  • Reds' Jacob Hurtubise: Out of lineup again Friday

Hurtubise is not in the lineup for Friday's game against the Cubs.

Hurtubise made eight straight starts from May 21-28 and batted leadoff every time the Reds faced a righty over that stretch. However, this now marks two straight games since TJ Friedl returned from the injured list that Hurtubise will begin the contest on the bench. Will Benson has shifted over to left field to accommodate Friedl in center.

  • Reds' Jacob Hurtubise: Odd man out in Friedl's return

Hurtubise is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Cardinals.

Hurtubise had made starts in the outfield in each of the last eight games and served as the Reds' leadoff man on seven occasions, but he looks set to lose out on an everyday role after Cincinnati reinstated center fielder TJ Friedl (thumb) from the 10-day injured list Wednesday. As a left-handed hitter, Hurtubise won't make for a viable platoon mate for the Reds' three lefty-hitting outfielders (Friedl, Will Benson and Jake Fraley) nor lefty-hitting designated hitter Nick Martini, so it wouldn't be surprising if Hurtubise is sent back to Triple-A Louisville before long if his playing time becomes scarce. The 26-year-old has posted a .582 OPS over 39 plate appearances since getting his first big-league call-up May 13.

  • Reds' Jacob Hurtubise: Doubles, scores insurance run

Hurtubise went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored in Saturday's 3-1 win over the Dodgers.

Hurtubise led off the bottom of the sixth inning with his first extra-base hit as a major leaguer and scored on a single one batter later. The rookie, who was recently moved to the leadoff spot against right-handers, has hit safely in three straight and scored runs in three of the last four contests.

  • Reds' Jacob Hurtubise: Leading off again

Hurtubise batted leadoff and went 1-for-2 with a stolen base, an RBI and a run scored in Thursday's 6-4 extra-inning loss to San Diego.

After the Padres jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, Hurtubise made things happen for the Reds in the bottom of the frame. He was hit by a pitch then stole second base before scoring on a Jeimer Candelario triple. This was Hurtubise's third consecutive start as the leadoff batter -- all against right-handers -- and he's been removed for a pinch hitter in all three. He's 3-for-14 with three walks, one stolen base, two RBI and two runs scored over nine games since his callup. Once TJ Friedl (thumb) is back, Hurtubise's run as the leadoff batter, and maybe his time on the big-league roster, will end.

  • Reds' Jacob Hurtubise: Bats leadoff Tuesday

Hurtubise batted leadoff and went 0-for-3 with a walk in Tuesday's 2-0 win over the Padres.

Since TJ Friedl (thumb) landed on the 10-day injured list, Will Benson had handled leadoff duties against right-handers, but manager David Bell moved the rookie to the top of the order Tuesday. It's unclear if this will remain the manager's practice going forward. Hurtubise has two hits and two walks over 13 plate appearances since being called up from Triple-A Louisville.

  • Reds' Jacob Hurtubise: Batting leadoff Tuesday

Hurtubise is starting in left field and batting leadoff in Tuesday's game versus the Padres.

It's Hurtubise's fourth start in eight games since being recalled and the first time in those starts that he didn't bat ninth. With Jonathan India and Will Benson struggling and TJ Friedl (thumb) hurt again, the Reds are looking for someone to establish themselves at the leadoff spot. The odds would seem to be against Hurtubise being that guy, but he did show good on-base skills in the minors with a .434 OBP.

  • Reds' Jacob Hurtubise: Logs first MLB hit

Hurtubise started in left field and went 1-for-3 in Saturday's 4-0 loss to the Dodgers.

Hurtubise, who made his third start since being recalled last Monday, collected his first MLB hit. He's around for depth while the Reds cope with several injuries that have tested the team's depth. Outfielder TJ Friedl (thumb) landed on the IL last week, and Spencer Steer, who has been the primary left fielder, is part of the rotation at first base to help cover for the absence of Christian Encarnacion-Strand (wrist).

  • Reds' Jacob Hurtubise: Starts in left field

Hurtubise started in left field and went 0-for-2 in Tuesday's 6-2 win over the Diamondbacks.

Hurtubise, who was called up from Triple-A Louisville on Monday, made his first MLB start, giving Spencer Steer a break. The 26-year-old Hurtubise was eventually pinch hit for against a left-handed reliever. He's just the second graduate of West Point to reach the major leagues.

  • Reds' Jacob Hurtubise: Recalled by Cincinnati

The Reds recalled Hurtubise from Triple-A Louisville on Monday.

Hurtubise started the season in Triple-A after failing to make the Reds' Opening Day roster. He's gone 6-for-22 with one home run and five RBI in the minors in May, and the 26-year-old will provide outfield depth and a left-handed bat for Cincinnati after TJ Friedl was placed on the 10-day injured list Monday with a fractured left thumb.

  • Reds' Jacob Hurtubise: Still hanging around

Hurtubise is in the mix for the final roster spot, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports.

Hurtubise and Bubba Thompson, both of whom were reassigned to minor-league camp earlier this spring, are the most likely candidates for the 26th spot after the organization trimmed its roster Friday. They will travel with the team when camp breaks and participate in intrasquad scrimmages scheduled before Thursday's Opening Day matchup against Washington. The two are currently on the 40-man roster and fill an area of need in the outfield, although the club could also wait to see which players are cut from other teams.
