Marquez (elbow) will return to Denver to throw bullpen sessions during the Rockies' weekend series against the Phillies, MLB.com reports. Manager Bud Black said the team wanted to see Marquez's progress after he had been working at the team's spring training facility for the last few weeks. If things go well, Marquez could embark on a rehab assignment in the near future for the final stage of his recovery from May 2023 Tommy John surgery, but he's still not expected to be back in the big-league rotation until July.... Rockies' German Marquez: Appears in Complex League game
Marquez (elbow) gave up three earned runs on four hits and one walk over 1.2 innings in his first rehab start Friday with the Rockies' rookie-level Arizona Complex League affiliate. Marquez had been making appearances in extended spring training, but kicking off his rehab assignment in the ACL -- albeit in less-than-impressive fashion -- marks an important milestone in his recovery from the Tommy John surgery he underwent May 12, 2023. He'll continue to ramp up his pitch count in his subsequent rehab outings and could be ready to come off the 60-day IL around midseason.... See More ... See Less -
Rockies' German Marquez: Facing hitters at extended spring
Rockies manager Bud Black said April 24 that Marquez (elbow) hasn't experienced any setbacks since he resumed facing hitters at extended spring training in Arizona, MLB.com reports. Marquez opened the season on the 60-day injured list while he continues his recovery from Tommy John surgery, which he underwent May 12, 2023. Closing in on the one-year mark in his rehab program, Marquez appears to be coming along as expected, but the Rockies haven't indicated when he'll be able to resume pitching in minor-league rehab games. The team is preparing for Marquez to return from the 60-day IL at some point around midseason.... See More ... See Less -
Rockies' German Marquez: Opens season on 60-day IL
The Rockies placed Marquez (elbow) on the 60-day injured list Sunday. Marquez's move to the 60-day IL to begin the season wasn't unexpected, as the veteran right-hander is completing his recovery from May 2023 Tommy John surgery and is unlikely to be available until the second half of the 2024 campaign. The Rockies were able to open up a 40-man roster spot for newly acquired outfielder Jake Cave by placing Marquez on the 60-day IL.... See More ... See Less -
Rockies' German Marquez: Throwing off mound
Marquez (elbow) threw off a mound Friday, Patrick Lyons of TheDNVR.com reports. Marquez is ramping up his throwing program after he underwent Tommy John surgery last May. The hope is that the veteran right-hander will be ready to rejoin the Rockies' rotation at some point after the All-Star break.... See More ... See Less -
Rockies' German Marquez: Return after All-Star break likely
Rockies GM Bill Schmidt said Sunday that Marquez (elbow) isn't expected to be activated from the injured list until after the All-Star break, Patrick Lyons of TheDNVR.com reports. The 28-year-old underwent Tommy John surgery in mid-May last year, so a return during the first half of 2024 was never likely. Marquez had a 4.95 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 150:63 K:BB over 181.2 innings in 2022 and is likely to have some limitations once back with the big club after the break.... See More ... See Less -
Rockies' German Marquez: Inks two-year extension
Colorado signed Marquez (elbow) to a two-year, $20 million contract extension Friday. This new deal will cover the 2024-2025 seasons, so Marquez is no longer headed into free agency this winter and now carries some financial security into the remaining several months of his rehabilitation from Tommy John surgery. He underwent the reconstructive elbow procedure in May of this year and is not expected to return to a major-league mound until the second half of next season. The 28-year-old right-hander owns a 4.41 ERA in 1,016 career big-league innings, all with the Rockies. His career ERA away from Coors Field is 3.80.... See More ... See Less -
Rockies' German Marquez: Moved to 60-day IL
The Rockies placed Marquez (elbow) on the 60-day injured list Friday. Marquez underwent Tommy John surgery last week, so a trip to the 60-day IL was inevitable. He will be shut down for the rest of the season and likely won't return until the back half of the 2024 campaign, although it's not entirely clear who he might be pitching for by then -- the Rockies hold a $16 million club option for 2023 on Marquez, which they could decline even if they then end up re-signing him to a more team-friendly deal.... Rockies' German Marquez: Undergoes Tommy John surgery
Rockies manager Bud Black told reporters before Friday's game against the Phillies that Marquez (elbow) had undergone Tommy John reconstructive surgery earlier in the day, Kyle Newman of The Denver Post reports. Marquez underwent the procedure in the Denver area. The right-hander will miss the rest of the 2023 season and likely won't be ready to pitch until the summer of 2024 at the earliest.... See More ... Rockies' German Marquez: Getting Tommy John surgery
Marquez (elbow) revealed Tuesday that he needs Tommy John surgery, Danielle Allentuck of The Denver Gazette reports. Marquez expressed concern that he might require the reconstructive elbow surgery when he was placed on the injured list last Friday, and now his worst fears have been realized. There's no set date yet for the procedure, but it's going to knock him out until at least the midway point of the 2024 season. Colorado will almost certainly decline his $16 million club option in November, making him a free agent with several more months of rehab ahead. It's a brutal blow for the 28-year-old right-hander and for the Rockies, who may have looked to finally trade him this summer before he suffered the serious elbow injury.... See More ... See Less -
Rockies' German Marquez: Tommy John surgery feared
Marquez (elbow) said Friday that he's worried he might require Tommy John surgery, Danielle Allentuck of The Denver Gazette reports. Marquez was placed on the injured list Friday afternoon with an initial diagnosis of right elbow inflammation, but he'll get another MRI and a second opinion from a specialist Monday. Either way, it's clear now that the 28-year-old right-hander is going to be absent from the Rockies' rotation for much longer than 15 days. Tommy John surgery would knock him out until late 2024. Marquez is in the final guaranteed year of the five-year, $43 million extension he signed with Colorado back in April 2019.... See More ... See Less -
