Two years removed from Tommy John elbow surgery, Levi Stoudt was one of a handful of organizational starters to reach MLB during the 2023 season out of necessity. While at Triple-A Louisville, the right-hander's ability to find the strike zone regressed and keeping the ball in the park was an issue (2.2 HR/9). The control followed him to the majors in four appearances prior to the All-Star break, and Stoudt was passed over during the second half when Cincinnati needed reinforcements from the minors. The Reds took action to address the rotation during the offseason and have an array of depth arms, and Stoudt is not expected to compete for a spot on the MLB roster during spring training. Of note, he was transitioned to bullpen work for Louisville in September and ended the year with a scoreless 8.1 innings, which suggests a role change for the 26-year-old in 2024.

  • Mariners' Levi Stoudt: Making solid case early

    Stoudt, who was claimed off waivers by the Mariners from the Reds in mid-February, is making a case to enter the rotation mix at some point this coming season, Steve Stockmar of MLB.com reports. Stoudt is in his second stint with the Mariners organization, having originally entered professional baseball as Seattle's third-round pick in the First-Year Player Draft back in 2019. He was eventually dealt to the Reds in 2022 and got his first taste of the big leagues with Cincinnati last season, pitching to a 0-1 record, 9.58 ERA and 2.32 WHIP across the 10.1 innings covering his four appearances (two starts). However, Stoudt was impressive in his Cactus League debut Tuesday, allowing a hit and recording two strikeouts over two scoreless innings versus the Guardians while hitting 97 mph with his fastball and also deploying his slider and splitter effectively. Manager Scott Servais is optimistic about Stoudt's chances of eventually contributing as a starter in 2024, noting the need to have more than just five rotation members over the course of a season and adding "I do think he helps us at some point this year."

Stoudt had been part of the trade package that sent Luis Castillo from Cincinnati to Seattle in 2022, and Stoudt will now reunite with the organization that drafted him. The 26-year-old righty struggled to find his footing in 2023, allowing 11 earned runs in 10.1 major-league innings while also putting up a 6.23 ERA across 82.1 frames in Triple-A. He'll presumably start the season with Triple-A Tacoma and would need to show significant progress from last year before getting another run in the big leagues. According to Day, Stoudt was scratched Friday after it became apparent that Reds starter Nick Lodolo wouldn't be ready to take the hill Saturday for his turn through the rotation while he continues to deal with lingering calf/ankle soreness. Due to Stoudt's late scratch Friday along with the fact that Saturday's game in Miami begins at 1:10 p.m. ET, it's not immediately clear if he'll be able to secure travel arrangements and arrive at LoanDepot Park with enough time to complete a warmup.
