Steven Kwan offers batting average, steals and runs at the expense of home runs and RBI. Nobody in baseball whiffs at a lower rate than Kwan (career 10.0 K%) and those contact skills have kept him atop the Guardians' lineup. He's scored 182 runs over the past two seasons, 20th in the majors in that span. Kwan is an impressive runner and improved his efficiency on the basepaths last season, getting caught only three times in 24 steal attempts. The dearth of power makes Kwan a tricky play in certain league formats. In rotisserie leagues, Kwan's deficiencies can be stomached as he does more good than harm and the power can be made up elsewhere. However, in points leagues without a premium for stolen bases, Kwan might not clear the bar, especially if you're only starting three outfielders. Know your league rules well because Kwan's utility varies depending on the format.

  • Guardians' Steven Kwan: Facing four-week absence

    The Guardians expect Kwan to miss approximately four weeks after placing him on the 10-day injured list earlier Monday with an acute left hamstring strain, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports. Kwan was diagnosed with the acute hamstring strain after undergoing an MRI following his early exit from Saturday's 7-1 win over the Angels. With imaging determining that he sustained more than a mild injury, Kwan will be sidelined well beyond the minimum 10 days, and a more precise return date likely won't come into focus until he reaches the point in his rehab where he's performing baseball activities. The Guardians are likely to turn to Estevan Florial, Ramon Laureano and Gabriel Arias to fill in for Kwan in the corner outfield, while prospect Kyle Manzardo was promoted from Triple-A Columbus on Monday and should take on an everyday role at designated hitter for at least the next few weeks.

    The Guardians placed Kwan on the 10-day injured list Monday with a left hamstring strain. Cleveland hasn't disclosed the grade of Kwan's hamstring strain, which he suffered in Saturday's 7-1 win over the Angels. The injury forced him to miss his second game of the season Sunday, and he'll be sidelined through at least May 14 as a result of landing on the IL. The Guardians called up prospect Kyle Manzardo from Triple-A Columbus to take over Kwan's spot on the 26-man active roster, and Manzardo should also inherit an everyday role while the 26-year-old outfielder is on the shelf. Manzardo will serve as the Guardians' designated hitter in Monday's series opener versus the Tigers and will hit seventh, while Estevan Florial will fill in for Kwan in left field and atop the batting order.

Kwan tweaked the hamstring during Saturday's 7-1 win over the Angels while making a play in the outfield. Kwan's RBI triple in the fifth inning gave the Guardians a 2-0 lead, and he plated the decisive run with a double in the 10th. Kwan's speed was on display throughout the contest, as neither of his base knocks left the infield and he crossed the plate on a steal of home in the eighth inning. He led off the game by ripping a Chris Sale sinker down the right-field line, but not much else went right for the Guardians on the night.
