Player Outlook
Two years removed from Tommy John elbow surgery, Levi Stoudt was one of a handful of organizational starters to reach MLB during the 2023 season out of necessity. While at Triple-A Louisville, the right-hander's ability to find the strike zone regressed and keeping the ball in the park was an issue (2.2 HR/9). The control followed him to the majors in four appearances prior to the All-Star break, and Stoudt was passed over during the second half when Cincinnati needed reinforcements from the minors. The Reds took action to address the rotation during the offseason and have an array of depth arms, and Stoudt is not expected to compete for a spot on the MLB roster during spring training. Of note, he was transitioned to bullpen work for Louisville in September and ended the year with a scoreless 8.1 innings, which suggests a role change for the 26-year-old in 2024.

  • Mariners' Levi Stoudt: Demoted to Triple-A

Stoudt was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma following Monday's exhibition against the Padres, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. Stoudt's time in big-league camp will end on a sour note, as he surrendered two runs on three hits over one inning during Monday's 13-3 loss. He'll head to the minors following Monday's transaction, but the 26-year-old could eventually contribute for the Mariners later on in 2024.

  • Mariners' Levi Stoudt: Making solid case early

Stoudt, who was claimed off waivers by the Mariners from the Reds in mid-February, is making a case to enter the rotation mix at some point this coming season, Steve Stockmar of MLB.com reports. Stoudt is in his second stint with the Mariners organization, having originally entered professional baseball as Seattle's third-round pick in the First-Year Player Draft back in 2019. He was eventually dealt to the Reds in 2022 and got his first taste of the big leagues with Cincinnati last season, pitching to a 0-1 record, 9.58 ERA and 2.32 WHIP across the 10.1 innings covering his four appearances (two starts). However, Stoudt was impressive in his Cactus League debut Tuesday, allowing a hit and recording two strikeouts over two scoreless innings versus the Guardians while hitting 97 mph with his fastball and also deploying his slider and splitter effectively. Manager Scott Servais is optimistic about Stoudt's chances of eventually contributing as a starter in 2024, noting the need to have more than just five rotation members over the course of a season and adding "I do think he helps us at some point this year."

  • Mariners' Levi Stoudt: Claimed by M's

The Mariners claimed Stoudt off waivers from Cincinnati on Saturday, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. Stoudt had been part of the trade package that sent Luis Castillo from Cincinnati to Seattle in 2022, and Stoudt will now reunite with the organization that drafted him. The 26-year-old righty struggled to find his footing in 2023, allowing 11 earned runs in 10.1 major-league innings while also putting up a 6.23 ERA across 82.1 frames in Triple-A. He'll presumably start the season with Triple-A Tacoma and would need to show significant progress from last year before getting another run in the big leagues. Canaan Smith-Njigba was designated for assignment in a corresponding move.

  • Reds' Levi Stoudt: Exits 40-man roster

Stoudt was designated for assignment by the Reds on Tuesday, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports. Stoudt really struggled in 2023, posting a 6.23 ERA at Triple-A Louisville and a 9.58 ERA during his brief time with the Reds. The 26-year-old has been a prospect of some significance in the past, so perhaps he'll draw some interest on waivers.

  • Reds' Levi Stoudt: Recalled from Louisville

Cincinnati recalled Stoudt from Triple-A Louisville on Wednesday. Stoudt has been lit up for 11 earned runs in 10 innings of work this season at the major-league level, but he'll get another look in a long-relief role. Daniel Duarte was optioned out in a corresponding move.

  • Reds' Levi Stoudt: Optioned to Triple-A

Cincinnati optioned Stoudt to Triple-A Louisville on Monday, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. Stoudt allowed three earned runs on four hits and three walks over just three innings in a spot start Sunday versus Atlanta. The 25-year-old right-hander now carries a 9.90 ERA in 10 major-league innings (two starts, one relief appearance) for the season.

  • Reds' Levi Stoudt: Struggles in short start

Stoudt allowed three runs on four hits and three walks while striking out two over three innings in a no-decision versus Atlanta on Sunday. Stoudt wasn't built up to a starter's workload, but it was a rough third inning that ended his spot start. He's struggled to a 9.90 ERA, 2.20 WHIP and 8:7 K:BB through 10 big-league innings across three appearances (two starts) this season. Ben Lively (pectoral) is on the injured list, but it's unclear if Stoudt will continue to fill the vacancy in the Reds' rotation or if another pitcher will get a chance. If he gets another start, it's likely to be at home versus the Padres.

  • Reds' Levi Stoudt: Called up for Sunday's start

Stoudt was recalled from Triple-A Louisville ahead of his start against Atlanta on Sunday. The 25-year-old has given up eight earned runs across seven frames in his two starts for the Reds this year, but he'll receive another chance Sunday after Ben Lively (pectoral) landed on the injured list. Stoudt covered just 1.2 innings during his last start for Louisville and isn't fully built up after dealing with a rib injury, per Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer, so Cincinnati also promoted reliever Randy Wynne for bullpen depth.

