The Royals optioned Bowlan to Triple-A Omaha on Tuesday. The move comes a day after Bowlan lased just 2.2 innings in a start versus the Blue Jays, yielding four runs on six hits and three walks. Bowlan returns to Omaha, where he's posted a 2.57 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 21:5 K:BB across 21 frames this season.... See More ... See Less

Royals' Jonathan Bowlan: Chased after 2.2 innings
Bowlan (0-1) took the loss Monday against Toronto, allowing four runs on six hits and three walks over 2.2 innings. He struck out three. Bowlan was called up to replace Alec Marsh (elbow) in the Royals rotation, making his second career start and first MLB appearance of 2024. The 27-year-old was tagged for three home runs: a two-run homer and a solo homer to Justin Turner and a solo shot to Danny Jansen. Although Marsh will miss at least one more start, it wouldn't be surprising if the Royals look to somebody other than Bowlan to fill the fifth spot in the rotation after his awful showing Monday.... Royals' Jonathan Bowlan: Called up for Monday's start
The Royals recalled Bowlan from Triple-A Omaha ahead of his scheduled start Monday in Toronto. Kansas City optioned right-handed reliever Will Klein to Triple-A to clear a spot on the 26-man active roster for Bowlan, who will be joining the rotation as a replacement for the injured Alec Marsh (elbow). Bowlan had covered at least five innings in each of his last three starts with Omaha and owns a 2.57 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 21:5 K:BB across 21 frames at the Triple-A level for the season.... Royals' Jonathan Bowlan: Entering big-league rotation
The Royals are planning to call up Bowlan from Triple-A Omaha on Monday to start the club's series opener in Toronto, Jaylon T. Thompson of The Kansas City Star reports. Bowlan will be entering the big-league rotation as a replacement for Alec Marsh (elbow), who was placed on the 15-day injured list Thursday. The 27-year-old Bowlan previously made a spot start among his two appearances with Kansas City in 2023, but Monday will mark his 2024 MLB debut. Over 21 innings at Omaha this season, Bowlan has submitted a 2.57 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 21:5 K:BB.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Jonathan Bowlan: Optioned to Triple-A
The Royals optioned Bowlan to Triple-A Omaha on Thursday. Bowlan will head to the minors after surrendering two runs off five hits and two walks while striking out two batters in 3.1 innings during spring training. The 27-year-old righty posted a 5.24 ERA and 1.55 WHIP across 67 frames with Omaha last season, and he will likely need to show further improvement in Triple-A before the Royals bring him back to the big-league squad.... Royals' Jonathan Bowlan: Takes loss in debut
Bowlan (0-1) allowed one run on three hits and struck out two without walking a batter over two innings, taking the loss Wednesday versus the Tigers. Bowlan got the start in his debut and logged a short appearance, but the Royals' offense was shut out in the loss. The right-hander recorded a passable 105:45 K:BB over 102 innings between Double-A and Triple-A this season, but it came with a 5.91 ERA and 1.58 WHIP. Bowlan could compete for a rotation spot in 2024, but he likely needs a little more time in the minors.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Jonathan Bowlan: Debuting Wednesday
Bowlan will serve as the Royals' opening pitcher for Wednesday's game against the Tigers, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. Bowlan's start Wednesday will mark the first appearance of his major-league career. The 26-year-old righty was rather unspectacular in the minors this season, recording a 5.91 ERA and 1.58 WHIP through 102 innings between Double-A Northwest Arkansas and Triple-A Omaha. Though Rogers' report labels Bowlan as an opener, he should be able to offer more length than what's typically associated with that role, given that his most recent appearance was a six-inning start for Omaha on Sept. 16. He'll have the benefit of facing a Tigers offense that owns MLB's second-lowest team OPS (.679).... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Jonathan Bowlan: Optioned to Double-A
The Royals optioned Bowlan to Double-A Northwest Arkansas on Friday. Bowlan gave up one earned run through three innings during spring training, but a 6.92 ERA and 1.74 WHIP in Double-A last season indicate the 26-year-old righty still needs time to develop in the minors.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Jonathan Bowlan: Earns weekly honors
Bowlan was named the Texas League Pitcher of the Week on Monday. Bowlan threw five scoreless innings for Double-A Northwest Arkansas versus Springfield on Sunday. He allowed two hits and two walks while striking out two. Bowlan's made six starts at the Double-A level since returning from Tommy John surgery, though he's struggled to a 6.48 ERA, 1.60 WHIP and 18:9 K:BB over 25 innings. Sunday's outing matched his longest of the season at any level, and it may signal he's feeling more comfortable on the mound after the lengthy rehab process.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Jonathan Bowlan: Protected from Rule 5 draft
Bowlan (elbow) was added to Kansas City's 40-man roster Friday. While Bowlan made just four starts at Double-A last season, he seemed poised for a breakout campaign before needing Tommy John surgery in late-May/early-June. If he can make a full recovery, Bowlan could pitch in minor-league games before the end of the 2022 season.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Jonathan Bowlan: Tommy John surgery ordered up
The Royals announced Thursday that Bowlan is scheduled to undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery on his right elbow next week. The procedure will likely sideline Bowlan for most, if not all, of the 2022 campaign as well. The 24-year-old right-hander is viewed as one of the top pitching prospects in the organization, and he was off to a hot start at Double-A Northwest Arkansas this season. Over his four starts spanning 17 innings, Bowlan posted a 1.59 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 25:3 K:BB.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Jonathan Bowlan: Joining big-league camp
Bowland was invited to the Royals' major-league spring training Friday. Bowlan has yet to pitch above High-A, so he'll probably need some more time in the minors before being seriously considered for a roster spot. He looked quite good at that level for Wilmington in 2019, posting a 2.95 ERA and a 76:13 K:BB in 76.1 innings of work.... See More ... See Less
