over two minutes left to play. North Carolina made its fair share of mistakes. Running back Omarion Hampton had a 64-yard run in the first quarter that looked like a touchdown at first, but Clemson cornerback Nate Wiggins forced a fumble right before he broke the plane. The Tar Heels failed to score on their last five drives of the first half. Two of those ended in turnovers.

Caleb Williams bomb gets USC on the board

Early 2Q: UCLA 14, USC 7

USC is finally showing some life after an ugly first quarter at home against UCLA. Trojans quarterback Caleb Williams connected on a deep pass to Brenden Rice, who took it all the way for the 74-yard touchdown that got USC on the board. That may provide a spark for a USC team that would love nothing more than to at least get the win over its arch rival amid a disappointing 7-4 mark in the Trojans' second season under coach Lincoln Riley. In a bit of scheduling quirk, this is the last game of the regular season for a USC team that opened in Week 0. There is still a remaining bowl game, but the Trojans' destination is to be determined.

Clemson defense makes spectacular save

North Carolina came just inches short of taking a 14-0 lead against Clemson, but some spectacular effort from the Tigers' defense kept that from happening. Tar Heels running back Omarion Hampton broke a through the right side of his offensive line and raced into open field, thanks to a key block from wide receiver J.J. Jones. It looked like Hampton was home free, but Clemson cornerback Nate Wiggins -- who was initially blocked by Jones to spring Hampton -- didn't give up on the play. He sprinted after Hampton and, right before Hampton broke the goal line, dove after Hampton and used his arm to force the ball loose.

Officials initially gave Hampton the touchdown, review showed that Wiggins forced a fumble right before the football broke the plane. It rolled out of bounds, resulting in a touchback and possession for Clemson.
