  • Angels' Jose Quijada: Slated for bullpen session

Quijada (elbow) is expected to throw a bullpen session Tuesday, per MLB.com.

The bullpen session will be a significant step for Quijada as he continues to work toward a return from the Tommy John surgery he underwent last May. The lefty hurler has been rehabbing at the Angels' training facility in Arizona and is on track to return to the big-league club's bullpen around midseason.

  • Angels' Jose Quijada: Continues progress toward return

Quijada (elbow) is in Arizona to continue his throwing progression and could return by midseason, per MLB.com.

Quijada underwent Tommy John surgery last May, so he's now over 10 months into his recovery. The lefty hurler has been throwing from 60 feet as he takes incremental steps toward a return. If all goes well for Quijada, he could rejoin the Angels' bullpen around the beginning of July.

Quijada (elbow) plans to play catch from 120 feet Monday, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports.

  • Angels' Jose Quijada: Shifts to 60-day IL

Quijada (elbow) was placed on the 60-day injured list Sunday.

The left-hander underwent Tommy John surgery last May and is poised to be sidelined for the first half of 2024, so his move to the 60-day IL is hardly a surprise. Quijada had a 3.98 ERA with three saves and 12 holds for the Angels in 2022 and could see some high-leverage chances once healthy.

  • Angels' Jose Quijada: Undergoes surgery

Quijada (elbow) underwent Tommy John surgery on his left elbow May 17, per MLB.com.

An MRI and multiple doctors' opinions in early May determined that Quijada needed the season-ending procedure. The lefty reliever is slated to miss about 12 months, so he could return around the middle of 2024. Quijada recorded four saves and five holds while posting a 6.00 ERA and 1.22 WHIP over 10 appearances prior to going down with the injury.

  • Angels' Jose Quijada: Transferred to 60-day IL

Quijada (elbow) was transferred from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day injured list by the Angels on Monday.

It's a procedural move that clears room on the 40-man roster, and the Angels needed it to selected the contract of Cesar Valdez on Monday. Quijada will miss the rest of the 2023 season after it was revealed that the left-hander will need to undergo Tommy John surgery on his left elbow.

  • Angels' Jose Quijada: Ligament damage found in MRI

Angels manager Phil Nevin said Tuesday that an MRI on Quijada's left elbow reviewed some ligament damage, but the southpaw will receive a second opinion before it will be determined whether he'll need to have surgery, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Registerreports.

Nevin called the first opinion that Quijada received "discouraging," based on the report provided by doctors. Quijada will get the second opinion before an announcement is made regarding the severity of the injury and whether it will require surgery. Even if a procedure isn't deemed necessary, the 27-year-old appears likely to be sidelined beyond the minimum 15 days.
