  • Rangers' Travis Jankowski: Opportunity drying up

Jankowski started at designated hitter and went 1-for-4 in Wednesday's 4-0 win over Cleveland.

Jankowski made his third consecutive start and fourth in the last five games, but his opportunities may be coming to close. Evan Carter (lower back stiffness) is expected to return to the lineup Friday against the Angels, which is expected to move Jankowski back to a bench role. Additionally, the Angels' projected starter Friday is lefty Tyler Anderson, which would likely preclude Jankowski from making a fourth straight start.

  • Rangers' Leody Taveras: Triples, scores in win

Taveras went 1-for-4 with a triple and run scored in Wednesday's 4-0 win over the Guardians.

Taveras scored the Rangers first (and winning) run when his fifth-inning triple immediately preceded a Marcus Semien home run. Taveras has been rolling since late April, posting a .323 average (20-for-62) and .948 OPS with eight walks, two steals, three doubles, one triple, three home runs, eight RBI and 16 runs over the last 18 games.

  • Rangers' Adolis Garcia: Slugs 10th homer

Garcia went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in Wednesday's 4-0 win over the Guardians.

Garcia has homered in back-to-back games, giving him 10 long balls on the year. Prior to Tuesday, he had gone 19 games without a multi-hit effort, batting a meager .153 (11-for-72) in that span. That slump took the shine off his hot start to the campaign, but the outfielder is still slashing .259/.306/.494 with 34 RBI, 23 runs scored, four stolen bases and nine doubles over 44 contests this season.

  • Rangers' Marcus Semien: Homers in Wednesday's win

Semien went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Wednesday's 4-0 win over the Guardians.

Semien's fifth-inning blast was ultimately all the run support Jon Gray needed to carry the Rangers to a win. Through 15 games in May, Semien is 21-for-68 (.309) with three homers, 11 RBI and 12 runs scored. The second baseman has just one stolen base on the year after reaching double-digits in each of the previous eight full-length seasons, but the rest of his numbers are strong. Semien is at a .276/.320/.464 slash line with eight homers, 31 RBI, 33 runs scored, 10 doubles and a triple of 206 plate appearances on the year.

  • Rangers' Jon Gray: Keeps rolling Wednesday

Gray (2-1) allowed four hits and two walks while striking out three over 6.1 shutout innings to earn the win Wednesday versus the Guardians.

Gray has strung together four straight quality starts after posting just one over his first six outings this season. During his hot streak, the right-hander has allowed just four runs while posting a 20:3 K:BB over 27.1 innings. Gray is at a 2.08 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 52:14 K:BB through 52 innings across 10 appearances (nine starts) in 2024. He'll look to keep it up in his next start, tentatively projected to come on the road against the Phillies.

  • Rangers' Josh Jung: Plays catch Wednesday

Jung (wrist) played catch on the field prior to Wednesday's game against the Guardians, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.

Playing catch amounts to Jung's first known baseball activity since he underwent surgery April 2 to address a fractured right wrist. While being able to throw with his surgically repaired wrist is a step in the right direction, hitting high-velocity pitching will be the real test for Jung. He still looks to be a week or more away from doing that, as Rangers general manager Chris Young previously said that Jung is facing an 8-to-10-week recovery timeline after more damage to his wrist than expected was detected when surgery was performed, per MLB.com. Fantasy managers shouldn't bank on Jung returning from the IL until around early-to-mid June in a best-case scenario.

  • Rangers' Jack Leiter: Headed back to minors

The Rangers optioned Leiter to Triple-A Round Rock on Wednesday.

Texas won't immediately replace Leiter in its rotation, but the rookie right-hander will cede his spot on the 26-man active roster to right-hander Shaun Anderson, who was called up from Round Rock and will provide some length out of the bullpen in the short term. Leiter's demotion comes one day after he failed to escape the second inning in the Rangers' 7-4 loss to the Guardians. He's labored in each of his first three big-league starts, giving up 17 earned runs on 18 hits and six walks while striking out seven across 9.1 innings.

  • Rangers' Shaun Anderson: Back in majors with Texas

The Rangers selected Anderson's contract from Triple-A Round Rock on Wednesdday.

He'll make his return to the big leagues for the first time since the 2022 season, when he made a one-inning relief appearance for Toronto. After spending the 2023 campaign overseas in Korea, Anderson returned stateside and signed a minor-league deal with Texas in April. He had been working as a starter for Round Rock prior to his promotion, turning in a 2.53 ERA and 1.04 WHIP while striking out 22 over 21.1 innings. Anderson will operate as a long-relief option initially, but he could be called upon to join the rotation if Nathan Eovaldi (groin) or Dane Dunning (shoulder) aren't ready to return from the 15-day injured list by the time the Rangers next require a fifth starter May 25 in Minnesota.

  • Rangers' Max Scherzer: Moves to 60-day IL

The Rangers transferred Scherzer (back/arm) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Wednesday.

