Grandal is batting .220 with two home runs in 13 games on the year.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Yasmani Grandal: Held out again
Grandal (groin) remains out of the lineup for Thursday's contest versus the Giants, Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Pirates' Yasmani Grandal: Not in Wednesday's lineup
Grandal (groin) is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game versus the Giants. Grandal was removed late in Tuesday's 7-6 win with left groin soreness. He has avoided the injured list for the time being, though the Pirates have added catcher Grant Koch to their taxi squad as protection in case the team needs to move another backstop onto the 26-man active roster. Joey Bart will handle the catching duties Wednesday in Grandal's stead.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Yasmani Grandal: Removed with groin injury
Grandal was removed from Tuesday's game against the Giants due to left groin discomfort, Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. After going hitless in his first three at-bats of the night, Grandal doubled and came around to score during Pittsburgh's ninth-inning rally, but he was unable to catch in the top of the 10th inning. The severity of his injury isn't immediately apparent, but the Pirates should have more information on the veteran backstop's injury before the start of Wednesday's game.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Yasmani Grandal: Notches rare steal
Grandal went 1-for-4 with a stolen base in Sunday's 3-2 win over the Cubs. The steal was Grandal's first -- and first attempt -- since 2022, and it was just his 13th career theft. The catcher is off to a middling start to his season after missing the first month-plus due to plantar fasciitis in his left foot. He's slashing .211/.231/.395 with two home runs, eight RBI, four runs scored and a double over 39 plate appearances while adding a 1:7 BB:K. Grandal is handling the starting job at catcher for the Pirates over Joey Bart.... See More ... See Less -

Pirates' Yasmani Grandal: Resting Sunday
Grandal is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Cubs. Grandal had started at catcher both of the past two days, so he's likely just sitting out Sunday for maintenance purposes as the Pirates and Cubs wrap up their series with an afternoon game. Joey Bart will replace Grandal behind the dish.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Yasmani Grandal: Getting rest Wednesday
Grandal is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Angels. Grandal will get a breather for the day game after he was behind the plate for all nine innings of Tuesday's 9-0 loss. Joey Bart will step in for Grandal as the Pirates' starting catcher.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Yasmani Grandal: Heads to bench Monday
Grandal is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Angels. After being activated from the 10-day injured list over the weekend, Grandal started behind the plate Saturday and Sunday against the Rockies, going 1-for-7 between those contests. Now that he's moved past the bout with plantar fasciitis that sidelined him from the first five weeks of the season, Grandal is expected to serve as the Pirates' No. 1 catcher, though backup Joey Bart should still factor into the equation if he continues to swing a hot bat. Bart will be behind the dish Monday while Grandal rests.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Yasmani Grandal: One hit in Pittsburgh debut
Grandal went 1-for-4 Saturday against the Rockies. Grandal made his first start since joining the Pirates this offseason, as he was sidelined by a foot injury for the first month of the campaign. He reached base in his first plate appearance on a single. Grandal is expected to serve as Pittsburgh's primary catcher, though he may be pushed for playing time by Joey Bart.... See More ... Pirates' Yasmani Grandal: Back in action Saturday
Grandal is starting at catcher and batting sixth in Saturday's game against the Rockies. Grandal missed all of spring training due to plantar fasciitis in his foot, and he began the season on the 10-day injured list. He played in nine rehab games with Triple-A Indianapolis, posting a .257/.316/.400 line with one home run and 11 RBI over 38 plate appearances. Grandal was activated from the IL on Friday, and he's set to make his 2024 debut Saturday against Rockies southpaw Austin Gomber.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Yasmani Grandal: Returns from injured list
The Pirates activated Grandal (foot) from the 10-day injured list Friday, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports. Grandal got a late start to the season while battling plantar fasciitis in his left foot, but he participated in nine rehab games with Triple-A Indianapolis and is feeling well enough to join the active roster after batting .257 (9-for-35) with two doubles and a homer. The veteran catcher is likely to share starts behind the dish with Joey Bart.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Yasmani Grandal: Spotted at PNC Park
Grandal (foot) joined the Pirates at PNC Park on Friday, Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Grandal has not yet been activated from the injured list, but that seems likely to happen prior to Friday's game against the Rockies. The veteran catcher missed the first month-plus of the season due to plantar fasciitis in his left foot but has played nine rehab games with Triple-A Indianapolis, posting a .716 OPS with one home run. Pittsburgh could send the struggling Henry Davis down to make room on the active roster for Grandal.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Yasmani Grandal: Appears in back-to-back games
Grandal (foot) served as the designated hitter Tuesday and as the catcher Wednesday during a rehab assignment with Triple-A Indianapolis, MLB.com reports. Grandal's ability to play in back-to-back games was the original benchmark the Pirates set for his return from the injured list. However, the team has since shifted its stance and has noted that he still has some progress to make prior to being activated. Grandal should be in Pittsburgh soon, but the exact timeline remains murky.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Yasmani Grandal: Return from IL imminent
Grandal (foot) has made six appearances for Triple-A Indianapolis during his rehab assignment, going 5-for-21 with one home run, two walks, two runs and six RBI. Perhaps more important than his statistical production is the fact that Grandal has made five of his six starts behind the plate, a sign that he's feeling healthy after he was shut down in the spring due to plantar fasciitis in his left foot. Per Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com, general manager Ben Cherington noted that Grandal's upcoming return will force the Pirates to make a tough roster decision, as one of Henry Davis and Joey Bart will lose out on a spot. Given that Bart is out of options and has been performing better of the two backstops, Davis seems like the more logical choice to get demoted to Triple-A Indianapolis to make room for Grandal, even though Davis is seen as the Pirates' long-term answer behind the dish.... Alex Stumpf@AlexJStumpf17H agoThat's game. Pirates 4, Twins 0. Rowdy Tellez homered to break a scoreless game in the seventh, singled home two more in the eighth and later scored on a base hit. Luis Ortiz led the charge in a bullpen game. That's three shutouts this homestand for the Pirates. They are 31-33.

Alex Stumpf@AlexJStumpf17H ago1-2-3 eighth inning for Colin Holderman, thanks in part to another great play up the middle by Gonzales. I don't know if I've seen Shelton manage a game this aggressively since Miami. If the Pirates pull this off, it might be a bit of a statement game.

Alex Stumpf@AlexJStumpf19H agoLuis Ortiz has tossed 2 1/3 scoreless. Nobody is currently throwing in the Pirates' bullpen, so he might get a fourth up. Pirates have five singles but nothing to show for it. 0-0, bottom four
