  • Athletics' Esteury Ruiz: Back in starting nine Monday

Ruiz (wrist) will start in left field and bat leadoff in Monday's game against the Rangers.

After he was pulled from Saturday's 20-4 win over the Marlins with a wrist injury, Ruiz was sent in for an MRI, but the imaging evidently revealed nothing concerning. The speedy outfielder will slot back in atop the lineup with Oakland facing a left-hander (Andrew Heaney) on Monday, but Ruiz still looks as though he'll be limited to a short-side platoon role that will limit his opportunities to play against right-handed pitching.

  • Athletics' Esteury Ruiz: MRI coming Monday

Ruiz, who was removed from Saturday's win over the Marlins with a wrist injury and was out of the lineup Sunday, is slated to undergo an MRI on Monday, Jessica Kleinschmidt of the Athletics' official site reports.

Manager Mark Kotsay hadn't ruled out Ruiz making an in-game appearance Sunday, but that situation never arose in an ugly 12-3 loss for the Athletics. Ruiz is now headed for further evaluation Monday, after which the severity of injury he suffered making a diving catch in Saturday's game will become clearer.

  • Athletics' Esteury Ruiz: Removed with wrist injury Saturday

Ruiz suffered a wrist injury on a diving catch in the sixth inning of Saturday's win over the Marlins and was removed from the game, MLB.com reports.

Ruiz appeared to hurt his glove hand and remained down for a brief time following the catch, cradling his left wrist as he exited the field with team trainers. Seth Brown replaced him in left field, and Ruiz could well be headed for a day off in Sunday's series finale, at minimum.

  • Athletics' Esteury Ruiz: Makes impact as pinch runner

Ruiz entered Wednesday's win over the Pirates as a pinch runner in the bottom of the eighth inning, recording a stolen base and subsequently scoring a run.

The speedy outfielder offered a spark off the bench after being tasked with running for Abraham Toro, swiping second base and subsequently coming home on Kyle McCann's single. The steal was only Ruiz's fourth in 16 games this season, but his second in the last three contests. The 25-year-old has also shown a welcome increase in pop early in the campaign, as he sports an impressive .861 OPS thanks in large part to having laced five of his nine hits for extra bases.

  • Athletics' Esteury Ruiz: Productive out of leadoff spot

Ruiz went 1-for-4 with a double, a stolen base and a run in a win over the Pirates on Monday.

Five of Ruiz's nine hits on the season have now gone for extra bases, leading to his considerably surprising .528 slugging percentage across 42 plate appearances. The speedy outfielder has seen an increase in strikeout rate to 23.8 percent and is sporting a bloated 34.8 percent chase rate as well, but the Athletics might be willing to live with some of that if Ruiz can continue to demonstrate improved pop after posting a middling .654 OPS across 132 games in 2023.

  • Athletics' Esteury Ruiz: Back on bench Sunday

Ruiz is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Orioles.

Ruiz had started in each of the Athletics' last three games and five of the previous six contests, but he'll head to the bench Sunday. With Brent Rooker recently returning from the injured list and with Seth Brown, JJ Bleday and Lawrence Butler seemingly representing greater priorities in the outfield, Ruiz may be the odd man out for a regular spot in the lineup versus right-handed pitching.

  • Athletics' Esteury Ruiz: Out again against righty

Ruiz is not in the lineup for Friday's contest in Cleveland.

In four games since being recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas, Ruiz has started once against a left-hander but has been on the bench all three times the Athletics have faced a righty. Ruiz's speed upside warrants him being held in deeper leagues in case he starts playing more, but Oakland doesn't seem to view him as an everyday player.

  • Athletics' Esteury Ruiz: Second homer in three games

Ruiz went 1-for-5 with a two-run home run, a stolen base and an additional run in a win over the Cardinals on Wednesday.

Ruiz led off and went deep for the second time in three games, slugging a 412-foot shot to left center with Max Schuemann aboard in the third inning to open the scoring. The hot-hitting outfielder's recent power display is especially noteworthy, considering he belted only five homers across 490 plate appearances in 2023, and because he's been focused on improving his hard contact since spring training.
