Player Outlook
J.D. Davis finished strong with the Giants down the stretch of the 2022 campaign after coming over in a trade with the Mets and he carried that over into 2023, slashing .282/.362/.456 with 10 home runs and 44 RBI over 76 games through the end of June. The 30-year-old cooled off the rest of the way, though, hitting just .211/.284/.364 before ending the season with a shoulder strain. Davis still hits the ball hard (91.1 mph average exit velocity) and he did a better job of making contact in 2023 in cutting his strikeout rate to a more respectable 27.8 percent. His defense was actually much improved last season, although Davis' track record suggests he'll have to hit if he wants to play. He netted a career-high 546 plate appearances in 2023 but is no safe bet to reach that number in 2024.

  • Athletics' J.D. Davis: Getting breather Saturday

Davis is not in the starting lineup for Saturday's game against the Astros. He will begin Saturday's game on the bench after four consecutive starts. Davis recorded a hit in each of those four games, going 7-for-16 with two home runs and three RBI over that span. Brent Rooker will serve as the designated hitter Saturday while Tyler Soderstrom starts at first base against right-hander Spencer Arrighetti.

  • Athletics' J.D. Davis: Racks up three hits in loss

Davis went 3-for-4 in Friday's 6-3 loss to the Astros. Davis has gone 7-for-16 with three RBI over his last four games, though that followed a rough 1-for-17 stretch over seven contests. The 31-year-old is slashing .229/.270/.381 with four home runs, five RBI and 11 runs scored over 31 games this season. Davis should continue to see steady playing time versus southpaws, but the Athletics' outfield has gotten even more crowded by the activation of Miguel Andujar (knee) and the promotion of Daz Cameron, and that could spill over into the designated hitter spot.

  • Athletics' J.D. Davis: Pops another homer Thursday

Davis went 2-for-6 with a two-run home run in an extra-innings win over the Rockies on Thursday. Davis gave the Athletics a serious boost in the eighth inning when he left the yard with Seth Brown aboard and Oakland down by three. Half of Davis' four homers on the season have come in the last three games, and with hits in each of those contests, he's pushed his OPS (.618) to its highest point since May 8.

  • Athletics' J.D. Davis: Leaves yard Tuesday

Davis went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 5-4 win over the Rockies. Davis got the Athletics on the board with a solo blast off Cal Quantrill in the third inning. It was his first home run since he had two against the Guardians on March 29 and just his second hit in his last 20 plate appearances since May 11. The 31-year-old has lost out on playing time due to his offensive struggles. He's now slashing .196/.237/.337 with seven extra-base hits, three RBI, 10 runs and a 4:25 BB:K in 97 plate appearances.

  • Athletics' J.D. Davis: Losing work to Soderstrom

Davis remains out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Astros. Davis has now started just once in the Athletics' last five games, as he's seemingly moved into the short side of a platoon with the lefty-hitting Tyler Soderstrom, who has recently taken over as the team's primary first baseman. The 31-year-old has supplied a career-worst .586 OPS over 83 plate appearances this season, and the non-contending Athletics don't have much incentive to give him regular playing time while he's struggling to produce.

  • Athletics' J.D. Davis: Gets breather Friday

Davis isn't in the Athletics' lineup for Friday's game against the Mariners. Davis went 2-for-6 and scored three times during Wednesday's doubleheader against Texas, and he will get an extended rest period as the A's begin their series with Seattle. Tyler Soderstrom will fill the void at first base and bat sixth.

  • Athletics' J.D. Davis: Sitting for nightcap

Davis isn't in Oakland's lineup for the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Rangers. Davis went 1-for-3 with a walk and scored twice during a 9-4 victory in Game 1, and he'll catch a breather to conclude Wednesday's activities. Tyler Soderstrom will start at first base instead while batting eighth.

  • Athletics' J.D. Davis: Exiting starting nine Sunday

Davis is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Marlins. Following a stint on the 10-day injured list due to an adductor strain, Davis was activated Friday and had started at first base in both of his first two games back in action, going 2-for-7 with a run scored between those contests. The Athletics haven't indicated that Davis suffered a setback in his recovery from the injury, so his absence Sunday is presumably a pre-planned maintenance day.

  • Athletics' J.D. Davis: Returns from IL

The Athletics reinstated Davis (thigh) from the 10-day injured list Friday. The 31-year-old went 3-for-15 during a four-game rehab sitnt with Triple-A Las Vegas and is back in the lineup Friday for Oakland, as he's starting at first base and batting fifth. Davis posted a .196/.255/.373 slash line in 14 games prior to suffering the adductor strain.

