  • Jae-Gyun Hwang: Back in KBO

Hwang agreed to a four-year, $7.85 million deal with the KT Wiz of the KBO, Sung Min Kim of the Sporting News reports.

He signed a minor-league deal with the Giants last season and was a flop, hitting .154 in a brief big-league stint while being a below league (98 wRC+) average hitter in the Pacific Coast League. It is no surprise that Hwang chose to return to a league where he has had past success. The length of the deal makes it unlikely that he will ever return to MLB, as he will be 34 when the deal is over, presumably past his prime.

  • Jae-Gyun Hwang: Seeking return to Korea

Hwang is looking to sign a deal to return to the KBO for the 2018 season, NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

In limited opportunities with the Giants, Hwang hit .154/.228/.231 over 18 games after posting a .285/.332/.453 line with 10 homers and seven steals in 98 games at Triple-A Sacramento. His inability to gain traction on a club that needed infield help in 2017 likely foreshadowed another year on the periphery of a 25-man roster if he stayed in North America.

  • Giants' Jae-Gyun Hwang: Designated for assignment

The Giants designated Hwang for assignment Friday, Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Now that he's been removed from the 40-man roster, Hwang will not be joining the Giants' callups as rosters expand. The Triple-A season ends in the next few days, with Hwang holding a .287/.334/.458 line, 10 home runs and seven stolen bases through 380 plate appearances. His major-league future with the Giants remains in doubt.

  • Giants' Jae-Gyun Hwang: Sent to minors

Hwang was demoted to the minors following Wednesday's loss to the Athletics, Andrew Baggarly of The Mercury News reports.

The international star was clearly outmatched in the majors, batting just .154 with 15 strikeouts in 57 plate appearances. Hwang will report back to Triple-A Sacramento, where he slashed .290/.334/.473 this season, but a return prior to rosters expanding in September is unlikely. Ryder Jones was called up in a corresponding move -- Conor Gillaspie was designated for assignment -- to take over third base duties for the Giants.

  • Giants' Jae-Gyun Hwang: Celebrates birthday with RBI

Hwang went 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run in a 6-4 loss to the Dodgers on Friday.

The former KBO star got to spend his 30th birthday in the starting lineup, delivering an RBI single off Alex Wood in the seventh inning. Hwang has struggled in the majors this season (.175/.233/.275), but the Giants could give him an extended look down the stretch over more proven options to see what they have in the international slugger. For now, he appears to be in a platoon at third base with Conor Gillaspie.

  • Giants' Jae-Gyun Hwang: Back in big leagues

Hwang was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento on Friday, Andrew Baggarly of The San Jose Mercury News reports.

Hwang was sent back to the minors just six days ago, but with Eduardo Nunez heading to Boston via trade, the Giants needed more infield depth. The former KBO star will likely move into a bench role given his .509 OPS in 36 at-bats earlier this year.

  • Giants' Jae-Gyun Hwang: Optioned to minors

Hwang was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento on Saturday, John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Hwang has struggled since being promoted to the big leagues, playing himself into a reserve role by hitting just .194 over his first 10 games and failing to really improve beyond that. He'll have a chance to see more everyday opportunities with Sacramento and could possibly see a late-season call-up. Orlando Calixte takes his spot on the roster in a corresponding move.

  • Giants' Jae-Gyun Hwang: Returns to bench role

Hwang is out of the lineup Sunday against the Padres, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

Hwang will remain on the bench for the third game in a row, signaling that the return of Eduardo Nunez (hamstring) from the disabled list has closed the Korean's window for playing time. The 29-year-old has recorded six hits in 31 at-bats (.194 average) since his June 28 promotion.

  • Giants' Jae-Gyun Hwang: Fails to capitalize on opportunity

Hwang went 0-for-3 before being lifted from Sunday's loss to the Marlins in favor of Conor Gillaspie.

Hwang has received a steady dose of playing time since being called up June 28, but outside of a home run in his debut, the Korean import has struggled at the plate (6-for-31) in 10 games. He could see a steep reduction in playing time following the All-Star break when Eduardo Nunez (hamstring) returns from the disabled list, which would effectively end any marginal fantasy value he carried over the past couple of weeks. Hwang could resurface in the second half if the Giants and their 34-56 record decide to sell off veteran pieces at the trade deadline.

