Top Connor Wong News

  • Red Sox's Connor Wong: Big night in win

Wong went 3-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI and a run scored in Wednesday's 6-2 win over San Francisco.

Wong has been a consistent producer at the dish, never going more than one game without a hit. The catcher, who recorded his eighth multi-hit game Wednesday, is slashing .366/.367/.620 through 75 plate appearances. Those numbers are sure to correct -- a .412 BABIP indicates that -- but Wong has improved his contact rate on pitches in the zone, jumping up to 84.2 percent compared to 74.3 percent in 2023.

  • Red Sox's Connor Wong: Not starting Tuesday

Wong is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Giants, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.

Wong started the previous three games but will sit Tuesday after a team day off Monday, affording him two straight days of rest. Reese McGuire is working behind the plate and batting eighth.

  • Red Sox's Connor Wong: Reclaims top catching job

Wong will start at catcher and bat sixth in Wednesday's game against the Guardians, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports.

The Red Sox will include Wong in the starting nine for the seventh time in eight games, with both of his last two starts having come against right-handed pitching. The right-handed-hitting Wong appeared to have fallen into the short side of a catching platoon with the lefty-hitting Reese McGuire earlier in the season, but Wong since looks to have re-emerged as the clear No. 1 option. With Wong maintaining an excellent .320/.327/.520 slash line with three home runs and eight RBI and his playing time now on the rise, he might be worth a look in leagues where he's still on the waiver wire.

  • Red Sox's Connor Wong: Gets rest after big game

Wong is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Guardians.

Wong will get a breather for the day game after he powered the Red Sox to an 8-0 win Wednesday by going 4-for-4 with two home runs and three RBI while also reaching base on a hit by pitch. Reese McGuire will get the nod behind the plate Thursday, but the hot-hitting Wong appears to have clearly supplanted him as the Red Sox's preferred option at catcher.

  • Red Sox's Connor Wong: Four hits, two homers in win

Wong went 4-for-4 with a pair of homers and three total RBI in Wednesday's 8-0 victory over the Guardians.

It's the second two-homer game of Wong's career while his four hits matched a personal best. The 27-year-old catcher has been on fire lately, going 13-for-31 with four home runs in his last eight games while taking over the primary catching job in Boston. Wong's now slashing a solid .320/.327/.520 with three home runs (six shy of a career high), eight RBI and five runs scored across 51 plate appearances to open the campaign.

  • Red Sox's Connor Wong: Slugs second homer

Wong went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI in Tuesday's 10-7 extra-innings loss to the Guardians.

The 27-year-old has ceded more work than expected to Reese McGuire early in the season, but the arrangement seems to be working for both backstops. Through 10 games, Wong is batting a blistering .355 (11-for-31) with a double, two homers, three runs and seven RBI, and his share of the playing time could be creeping back up as he's started three of the last five games, with Tuesday's start coming against right-hander Tanner Bibee.

  • Red Sox's Connor Wong: Swats pinch hit homer

Wong entered as a pinch hitter and went 1-for-1 with a solo home run in Thursday's 9-4 extra-inning loss to the Orioles.

Wong's home run tied the game in the eighth inning, setting up the extra frame. He remained in the game to play second base and was eventually moved behind the plate when starting backstop Reese McGuire was ejected for arguing a called strike. The catching split thus far has favored McGuire, who has eight starts and 33 plate appearances compared to Wong's five starts and 20 PAs.

Wong isn't in the Red Sox's lineup Friday against the Mariners, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.

  • Red Sox's Connor Wong: Homers in two straight

Wong started at catcher and went 2-for-3 with with a two-run home run in Monday's spring game against the Twins.

Wong went deep for the second time in as many games, upping his spring line to .433/.469/.833 with eight extra-base hits and eight RBI over 30 Grapefruit League at-bats. The spring production is a sign that offseason adjustments have worked, per Ian Browne of MLB.com. "He's made adjustments," manager Alex Cora said. "It started towards the end of the [2023] season. And in the offseason, [hitting coach] Pete [Fatse] came down here to Fort Myers. They started cleaning up a few things with the leg kick and all that." Wong said he's shorter to the baseball and trying to eliminate the swing-and-miss and choose better pitches overall. In 2023, Wong struck out 134 times in 403 plate appearances (33.3 K%).

  • Red Sox's Connor Wong: To return to catching Saturday

Wong (elbow) will start at catcher in Saturday's Grapefruit League contest versus the Nationals, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports.

Wong (elbow) went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI as the designated hitter in Sunday's spring game against Atlanta.

  • Red Sox's Connor Wong: Ready to hit

Wong (elbow) is batting eighth as the designated hitter for Sunday's spring game against Atlanta.

The 27-year-old catcher is a bit behind schedule with his throwing program early in camp due to elbow soreness, but the injury won't prevent him from receiving his game reps at the plate. Wong's ability to hit through the injury is encouraging, though he shouldn't be considered fully healthy until cleared to work behind the plate.

  • Red Sox's Connor Wong: Dealing with sore elbow

Manager Alex Cora said Friday that Wong will be brought along slowly early in camp due to elbow soreness, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports.

Wong's availability for the start of the regular season isn't likely to be affected by the injury, but he'll be eased into spring training. The 27-year-old had a .673 OPS in 126 contests last season and is expected to open 2024 as Boston's primary backstop.

  • Red Sox's Connor Wong: Top catcher heading into spring

Wong is expected to be Boston's primary catcher to start the 2024 season, Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe reports.

Wong appears set to lead what might be considered an assemblage of backup catchers, ahead of Reese McGuire, Tyler Heineman and Roberto Perez. Wong and McGuire handled catching chores in 2023 with the former taking over as the primary backstop when the latter went down with an oblique injury last summer. Over 121 games (105 as a starting catcher), Wong slashed .235/.288/.385 and was strikeout prone (33.3 K%). Much of his real-world value lay in his work gunning down base stealers. Per Baseball Savant, the 27-year-old ranked in the 92nd percentile in caught-stealing above average. It's been a quiet offseason for the Red Sox, who appear to be biding time behind the dish until 2023 first-round draft pick Kyle Teel -- he reached Double-A Portland last year -- is ready for the show.
