The Mountaineers will begin another West Virginia basketball coaching search only a year after completing one. Darian DeVries turned Drake into a mid-major powerhouse before accepting the head coaching position at West Virginia. However, he accepted the Indiana basketball coaching job and will leave the Mountaineers after narrowly missing the NCAA Tournament in his only season in Morgantown. Athletic director Wren Baker will be tasked with overseeing the search for the fourth West Virginia basketball coach in as many years. Who are the top West Virginia basketball coaching candidates and how can the Mountaineers make a hire that sticks? If you love the Mountaineers, or just want to know who will call the shots for West Virginia basketball in the future, be sure to see what the proven team of insiders are saying at EerSports, the 247Sports affiliate that covers West Virginia.

Top West Virginia basketball coach candidates

One name the staff has identified as a potential target is Utah State head coach Jerrod Calhoun. The 43-year-old already has 13 years of experience as a head coach under his belt after spending five years at Fairmont State, seven years at Youngstown State and one season at Utah State. Most recently, Calhoun guided the Aggies to the 2025 NCAA Tournament, where Utah State lost 72-47 in the first round against UCLA.

He's been successful at every head coaching stop, but perhaps more important is his tie to West Virginia. Calhoun was an assistant under Bob Huggins from 2007-2012, when Huggins led the Mountaineers to five consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. Calhoun was on the bench for West Virginia's second-ever Final Four run in 2010 and he proved himself capable of using the transfer portal to quickly maintain a winning program this season at Utah State. See more candidates at EerSports.