  • Giants' Jae-Gyun Hwang: Another start Tuesday

Hwang will make his fourth start in five games Tuesday against the Tigers, Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Hwang has been the beneficiary of a plethora of injuries in the San Francisco infield. Ryder Jones originally took over at third base when Eduardo Nunez went down with a hamstring injury, but Jones has been limited since getting hit in the hand with a pitch Saturday. Hwang has been productive at the plate in his brief opportunity, going 4-for-12 with a double, a home run and two RBI.

  • Giants' Jae-Gyun Hwang: Collects two hits in start Sunday

Hwang started at third and batted seventh Sunday, going 2-for-4 in a win over the Pirates.

The Korean import had been splitting time with Ryder Jones (hand) at third, but an injury to the latter opened the door for Hwang to get the start. He gains short-term, deep-league value until either Jones or Eduardo Nunez -- who is nearing a rehab assignment for his ailing hamstring -- return.

  • Giants' Jae-Gyun Hwang: Moves back to bench Saturday

Hwang is out of Saturday's lineup against the Pirates, Henry Schulman of The San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Hwang began his major-league career with a bang Tuesday (1-for-4 with a home run), but he followed that with an 0-for-3 day at the plate and will concede Saturday's start at third base to Ryder Jones. Both players are expected to split time at the hot corner until Eduardo Nunez (hamstring) returns from the disabled list.

  • Giants' Jae-Gyun Hwang: Homers, drives in two in ML debut

Hwang went 1-for-4 with a home run and two RBI in Wednesday's 5-3 win over the Rockies.

Hwang was called up from Triple-A Sacramento just before Wednesday's game, and came through his first big league long ball, taking Kyle Freeland deep in the sixth inning. He collected his first RBI earlier with a groundout in the fourth inning. The 29-year-old Hwang batted .287 with seven home runs in 254 at-bats in the minors, and he'll have a chance to see some regular playing time with the Giants.

  • Giants' Jae-Gyun Hwang: Joins Giants, starts Wednesday

Hwang is starting Wednesday's game at third base during his major-league debut, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

Hwang's contract was selected by the team prior to its game against the Rockies on Wednesday. The 29-year-old is slotted into the fifth spot in the order for the series finale, while getting a chance to shine following three successful years in the Korean Baseball Organization. During his time with Triple-A Sacramento this season, Hwang slashed .287/.333/.476 with seven home runs and 44 RBI. With the Giants searching for answers, Hwang has an opportunity to prove his worth in the big leagues starting Wednesday against left-hander Kyle Freeland after the 14-inning affair between the two clubs Tuesday.

  • Giants' Jae-Gyun Hwang: Expects to join big club Wednesday

Hwang is expected to have his contract purchased by the Giants on Wednesday, John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Hwang, who was brought over from the Korea Baseball Organization in January, has been performing admirably with Triple-A Sacramento this season, slashing .287/.333/.476 with seven home runs and 44 RBI over 68 games. He'll have a chance to contribute immediately with fellow third basemen Eduardo Nunez (hamstring) and Conor Gillaspie (back) sidelined due to injuries.

  • Giants' Jae-Gyun Hwang: Plans to opt out of contract

Hwang will opt out of his contract if he is not on the Giants' roster by July 1, Andrew Baggarly of The San Jose Mercury News reports.

The former Korean Baseball Organization All-Star is slashing .287/.331/.466 with six home runs in 275 plate appearances at Triple-A Sacramento this season, but there hasn't been a path onto the big-league roster as a corner infielder. Hwang has two starts in left field this season, which is a much clearer avenue to playing time in San Francisco.

  • Giants' Jae-Gyun Hwang: Hitting well at Triple-A

Hwang is batting .294 with six home runs and four stolen bases in 227 plate appearances with Triple-A Sacramento.

After a slow start to the season, the Korean Baseball Organization All-Star has picked things up at the plate. Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports is reporting that the Giants are considering a potential call-up for the rookie prior to his July 1 opt-out deadline. Hwang has been playing primarily at first and third base with the River Cats -- both of which are blocked at the major-league level -- but he has started two games in left field, which could provide a clear path to playing time should the club opt to bring him up. It may be time for deep and NL-only owners to start taking a look at the 29-year-old as his power/speed combo could translate well for fantasy purposes.
