Reds' Frankie Montas: No-decision Sunday
Montas allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits and a walk while striking out three over 4.2 innings in a no-decision versus the Giants on Sunday.
Montas was cruising until the Giants built up a five-run rally in the fifth inning. The right-hander has made seven starts this year, and in the six during which he has been able to avoid injury, he's allowed two or fewer runs three times while giving up five runs in each of the other three. That averages out to a pedestrian 4.20 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 24:12 K:BB across 30 innings overall. Montas is projected for a difficult road start versus the Dodgers in his next outing.

Reds' Frankie Montas: Stuck with loss in return
Montas (2-3) took the loss Tuesday against the Diamondbacks, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits and one walk over six innings. He struck out seven.
Montas wound up spending the minimum 15 days on the IL after he was struck by a line drive in his last start, resulting in a bruised forearm. The 31-year-old right-hander was sharp in his return, though he'd ultimately wind up with the loss as the Reds' offense couldn't break through against Zac Gallen. Montas now sports a 3.55 ERA with a 1.30 WHIP and 21:11 K:BB across his first six starts (25.1 innings) with Cincinnati. He's currently lined up for a road matchup with the Giants on Sunday in his next outing.

Reds' Frankie Montas: Activated ahead of Tuesday's start
The Reds activated Montas (forearm) from the 15-day injured list ahead of his scheduled start against the Diamondbacks on Tuesday.
Montas is set to rejoin the rotation Tuesday versus the Diamondbacks after missing the last two weeks with a bruised right forearm. The Reds have opted to bring him back without a rehab start, as Montas evidently looked good enough in a couple bullpen sessions to convince the team he was ready. Because of that, he might not be be able to handle a full workload. That, combined with his uneven performance before the injury, makes Montas an iffy fantasy start Tuesday.

Reds' Frankie Montas: Tuesday's scheduled starter
Montas (forearm) is listed as the scheduled starter for Tuesday's game against the Diamondbacks in Cincinnati.
Montas, who has been on the 15-day injured list since April 22, threw a couple of bullpen sessions last week. The Reds apparently saw enough from Montas in those throwing sessions to have him avoid a minor-league rehab stint and slot right back into the big-league rotation for the series opener versus Arizona.

Reds' Frankie Montas: Tracking toward return next week
Reds manager David Bell said Tuesday that he expects Montas (forearm) to return from the 15-day injured list when first eligible May 7 or the day after, MLB.com reports.
Montas was placed on the IL on April 22 with a bruised right forearm, which he sustained when he was struck by a line drive in his start a day earlier. Bell noted that Montas threw a side session Monday without issue, and the right-hander will throw one more bullpen session later this week as a final test of his health. If all goes well, Montas should rejoin the rotation for the Reds' three-game series with the Diamondbacks that begins next Tuesday.

Reds' Frankie Montas: Shelved with bruised forearm
The Reds placed Montas (forearm) on the 15-day injured list Monday.
Montas' move to the IL isn't an overly surprising one, as the right-hander had already conceded that he would need to miss at least his next turn through the rotation after exiting in the first inning of his start Sunday against the Angels when he was struck in his pitching arm by a liner. Fortunately for Montas, he was able to avoid any fractured bones, but he's dealing with a painful bruise that will keep him on the shelf for at least the next two weeks. If Montas is able to resume throwing in the coming days, he should have a good chance at returning from the 15-day IL around the time he's first eligible for activation May 7. The Reds are likely to turn to Nick Martinez to fill Montas' spot in the rotation.
