Cardinals' Drew Rom: Slated for shoulder surgery
Rom is expected to undergo left shoulder surgery, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
The exact nature of the operation isn't known yet, but surgery was recommended after Rom met with Dr. Keith Meister in Dallas on Tuesday. The surgery presumably would end Rom's 2024 season before it begins, but more information on a timeline should be known after the procedure.

The Cardinals transferred Rom (biceps) to the 60-day injured list Tuesday, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.

Rom came away with a no-decision in Saturday's 15-6 rout of the Reds, giving up four runs on seven hits and three walks over 4.1 innings. He struck out seven.
The Cardinals' offense handed the southpaw a 10-0 lead after two innings, but Rom wasn't efficient enough to stick around and qualify for his second win, getting the hook after 90 pitches (55 strikes). The seven strikeouts did tie his career high, however, set Sept. 13 against the Orioles. Rom (1-4) allowed eight runs (six earned) on 11 hits and a walk over 3.1 innings Sunday, striking out four and taking a loss against San Diego.
Rom served up a three-run shot to Juan Soto in the first frame and allowed at least one run in each inning he appeared in. Rom (1-3) took the loss Tuesday, coughing up five runs on six hits and two walks over 3.1 innings as the Cardinals fell 7-3 to the Brewers. He struck out three.
Five of the six hits off the southpaw went for extra bases, including a third-inning solo shot by William Contreras. Rom was coming off his best big-league outing to date last Wednesday when he blanked the Orioles over 5.1 innings, but for the most part the 23-year-old hasn't looked ready for the majors, stumbling to a 6.92 ERA, 1.85 WHIP and 21:15 K:BB through his first 26 MLB innings. Assuming St. Louis doesn't shuffle its rotation in order to evaluate another young arm, Rom lines up to take the mound again this weekend in San Diego.

Rom (1-2) earned the win Wednesday, allowing two hits and three walks over 5.1 scoreless innings in a 1-0 victory over the Orioles. He struck out seven.
Rom was impressive against a strong Baltimore lineup, delivering 5.1 scoreless innings while setting a season high with seven strikeouts in his first major-league win. After struggling through his first four starts, the rookie left-hander now sports a 5.96 ERA with a 1.76 WHIP and 18:13 K:BB through 22.2 innings. Rom will look to build on Wednesday's performance in his next outing, currently scheduled for next week against the Brewers.

Cardinals' Drew Rom: Labors against Pirates
Rom allowed three runs on five hits and three walks while striking out one batter over 4.2 innings in a no-decision against Pittsburgh on Saturday.
Rom began the contest well, holding the Pirates scoreless through three frames. However, he gave up a run on a walk and a triple in the fourth, then saw the wheels fall off in the fifth when four of the six batters he faced reached base. Rom was lifted before he could complete five innings after Andrew McCutchen knotted the score 3-3 with a two-out RBI single. Rom at least avoided taking his third straight loss since being called up to the majors, but he's had a rough time with a 7.24 ERA, 1.90 WHIP and 11:8 K:BB over 13.2 frames thus far.

It was certainly a better performance from Rom after he allowed eight runs (six earned) across 3.2 innings in his big-league debut. Still, the rookie left-hander took a second loss as the Cardinals offense couldn't crack Aaron Nola in a 3-0 defeat. Rom had shown some promise in the minors this season, working to a 2.70 ERA while striking out 45 over his last seven Triple-A starts (33.1 innings). Sunday's outing could earn him another shot in the Cardinals' rotation -- Rom would currently line up for a home matchup with the Pirates next week.

The Cardinals will recall Rom from Triple-A Memphis to start Monday's game against the Pirates at PNC Park, John Denton of MLB.com reports.
One of three prospects acquired from the Orioles in the Aug. 1 deal that sent Jack Flaherty to Baltimore, Rom will be the first of the trio to reach the big leagues. Rom was unfazed by the move from Triple-A Norfolk in the Baltimore organization to Memphis, as he struck out 18 batters and allowed just one earned run on two hits and four walks over his two starts with the Redbirds. The Cardinals will make room in the rotation for Rom while Matthew Liberatore gets two extra days to recover from a back injury before making his next start, but whether Rom sticks with the big club beyond Monday will likely hinge on how he performs in his big-league debut. If Rom acquits himself well Monday, the Cardinals would likely be willing to open up a more permanent spot for him in the rotation.