  • Athletics' J.D. Davis: Will continue rehab stint

Davis (thigh) will remain on a rehab assignment at Triple-A Las Vegas at least until Thursday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. Davis got through Sunday's rehab appearance at Triple-A Las Vegas without issue, but the club evidently wants to see him get a few more chances in the minors before activating him from the 10-day IL. He served as the DH on Sunday, so he'll likely see some opportunities in the field later in the week to ensure he's back to full strength.

  • Athletics' J.D. Davis: Plays in rehab game Sunday

Davis (thigh/groin) started at designated hitter for Triple-A Las Vegas against Sacramento on Sunday and went 1-for-4 with a double and a run. Davis was given the green light to suit up Sunday after partaking in baseball activities with the Aviators on Saturday. Having apparently gotten through Sunday's contest without any issues, Davis is now slated to rejoin Oakland on Monday, when a decision on whether he'll need more rehab games or if he's ready for activation will be made.

  • Athletics' J.D. Davis: Could play in Vegas on Sunday

Davis (thigh/groin) joined Triple-A Las Vegas on Saturday to partake in baseball activities and is expected to serve as the designated hitter for the Aviators on Sunday, MLB.com reports. Davis has been sidelined since sustaining his injury April 14, but he'd been ramping up physical activity in recent days. Manager Mark Kotsay said Saturday the plan is for Davis to rejoin the Athletics on Monday, at which point it will be determined whether he'll need to play in more rehab games or if he's ready to be activated from the injured list.

  • Athletics' J.D. Davis: Ramps up activity Tuesday

Davis (thigh/groin) resumed running Tuesday, the Associated Press reports. Davis began walking on a treadmill Friday, just five days after suffering his groin strain against the Nationals. With Tuesday's ramp-up in activity, Davis is another step closer to a return, but he doesn't figure to be deemed ready for activation when first eligible Thursday.

  • Athletics' J.D. Davis: Begins treadmill work

Davis (groin) was cleared to begin walking on a treadmill Friday, the Associated Press reports. Davis suffered the groin strain last Sunday against the Nationals, so the fact he's already able to do some accelerated walking less than a week later is a good sign. However, Davis has yet to resume any baseball activities, so it remains to be seen if he'll be deemed ready to return when first eligible Thursday.

  • Athletics' J.D. Davis: Lands on IL

Oakland placed Davis on the 10-day injured list Monday with a right adductor strain, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. Davis had been expected to miss at least the next few days while recovering from the injury, and the club has now decided a trip to the IL was warranted. Outfielder Esteury Ruiz was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas in a corresponding move.

  • Athletics' J.D. Davis: Likely out at least a few days

Davis (groin) is unlikely to play for at least a few days, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Davis suffered a hip flexor/groin injury Sunday and was set to be examined by Athletics doctors Monday. Esteury Ruiz was spotted in the A's clubhouse Monday, but it's not clear whether he could be a potential roster replacement for Davis. More information should be available after Davis' exam.

  • Athletics' J.D. Davis: Exits Sunday with groin injury

Davis exited Sunday's win over the Nationals after five innings due to a right groin strain, MLB.com reports. Davis felt tightness in his groin during a fourth-inning at-bat, likely the result of a difficult over-the-shoulder catch he'd made in the top of the frame on a CJ Abrams flyball. The veteran infielder is slated for an MRI on Monday and considered day-to-day until that evaluation is completed. If Davis is forced to miss any additional time, the trio of Tyler Nevin, who served as an in-game replacement Sunday, Abraham Toro and Darell Hernaiz would all be candidates to draw starts at third base.

  • Athletics' J.D. Davis: Drills two homers

Davis went 2-for-4 with two solo home runs in Friday's loss to Cleveland. Davis went deep twice against Guardians starter Logan Allen. After being released by the Giants during Cactus League play, Davis quickly found a new home with the A's. His counting stats may end up being lacking due to Oakland's lineup, but the 30-year-old infielder's consistent playing time should help him maintain value in deeper leagues.

  • Athletics' J.D. Davis: Opens Athletics tenure hot

Davis is 3-for-5 with a double over his first two Cactus League games with the Athletics on Sunday and Monday. The new veteran addition has wasted no time making his mark with his pair of productive performances. Davis projects to hold down the primary role at third base once the regular season begins, and he'll have several more opportunities in spring play to continue tuning up for that assignment.

  • Athletics' J.D. Davis: Signs with A's

Davis signed a one-year, $2.5 million contract with the Athletics on Friday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. The Matt Chapman signing squeezed Davis out of San Francisco, but he will remain in the Bay Area. With a .760 OPS across the past three seasons, Davis instantly becomes one of the best bats in Oakland's lineup and is sure to see regular action at third base. However, the Athletics don't project to be competitive in 2024, so the 30-year-old could be flipped to a contender at the trade deadline in order to add to the team's pool of minor-league prospects.