Scherzer surprisingly avoided the 60-day IL to begin the season after the Rangers were encouraged enough by his recovery from his Dec. 15 back surgery during spring training to keep the door open for him to make his 2024 debut before May 27. Though Scherzer remained on track to meet the Rangers' goal as recently as a few weeks ago, it became clear that his absence would extend into June after he dealt with a thumb issue coming out of his first rehab start April 24 with Triple-A Round Rock. He hasn't been able to do much activity ever since, but he'll play light catch Wednesday while he contends with a nerve issue in addition to ramping back up from his herniated disc surgery. Fortunately for Scherzer, Jeff Wilson of RangersToday.com relays that the right-hander has had MRIs on his triceps, elbow and neck that all returned clean, so the nerve problem is believed to be something that he'll be able to manage. The Rangers will wait and see how he responds to playing catch Wednesday before mapping out his throwing progression any futher.

  • Rangers' Max Scherzer: Will try to play catch Wednesday

Scherzer (back) will attempt to play light catch Wednesday, Jeff Wilson of RangersToday.com reports.

Scherzer is dealing with a nerve problem which has affected his throwing arm. He was given a cortisone injection in his right thumb to combat the issue, but it's something he might just have to learn to pitch through. Scherzer revealed that he underwent MRIs on his triceps, elbow and neck to make sure there wasn't something else going on, and all of those tests came back negative. The righty had begun a rehab assignment last month, but he's been shut down for a couple weeks with the nerve issue. Scherzer initially went on the IL after offseaon back surgery. There's no timetable for his return to the Rangers' rotation.

  • Rangers' Yerry Rodriguez: Provides needed innings

Rodriguez threw four scoreless innings of relief in Tuesday's 7-4 loss to the Guardians.

Starter Jack Leiter was bounced after 1.2 innings, and Texas needed its 29th-ranked bullpen (5.14 ERA) to get through the day. And they got it from Jonathan Hernandez (2.1 scoreless innings) and Rodriguez, who faced the minimum over four innings -- he hit a batter but followed it with a double play.

  • Rangers' Travis Jankowski: Makes third start in four games

Jankowski started at designated hitter and went 1-for-3 with a double in Tuesday's 7-4 loss to Cleveland.

Jankowski started for the third time in four games, as Evan Carter (back) remained unavailable. On top of Carter's absence, Wyatt Langford's hamstring injury has created a path to at-bats for the seldom-used Jankowski, who's taken advantage of the increased plate appearances. Since May 2, Jankowski is 9-for-31 (.290) with a stolen base, a double, five RBI and three runs scored over 12 games.

  • Rangers' Corey Seager: Goes yard again

Seaver went 1-for-4 with a solo home run during Tuesday's 7-4 loss to Cleveland.

Seager took advantage of the Globe Life Field roof being open, swatting a solo home run off Ben Lively in the third inning. The shortstop has hit three home runs in his last eight games and is batting .267 with six RBI and an 11.4 percent K rate during that stretch.

  • Rangers' Adolis Garcia: Snaps out of funk

Garcia went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and an additional run scored during Tuesday's 7-4 loss to the Guardians.

Garcia entered Tuesday's game batting .154 in May but delivered his first homer since April 28 and his first multi-hit game since April 21. Even with the cold spell, Garcia is slashing .247/.297/.449 across 175 plate appearances with a .202 ISO, numbers which aren't too far off his 2022 and 2023 numbers.

  • Rangers' Jack Leiter: Yanked after 1.2 frames

Leiter (0-1) took the loss Tuesday against Cleveland, allowing six runs on three hits and three walks across 1.2 innings. He struck out one.

Leiter's struggles continued Tuesday, hitting a batter, dishing out a walk and throwing a pair of wild pitches in the first inning before giving up six runs and being pulled before finishing the second frame. In the second, Leiter allowed a pair of extra-base hits: a two-RBI double to Bo Naylor and a three-run home run to Josh Naylor. With Dane Dunning (shoulder) nearing a return and Leiter posting a 16.39 ERA across three starts, Tuesday's start could be the rookie's last.

  • Rangers' Owen White: Returns to minors

The Rangers optioned White to Triple-A Round Rock on Tuesday.

The right-hander surrendered three runs over one inning Monday against Cleveland and has now been demoted to make room for Tuesday's starter Jack Leiter. White has surrendered six earned runs in his two MLB appearances this season and has a 5.70 ERA over 23.2 frames at Triple-A.

  • Rangers' Jack Leiter: Promoted for Tuesday's start

The Rangers recalled Leiter from Triple-A Round Rock ahead of his start against the Guardians on Tuesday.

The right-hander is back with Texas for his third start in the big leagues. Leiter's first two outings haven't gone particularly well, as he's given up 13 runs (11 earned) on 15 hits with a 6:3 K:BB over 7.2 innings. It may only be a spot start for the 24-year-old since Nathan Eovaldi (groin) may soon be back from the injured list.