  • Reds' Levi Stoudt: Recalled, available in relief

The Reds recalled Stoudt from Triple-A Louisville ahead of Saturday's game against the Marlins, and he'll be available out of the bullpen for the contest. With Nick Lodolo (calf) scratched from his start and Stoudt scratched from his own outing in the minors, the latter appeared headed for a spot start with the big club Saturday. Instead,Derek Law will begin the game on the mound for Cincinnati, but there's a good chance Stoudt will handle the bulk of the innings after him.

  • Reds' Levi Stoudt: Not starting Saturday

Stoudt won't start Saturday's game against the Marlins, as Derek Law will get the nod as an opener instead, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports. Nick Lodolo was scratched from his scheduled start with a sore left calf, and Stoudt was scratched from his own Triple-A start Friday, so it looked as though Stoudt was about to get the nod for the big-league club. He could still serve as a bulk reliever behind Law, but he hasn't been officially added to the Reds' roster, so it's not yet clear whether that's on the table.

  • Reds' Levi Stoudt: Could make spot start Saturday

Stoudt was scratched from his scheduled start Friday at Triple-A Louisville and could be recalled to make a spot start for the Reds on Saturday in Miami, Jim Day of Bally Sports Cincinnati reports. According to Day, Stoudt was scratched Friday after it became apparent that Reds starter Nick Lodolo wouldn't be ready to take the hill Saturday for his turn through the rotation while he continues to deal with lingering calf/ankle soreness. Due to Stoudt's late scratch Friday along with the fact that Saturday's game in Miami begins at 1:10 p.m. ET, it's not immediately clear if he'll be able to secure travel arrangements and arrive at LoanDepot Park with enough time to complete a warmup. If Stoudt isn't formally activated for the start, the Reds could choose to treat Saturday's game as a bullpen day. Stoudt previously made his big-league debut back on April 19 versus the Rays, working four innings while allowing seven earned runs on nine hits and a walk.

  • Reds' Levi Stoudt: Moves to Triple-A

Stoudt was optioned to Triple-A Louisville on Thursday. Stoudt got knocked around in a spot start Wednesday versus the Rays, yielding seven earned runs on nine hits and one walk over four innings. Luke Weaver (forearm) has been activated off the 15-day injured list in a corresponding move and will jump into Cincinnati rotation Thursday against the Pirates.

  • Reds' Levi Stoudt: Promotion official ahead of start

The Reds recalled Stoudt from their taxi squad ahead of his scheduled start Wednesday versus the Rays in Cincinnati. Reliever Casey Legumina was optioned to Triple-A to clear a spot on the 26-man active roster for the 25-year-old Stoudt, who will be making his big-league debut. Stoudt owns a 4.09 ERA, 1.55 WHIP and 10:9 K:BB over 11 innings across his three starts with Louisville this season and isn't a highly regarded prospect, so he'll be tough to depend on as a streaming option while he pitches in a hitter-friendly park versus the 15-3 Rays. Though Stoudt is expected to be in line for just one start, an unexpectedly strong showing versus the Rays could allow him to stick in the rotation over Luis Cessa, who was walloped for 11 earned runs in his most recent start and could be at risk of a demotion to the bullpen.

  • Reds' Levi Stoudt: Shipped to Cincy

Stoudt was traded from the Mariners to the Reds along with Noelvi Marte, Edwin Arroyo and Andrew Moore in exchange for Luis Castillo on Friday, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. Stoudt was seen as one of the Mariners' top 10 or 15 prospects coming into the year, but he has struggled quite a bit at Double-A, logging a 5.28 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 82 strikeouts in 87 innings. The 24-year-old righty could develop into a back-end starter or a swingman.

  • Mariners' Levi Stoudt: Reassigned to minor-league camp

Stoudt was reassigned to minor-league spring training Friday. Stoudt was in the mix for the fifth spot in the Mariners' starting rotation during camp, but he failed to land a big-league roster spot after he gave up three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out one in 2.1 innings during his lone Cactus League appearance. The 24-year-old made three starts at Double-A Arkansas last year, and it wouldn't be surprising to see him advance at some point in 2022.

  • Mariners' Levi Stoudt: In mix for No. 5 starter job

Stoudt is a candidate for the Mariners' currently vacant No. 5 spot in the rotation, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports. Stoudt's main competition appears to be Matt Brash and George Kirby, two fellow prospects with no shortage of talent or pedigree. Stoudt built up more extensively than Kirby last season in the minors, but his 81.2 innings during 2021 check in just behind Brash's 97.1. Stoudt, who has just one season of professional experience under his belt, held his own during his first Cactus League start against the Dodgers on Saturday, throwing 55 pitches over 2.1 innings while facing regulars Trea Turner, Cody Bellinger and Chris Taylor.
