Hammons was released by the Heat on Thursday, Ira Winderman of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.
With the Heat acquiring Dwyane Wade from the Cavaliers on Thursday in exchange for a second-round pick, Miami needed to open up a roster spot. That leaves Hammons momentarily without a home, but he'll likely stick around in the G League to close out the season.

Hammons was assigned to the G-League on Monday, Tom D'Angelo of the Palm Beach Post reports.
Hammons has yet to see the floor for the Heat over the first few games of the season, so he'll head to the Sioux Fall Skyforce in order to get some in-game action. Hammons is merely an emergency depth option at center for the Heat, currently behind the likes of Hassan Whitside, Kelly Olynyk, Jordan Mickey and Bam Adebayo, so expect plenty of G-League stints throughout the 2017-18 campaign.

Heat's A.J. Hammons: Available Saturday
Hammons (illness) will be available to play during Saturday's game against the Pacers.
With Hassan Whiteside (knee) out, the Heat will need all the help they can get at center. Kelly Olynyk, Hammons and Bam Adebayo are likely the three candidates to spend the most time at the position Saturday. That said, Hammons certainly makes for a risky DFS play, as he's never recorded more than nine points or seven rebounds in a game.

Heat's A.J. Hammons: Traded to Miami
Hammons was traded to the Heat on Friday in exchange for Josh McRoberts, a future second-round pick, and cash considerations.
Hammons is essentially a throw-in in the deal, which functions to shed salary for the Heat, while the Mavericks gain a veteran forward on an expiring deal. Whether Hammons is truly in the Heat's long-term plan remains to be seen, but he struggled in limited NBA minutes last season, shooting just 40.5 percent from the field in 163 total minutes (22 appearances). The former Purdue standout found more success in the G-League, where he posted averages of 12.1 points, 7.5 rebounds and 1.1 assists in 15 games for the Texas Legends.

Mavericks' A.J. Hammons: Sets career highs in boards, blocks Tuesday
Hammons registered nine points (3-6 FG, 1-3 3Pt, 2-2 FT), seven rebounds, three blocks and one steal across 26 minutes in a 98-87 loss to the Kings on Tuesday.
It was Hammons' first appearance since the calendar flipped to 2017, as the Mavericks had been letting the rookie pick up extended run with the D-League's Texas Legends over the last three months. With the Mavericks now eliminated from playoff contention, there's a good chance that coach Rick Carlisle will rest some of his key regulars over the team's final five games, providing Hammons an opportunity to see some run with the big club. Hammons' outing Tuesday was certainly encouraging, but it's worthwhile to see how he produces Wednesday against the Clippers before running to the waiver wire to pick him up.

Hammons just joined the Legends for a one-game stint in Saturday's 121-110 win over the Long Island Nets, during which he provided six points (3-7 FG, 0-1 3Pt), 11 rebounds, one assist and one block. Though he's now back with the Mavericks, Hammons is expected to serve as one of the team's two inactive players in Sunday's game against the Thunder.

Hammons hasn't taken part in a game with the Mavericks since a Dec. 30 matchup with the Warriors, so he's spent a ton of time in the D-League getting in-game reps that he wasn't seeing with the big club. With the trade deadline approaching, the Mavericks could make some moves with the centers they have on the roster, which potentially opens a few minutes for Hammons. That said, even if he's able to garner some extra playing time, it won't be enough to make him relevant in the majority of fantasy leagues, so Hammons can continue to be avoided for the near future.

Hammons was promoted from the Mavercks' D-League Texas Legends on Wednesday, Earl K. Snead of Mavs.com reports.
Hammon will provide a Mavericks roster devoid of Dirk Nowitzki (rest), Deron Williams (toe), J.J. Barea (calf) and Wesley Matthews (hip) with some added depth. Given that Andrew Bogut will be in just his second game back from an extended layoff due to a hamstring injury, his minutes may be limited. If that's the case, it's possible Hammons would see some playing time off the bench Thursday. The rookie big man has averaged 1.4 points, 1.2 rebounds and 0.4 blocks per game over 4.5 minutes in 17 appearances this season, so his presence on the roster shouldn't change much about his fantasy prospects.
