A 24-year-old lefty who safely projects to make it as at least a back-end starter, Robert Gasser has thrown 161.2 innings at Triple-A and finished 2023 with a 3.09 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 115 strikeouts over his final 93.1 innings. What Gasser lacks in quality offerings (zero plus pitches, 92-mph average fastball velocity) he makes up for in quantity -- he threw over 100 four-seamers, changeups, curveballs, cutters, sinkers, sliders and sweepers at Triple-A. His game is to keep hitters guessing while adeptly locating his pitches. What used to be a deep, talented Brewers rotation is now extremely top-heavy, so the back few spots should be cycled based on merit and health, and Gasser will surely get a look at some point, if not at the beginning of the season. He doesn't have the type of electric arsenal to be a bullpen weapon, so Gasser should stay stretched out all year.

    Gasser did not factor into the decision Monday against the Cubs, allowing three hits and no walks over six shutout innings. He struck out seven. Gasser dominated the Cubs, pounding them with a sound five-pitch mix to collect his second career quality start. The 24-year-old rookie has impressed in 23 innings so far, producing a 1.96 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 13:1 K:BB. Things have been excellent under the hood too, as he owns a 2.52 FIP and 47.3 percent groundball rate. Gasser is tentatively set to make his next scheduled start against the White Sox at home.

  • Brewers' Robert Gasser: Escapes with no-decision Tuesday

    Gasser came away with a no-decision in Tuesday's 7-5 win over the Marlins, coughing up five runs (four earned) on 10 hits over six innings. He didn't walk or strike out a batter. The rookie southpaw had a respectable 24 called or swinging strikes on his 80 pitches, but Gasser mostly pitched to contact and watched a number of grounders make it past the Brewers' infield defenders. He left the game in line for his first loss in the majors, but Milwaukee rallied in the eighth inning. Gasser will take a 2.65 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 6:1 K:BB through 17 innings into his next outing, which lines up to come this weekend in Boston.

Gasser was solid in his second big-league outing, allowing just one run in the third inning while the Brewers exploded for 10 runs in a convincing victory. The 24-year-old southpaw has allowed just one run through 11 innings in his first two starts after posting a 5.25 ERA in three outings with Triple-A Nashville. Gasser figures to stick in Milwaukee's rotation while DL Hall (knee) is sidelined. The former is currently slated for a road matchup with the Marlins in his next start.

The Brewers will keep Gasser in the rotation as their No. 5 starter over Tobias Myers, who was optioned to Triple-A Nashville on Friday. That same day, Gasser made his MLB debut against the Cardinals and breezed through six scoreless innings while striking out four and allowing just two hits and zero walks. His numbers in three starts at Nashville (5.25 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 17:6 K:BB in 12 innings) should give fantasy managers some pause in expecting Gasser to repeat the success of his MLB debut, but he'll at least make for an intriguing streaming option while facing off against a weak Pittsburgh offense that had posted a 70 wRC+ in nine May games heading into Sunday.

    The Brewers selected Gasser's contract from Triple-A Nashville on Friday. Gasser is set to make his major-league debut Friday against the Cardinals. The left-hander began the season on the injured list at Nashville with an elbow issue before returning to post a 5.25 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 17:6 K:BB through 12 innings. He threw 78 pitches in his last outing, so Gasser would seem prepared to throw 90 or so Friday. He could head back to Nashville after this start, but a good performance might keep him in the rotation for another turn or two until DL Hall (knee) returns from the IL.

Gasser has already received a pair of promotions since being acquired from the Padres on Aug. 1 as part of the Josh Hader deal. After finishing his time in the San Diego organization at High-A Fort Wayne, Gasser began his tenure with Milwaukee at Biloxi, where he dazzled over his four starts (2.21 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 26:8 K:BB in 20.1 innings). Gasser will get a tougher test over the final few weeks of the minor-league season while he heads to the International League, but a strong showing at Nashville down the stretch could put him in position for an early-season call-up to Milwaukee in 2023.

He's a deceptive southpaw whose low arm angle allows all of his pitches to play up. Gasser throws a low-90s fastball, an above-average slider and a solid changeup. The 23-year-old has logged a 4.18 ERA, 3.27 FIP, 1.26 WHIP, 115 strikeouts and 28 walks in 90.1 innings across 18 starts at High-A.