Rockies' German Marquez: Placed on IL with sore elbow
Marquez was placed on the 15-day injured list Friday, retroactive to April 27, with right elbow inflammation. Marquez was pulled from his last turn in the Rockies' rotation Wednesday versus the Guardians after experiencing upper-arm discomfort. An MRI taken Thursday showed no structural damage, but the 28-year-old right-hander will need some time off as the elbow inflammation dissipates. Connor Seabold is up from Triple-A Albuquerque in a corresponding move and could be a fill-in option for Marquez.... See More ... See Less -
Rockies' German Marquez: Hurts triceps, headed for MRI
Marquez was diagnosed with a right triceps injury after exiting his start in Wednesday's 4-1 loss to the Guardians, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. He's scheduled to undergo an MRI on Thursday in Denver. Making his return Wednesday from a minimum-length stay on the injured list due to right forearm inflammation, Marquez (2-2) took the loss after giving up three earned runs on six hits and one walk while striking out four over 3.2 innings. Though he was laboring through the start, Marquez was expected to work deeper into the outing before he felt a "sharp pain" in his arm following his 58th and final pitch of the afternoon. While initial tests on Marquez's arm didn't show any significant damage nor an aggravation of the prior injury, the Rockies won't know the full extent of the issue until after the MRI is conducted.... See More ... See Less -
Rockies' German Marquez: Exits with injury
Marquez exited Wednesday's start in Cleveland with an apparent right arm injury, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. After spending the minimum amount of time on the 15-day injured list with a right forearm inflammation, Marquez was activated ahead of Wednesday's contest, but he recorded just 11 outs, struck out four and surrendered three runs before succumbing to another arm injury. The Rockies should provide another update on Marquez's condition after the game, including information on whether his injury is related to the previous forearm strain. Colorado has off days coming up Thursday and Monday, so if Marquez's arm injury is minor enough to avoid a return trip to the IL, he could remain on the active roster and get pushed to the back of the rotation.... Rockies' German Marquez: Reinstated from IL
The Rockies reinstated Marquez (forearm) from the 15-day injured list ahead of his scheduled start Wednesday against the Guardians. Marquez will make his return to the mound after spending the minimum 15 days on the IL after straining his right forearm. Considering the fact that he didn't make any rehab starts and instead is stepping right back into big-league competition, it's likely that he won't have a complete workload Wednesday. To make room for Marquez on the major-league roster, Jose Urena was designated for assignment in a corresponding move.... See More ... See Less -
Rockies' German Marquez: Set to start Wednesday
The Rockies are expected to activate Marquez (forearm) from the 15-day injured list to have him start Wednesday's series finale in Cleveland, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. Marquez reportedly responded well to throwing a bullpen session Sunday, his second since landing on the injured list April 12. Rather than having Marquez waste his bullets during a simulated game or minor-league rehab start, the right-hander will slot right back into the big-league rotation when he's first eligible to return from the IL. He could be in store for a lighter workload than usual, however.... See More ... See Less -
Rockies' German Marquez: Could return from IL this weekend
Rockies manager Bud Black said Marquez (forearm) completed a second full bullpen session Sunday and is "on track" to return from the 15-day injured list as soon as this weekend, MLB.com reports. Marquez is eligible to return from the IL as soon as Wednesday's series finale in Cleveland, but Noah Davis is already listed as the team's confirmed starter for that day. As such, a return for this weekend's series versus the Diamondbacks at Coors Field seems more realistic for Marquez, provided the Rockies don't feel that he needs to head out on a minor-league rehab assignment beforehand. Whenever Marquez is activated, Austin Gomber (0-4, 12.12 ERA, 2.14 WHIP in four starts) would seem to be most at risk of losing his rotation spot.... See More ... See Less -
Rockies' German Marquez: Bullpen session coming Thursday
Marquez (forearm) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Thursday, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. Before he's formally cleared to resume mound work, Marquez will play catch off flat ground from 90 feet Monday. The Rockies have optimism that the right forearm strain Marquez sustained in an April 10 start won't require anything more than a 15-day stint on the injured list, but he still has a few hurdles to clear in the recovery process to make that a reality.... See More ... See Less -
Rockies' German Marquez: Minimum IL stay expected
Marquez (forearm) is expected to need only a minimum stay on the 15-day injured list, Manny Randhawa of MLB.com reports. The forearm injury which sent Marquez to the IL is muscle-related, so he just needs a few days of rest for it to calm down. It's unclear whether Marquez will make a rehab start before returning, but it sounds like he'll be back with the big club before the end of the month.... See More ... See Less -
Rockies' German Marquez: Moves to IL
The Rockies placed Marquez (forearm) on the 15-day injured list Wednesday, Kyle Newman of The Denver Post reports. Marquez's move to the IL was fully expected after he exited Monday's win over St. Louis with a right forearm strain. Fortunately for Marquez, an MRI has ruled out any structural damage to his forearm, so he could have a chance to return from the IL when first eligible April 26, or close to it. Triple-A Albuquerque starter Noah Davis seems to be the most likely candidate to take Marquez's spot in Colorado's rotation.... See More ... See Less
