Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Sitting versus southpaw
Abreu is out of the starting lineup for Sunday's series finale against the Nationals, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.
The lefty-hitting Abreu will begin Sunday's game in the dugout as Washington sends out left-hander MacKenzie Gore. Ceddanne Rafaela will start in center field, while Jarren Duran and Tyler O'Neill man left and right field, respectively. Abreu hit a solo home run in the bottom of the third inning in Saturday's 4-2 win. He's slashing .284/.378/.480 with three home runs and 14 RBI over 119 plate appearances this season.

Abreu went 1-for-3 with a walk, a run and a stolen base in Wednesday's 6-2 win against the Giants.
Abreu stole a base in three straight games between April 15 and 18, but he hadn't notched any thefts over his subsequent 10 contests coming into Wednesday. The 24-year-old outfielder continues to cement his place in the starting lineup, as he's slashing .316/.395/.519 with two homers, 12 RBI, 14 runs and five thefts on the campaign. Abreu began the campaign as Boston's fourth outfielder, but has since emerged as the team's everyday right fielder and cleanup hitter.

Abreu went 3-for-4 with a walk, a double, a triple, an RBI and a run scored in Tuesday's 4-0 win over San Francisco.
Abreu is swinging a productive bat; this was his fifth multi-hit game over the last 10 contests, during which he's 18-for-41 with nine extra-base hits, 10 RBI and eight runs scored. Much of that production has come as the cleanup batter, a spot that had been filled by Triston Casas prior to the oblique injury that landed him on the 60-day injured list.

Abreu batted cleanup and went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 4-1 loss to the Guardians.
Abreu broke a scoreless tie in the seventh inning with the home run, but the Red Sox were unable to build off it. It was the fourth consecutive game that an Abreu hit gave Boston a lead. The outfielder, who has reached base safely in 11 straight games, is batting .361 (13-for-36) with seven extra-base hits and seven walks during his on-base streak. This was the second straight game at cleanup for Abreu, who is needed to help replace the production lost when the team placed Triston Casas (fractured rib) on the IL.
