Pirates' Quinn Priester: Hurt by long ball in quality start
Priester (0-2) took the loss Wednesday as the Pirates were downed 4-0 by the A's, giving up three runs (two earned) on five hits and four walks over six innings. He struck out three.
The 23-year-old battled both his control and his command, throwing only 59 of 97 pitches for strikes and serving up homers to Abraham Toro in the second inning and Tyler Nevin in the third. Priester still managed to put together his second straight quality start, and through three outings since his promotion he's delivered a solid 3.31 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 11:6 K:BB through 16.1 innings. His time in the Pittsburgh rotation could be running short though, with top prospect Paul Skenes getting stretched out to six innings in his last start for Triple-A Indianapolis. If Priester gets another turn, he lines up for a home start against the Angels early next week.

Pirates' Quinn Priester: Delivers six shutout frames
Priester struck out six and gave up three hits and one walk over six scoreless innings during Friday's 3-0 loss in San Francisco. He didn't factor in the decision.
Priester and Giants starter Kyle Harrison each delivered six shutout frames, and the game remained a scoreless tie until Patrick Bailey's walk-off homer in the ninth. Priester surrendered three homers in his season debut versus Boston last week, but he looked much better Friday with 14 whiffs on 84 pitches (58 strikes). The strong performance should give the 23-year-old another turn through the rotation while Marco Gonzales remains sidelined by a forearm injury.

Pirates' Quinn Priester: Set to start Friday
Priester is slated to make his next appearance as the starting pitcher for Friday's game against the Giants in San Francisco, Alex Stumpf of MLB.com reports.
Earlier in the week, the Pirates listed Priester as their probable starter for Wednesday's game against the Brewers, but Pittsburgh is instead having Josh Fleming open Wednesday's contest for what will be a bullpen day. Priester won't have his turn in the rotation skipped, however, as the Pirates will simply push him back in the schedule a couple of days to have him start Friday's series opener at Oracle Park. Priester will look to rebound after he struggled mightily in his 2024 MLB debut this past Friday versus the Red Sox, taking a loss while allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits and one walk over 4.1 innings.

Pirates' Quinn Priester: Not starting, may work in bulk relief
Priester is no longer scheduled to start Wednesday's game against the Brewers, as Pirates manager Derek Shelton confirmed that Josh Fleming will get the nod instead, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports.
Though Shelton didn't go into detail regarding the Bucs' pitching plans for Wednesday, Priester could still factor into the equation even though he won't be making his second start of the season. Fleming hasn't recorded more than five outs in any of his last eight appearances for Pittsburgh and likely won't be asked to work deep into Wednesday's contest, so Priester could be on tap to serve as a bulk reliever and cover multiple innings out of the bullpen. Deploying Priester in relief could yield better results for the young right-hander, who was roughed up by the Red Sox for five runs (four earned) on seven hits and one walk over 4.1 innings in his 2024 MLB debut this past Friday.

Priester is scheduled to start Wednesday's game against the Brewers at PNC Park.
Even though he was lit up for five runs (four earned) on seven hits -- including three home runs -- and one walk across 4.1 innings in his 2024 MLB debut this past Friday against the Red Sox, Priester will get at least one more chance to prove that he belongs in the big-league rotation. He'll have the benefit of making a second straight start at home, though the more forgiving dimensions of PNC Park didn't do him many favors this past weekend when it came to keeping the ball in the yard. If Priester is unable to show improvement Wednesday and ends up being sent back to the minors, top prospect Paul Skenes could be next in line to fill the No. 5 spot in Pittsburgh's rotation.

It's never a good sign for a pitcher when they have more homers allowed than strikeouts, and the first long ball he served up -- a solo shot by Wilyer Abreu in the first inning -- actually left PNC Park completely. Priester was making his 2024 debut for Pittsburgh on Friday, and after tossing 53 of 86 pitches for strikes, he could be headed back to Triple-A Indianapolis. If the 23-year-old righty sticks around, his next start will likely come at home next week against the Brewers.

Priester is off to a nice start this season with Indianapolis, holding a 3.95 ERA and 20:5 K:BB over 13.2 innings covering three starts. It's possible he'll be needed for additional starts while Marco Gonzales (forearm) is out, but fantasy managers might be wise to take a wait-and-see approach with Priester.

Priester missed out on a spot in the Pirates' season-opening rotation, with Pittsburgh settling on veterans Martin Perez, Marco Gonzales and Bailey Falter and rookie Jared Jones to fill out its starting ranks behind Opening Day starter Mitch Keller. Priester threw his slider at an average of 88.7 mph in his Grapefruit League debut Wednesday, Alex Stumpf of MLB.com reports.
Priester reached the majors in 2023, but he struggled to a 7.74 ERA and 1.70 WHIP across 50 innings in Pittsburgh. One notable problem was a dip in velocity, something he aimed to change by reworking his delivery this offseason. The early returns were positive, as his slider velocity ticked up 3.2 mph compared to the 2023 campaign. The movement on the pitch also changed and now resembles more of a cutter than a slider. Priester is competing for a back-end rotation spot this spring and turned in two perfect innings with one strikeout Wednesday against the Tigers.

Priester got off to a rough start, surrendering a leadoff double to Jorge Soler to start the game, along with two more singles and a run in the first inning. Priester allowed no hits through five, but following a Jonathan India single to lead off the sixth, TJ Friedl hit a two-run homer to break up the shutout. Priester allowed no more damage to complete six innings for the second consecutive outing and earn his first career quality start. He entered the contest with an 8.61 ERA spanning 38.2 innings over eight appearances (six starts) in his first big-league season, but finally showed why the Pirates made him their first-round draft selection in 2019. He'll look to build off Sunday's effort with one more 2023 appearance, currently slated to take place next weekend at home against Miami.

Bailey Falter got the start but curiously got the hook after giving up two runs in the first inning, with Priester taking over to begin the second. The rookie right-hander ended up handling his biggest workload in eight big-league appearances -- his previous high was 5.1 frames -- but he also served up his 10th homer, leaving him with a 8.61 ERA, 1.73 WHIP and 29:21 K:BB through 38.2 MLB innings. It's not yet clear if the Pirates will continue deploying Falter and Priester together as a tandem in some fashion, but if so the duo would line up for two more appearances before the end of the regular season.

While his final line didn't look like much on the surface, Priester managed to avoid serving up any homers to the league's most dangerous offense, and he walked one batter or fewer for the first time in five MLB starts.
